Prognostic value of brainstem auditory evoked potentials in neonates.

The clinical outcome in 74 children at risk for audiologic or neurologic sequelae of a variety of perinatal insults was correlated with brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) in the newborn period. No constant relationship was found between BAEP findings and later hearing status in preterm infants or in infants with severe brain damage. However, persistent patterns of wave I abnormality correctly predicted the presence and type of hearing loss in other infants. Central BAEP abnormalities recorded in preterm infants or in infants who had just suffered anoxia had little predictive value. T

[Diagnostic value of brainstem auditory evoked potentials (author's transl)].

The present work is an evaluation of brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) as a tool for neurological diagnosis. Filtered alternate clicks with monaural stimulation and ipsilateral recording between the vertex and the ipsilateral mastoid have been used. Normative data of the laboratory established in 50 normal subjects, mean age 35 years, and criteria for interpretation are given. 155 patients had or were suspected of having multiple sclerosis. In definite multiple sclerosis (33 patients), BAEP were abnormal in 67 p. 100 of the cases, among them the 4 patients with an internuclear ophtal

Changes in late-latency auditory evoked potentials after tinnitus suppression using auditory stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: Tinnitus can result from auditory system reorganization due to neural activity dysfunctions. Auditory stimulation can cause temporary or persistent tinnitus alleviation by altering the neural generators. The present study investigated the changes in Late-Latency Auditory Evoked Potentials (LLAEPs) after tinnitus suppression using auditory stimulation with short-term Residual Inhibition (RI) and long-term Tinnitus Masker (TM). METHODS: The study included 40 participates with equal numbers in the Tinnitus Group (TG), including the chronic tinnitus subjects, and the Control Group (CG)

Auditory evoked potential and psychiatry.

An adolescent was implied in a car accident in which he suffered a head trauma without any substantial loss of consciousness. The posttraumatic syndrome was characterized by headaches and mental symptoms: nervousness, feelings of depersonalization, impaired memory, difficulty in concentration. Neurological examination and laboratory tests have always been normal but for a large perduring asymmetry at the Cortical Auditory Evoked Response. This finding is commented in the light of a review of the literature and of some neuropsychological findings.

Simultaneously-evoked auditory potentials (SEAP): A new method for concurrent measurement of cortical and subcortical auditory-evoked activity.

Recent electrophysiological work has evinced a capacity for plasticity in subcortical auditory nuclei in human listeners. Similar plastic effects have been measured in cortically-generated auditory potentials but it is unclear how the two interact. Here we present Simultaneously-Evoked Auditory Potentials (SEAP), a method designed to concurrently elicit electrophysiological brain potentials from inferior colliculus, thalamus, and primary and secondary auditory cortices. Twenty-six normal-hearing adult subjects (mean 19.26 years, 9 male) were exposed to 2400 monaural (right-ear) presentations o

Audiogram Estimation Performance Using Auditory Evoked Potentials and Gaussian Processes.

OBJECTIVES: Auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) play an important role in evaluating hearing in infants and others who are unable to participate reliably in behavioral testing. Discriminating the AEP from the much larger background activity, however, can be challenging and time-consuming, especially when several AEP measurements are needed, as is the case for audiogram estimation. This task is usually entrusted to clinicians, who visually inspect the AEP waveforms to determine if a response is present or absent. The drawback is that this introduces a subjective element to the test, compromising

Brain stem auditory evoked potentials from bone stimulation in dogs.

Brain stem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) testing with air-conducted click stimuli can be used to diagnose sensorineural deafness in dogs if conductive deafness can be ruled out. Detection of conductive deafness can be performed by recording BAEP elicited by a vibratory stimulus transducer placed against the skull. Air- and bone-conducted BAEP were compared in dogs, varying bone stimulator placement, click polarity, and stimulus intensity. Optimal bone stimulator placement was determined to be over the mastoid process, followed by the mandible and the zygomatic arch. Condensation polarity cl

Swallowing, speech, and brainstem auditory-evoked potentials in spasmodic torticollis.

To explore the controversial "brainstem theory" of spasmodic torticollis, eight consecutively referred patients were examined. Three independent examinations were conducted on the same day: a videofluoroscopic barium swallowing examination, an instrumental speech examination, and a brainstem auditory-evoked potential (BAEP) analysis. Swallowing was normal in two patients; speech physiology, in five; and BAEPs, in all. Normal BAEPs refute the brainstem theory, while abnormalities of speech and swallowing temper this conclusion. Several alternative explanations are proposed.

[Relations between pure-tone audiometry and cortical evoked auditory potentials].

Slow vertex response (SVR) audiometry is presently one of the methods of choice in objective auditory threshold assessment. The aim of this study was to evaluate, as objectively possible, the relationship existing between the thresholds of SVR and or pure tone audiometry (PTA). The study was carried out on twenty subjects with hearing losses of various degrees and types. While mean differences between SVR and PTA thresholds ranged between 6 to 13 dB, in some cases values over 30 dB were found. No statistically significant intra- and interindividual discrepancies were found, even though in some

Prediction of binaural click lateralization by brainstem auditory evoked potentials.

A previous study by Furst et al. (1985) has shown that in healthy subjects brainstem responses evoked by binaural auditory stimuli with interaural time difference (ITD) and interaural level difference (ILD) include information about the integration of data received by both ears. A correlation was found between the first major peak of the binaural difference waveform and perception of click lateralization and fusion. We have now tested whether a similar correlation exists in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). The ability to lateralize dichotic clicks was tested in MS patients with normal au

Brainstem auditory and somatosensory evoked potentials in neuro-Behçet's syndrome.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and somatosensory evoked potentials after median nerve stimulation (MN-SEPs) and after posterior tibial nerve stimulation (PTN-SEPs) were studied in 17 patients with neuro-Behçet's syndrome (NB). Eleven patients (64.7%) showed an absence of wave I, III or V or a prolongation of the interpeak latency I-III, or III-V in BAEPs. Six patients (37.4%) showed a prolongation in the latency of cortical P37 of PTN-SEPs and/or the interpeak latency EP-N13 or N13-N18 of MN-SEPs. The BAEP and SEP abnormalities indicated a conduction failure of the acoustic later

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials in toxic, metabolic and anoxic coma.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of brainstem auditory evoked responses as a prognostic tool in conditions of coma which interfere with cerebral metabolism. Thirteen patients in coma resulting from different systemic disorders (barbiturate intoxication, cardiac arrest, chronic hepatic insufficiency) were included in the study. Brainstem auditory evoked potentials were recorded and patients were graded according to the results. When used in conjunction with other clinical parameters (Glasgow Coma Scale), brainstem auditory evoked potentials provided a more reliable prognostic

Brain-stem auditory-evoked potentials during lidocaine infusion in humans.

Auditory brain-stem responses (ABR) were recorded in six healthy male volunteers during intravenous infusion of lidocaine that achieved systemic blood levels similar to those seen with conduction anesthesia and antiarrhythmic therapy. Following an initial loading dose of lidocaine (1 mg/kg), subjects noted prominent tinnitus, perioral numbness, and drowsiness. All of these symptoms except drowsiness abated during continued infusion as blood concentrations reached equilibrium. All subjects noted that the click stimuli used to elicit ABR varied markedly in intensity and character throughout the

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials in 20 patients with palatal myoclonus.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were obtained in 20 patients with palatal myoclonus. The group included 14 men and six women whose ages ranged from 19 to 82 years. Six of the patients had abnormal BAEPs: two with severe head trauma and one each with a brainstem infarct, tumor, demyelination, and an indeterminate inflammatory process. The 14 patients with normal BAEPs had palatal myoclonus secondary to head trauma (five patients), brainstem infarcts (four patients), cerebellar tumors (two patients), degenerative processes (two patients), and an Arnold-Chiari malformation (one patie
