[Enteroviral persistence in eye infections in monkeys (postuveitis syndrome)].

Follow-up (5.5 years) of monkeys with a history of acute enterovirus uveitis (AEU) after intraocular infection with ophthalmotropic ECHO 11 and ECHO 19 strains showed progressive changes in the infected eye; destruction of the iris, formation of films in the anterior chamber of the eye, deformation of the pupil, and signs of cataract and glaucoma. A short (1-30 days) stage of active reproduction of infective virus (up to 10(10) TCD50/g tissue in the first days postinfection) was followed by the second very long stage of limited specific multiplication of virus in ocular tissues. The virus was

Adenovirus eye infections in an Australian city, 1972-9.

A number of adenovirus serotypes have been associated with both sporadic cases and outbreaks of conjunctivitis and pharyngoconjunctival fever but only adenovirus type 8 and adenovirus type 19 have been responsible for wide-spread epidemic kerato-conjunctivitis. In Melbourne, Australia, in the past eight years these two serotypes have been prevalent, resulting in an outbreak of adenovirus type 8 kerato-conjunctivitis in 1976-7 followed by adenovirus type 19 kerato-conjunctivitis in 1978-9. During these two periods of peak incidence, 53 cases of adenovirus type 8 and 43 cases of adenovirus type

Innovative Famciclovir Eye Drop Formulations for Herpes Zoster Infections.

PURPOSE: Herpes zoster ophthalmicus, a manifestation of the varicella-zoster virus in the eye, presents significant clinical challenges. As there is no direct ocular treatment for this infection, new therapeutic options should be studied. Famciclovir, a widely used antiviral drug for herpes zoster, offers higher bioavailability than acyclovir (a common herpes zoster treatment). However, this drug is currently limited to oral dosage forms, which are associated with inherent limitations such as variable absorption or gastrointestinal side effects. This study aimed to formulate new famciclovir ey

Herpes simplex eye infections: clinical manifestations, pathogenesis and management.

Herpes infection of the eye may be acquired as the patient's first exposure to the virus (primary infection) or as involvement of a new anatomical site (the eye) in a patient with previous HSV infection. In either case, patients with herpetic eye infection risk recurrent eye disease throughout their lives. The infective lesions of the corneal epithelium (dendritic and geographic ulcers) occasionally develop into noninfective indolent or trophic ulcers, particularly under the influence of cauterizing chemicals or corticosteroids. Inflammation of the corneal stroma may accompany herpetic epithel

Fungal, Mycobacterial, and Nocardia infections and the eye: an update.

Although relatively uncommon, fungi, atypical Mycobacteria, and Nocardia have been isolated from a variety of infections of eye including keratitis, scleritis, canaliculitis, dacryocystitis, endophthalmitis and orbital cellulites. The organisms typically cause a slowly progressive disease. The diseases caused by the organisms can pose both diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. In this manuscript we will describe updates on important aspects of the ocular infections caused by these organisms.

Laboratory techniques for diagnosis of chlamydial infections of the eye.

Giemsa and fluorescence antibody (FA) staining were used to diagnose patients clinically suspected to be suffering from trachoma. A total of 52 controls i.e. individuals with refractive errors and no clinical trachoma and 173 cases suffering from different stages of trachoma were studied. FA was found to be 2.52 times more sensitive in confirming the presence of Chlamydia trachomatis compared to Giemsa staining. 28/52 (53.8%) and 4/52 (7.,69%) controls were also positive by FA and Giemsa staining, respectively, indicating sub-clinical infection without symptoms. Post treatment staining with bo

Use of quinolones for treatment of ear and eye infections.

Malignant otitis externa is a severe, necrotizing infection of the external auditory canal which is sometimes fatal. The traditional antimicrobial treatment has usually been the combination of an antipseudomonal beta-lactam and an aminoglycoside, given intravenously for 4 to 8 weeks. Over 100 patients have been treated with a fluoroquinolone alone, most commonly ciprofloxacin given by mouth in a dosage of 750 mg b.i.d. for 6 to 12 weeks. About 90% of patients have been cured. Treatment with a quinolone has the advantage over older treatments that it can be given orally and has a low rate of si

[Diagnosis and therapy of acute bacterial infections of the eye].

New knowledge in the understanding of infection immunology and the development of more effective antibiotics will influence the therapeutic options for extra- and intraocular bacterial diseases. The role of mucin with its high sIgA content, the glycoconjugate-mediated bacterial adherence phenomena of the cornea and conjunctiva, and the exact biomicroscopic classification can be constrated with the highly effective topically and systemically applicable antibiotics (e.g., Cephalosporins, Aminoglycosides, New Quinolones and Carbapenems). Recognition of the fact that the amplification mechanisms o

Acute bacterial infections of the eye: their aetiology and treatment.

The aerobic microbial flora of 823 eyes with acute bacterial conjunctivitis, corneal ulceration, dacryocystitis, discharging sockets, blepharitis, and postoperative infections has been investigated. Staphylococci, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and nonfermenting Gram-negative bacilli including Pseudomonas aeruginosa were the main pathogens. Fermenting coliforms were also infrequently isolated. The least overall resistance of 30.9% was to chloramphenicol, but no one antibiotic was effective against all pathogens. Cloxacillin is the best drug for staphylococcal and polymyxin B for pseudomonas infecti
