Eye pain is a common complaint among patients presenting to the neurology clinic. It can be related to neurologic diseases, but it can also be a localized eye condition. Such disorders can be misleading, as their benign appearance might mask more grave underlying conditions, potentially leading to misdiagnoses or delayed treatment. Most ocular diseases are associated with pain. While pain has been generally considered a mere (deleterious) additional symptom, it is now emerging that it is a key modulator of innate/adaptive immunity. We studied 39 blind painful eyes in 39 patients who were treated with retrobulbar injection of absolute (96%) alcohol for their severe ocular pain at the King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital from January 1984 to January 1987. There were 21 (54%) male and 18 (46%) female patients; all were followed for at least three months. PURPOSE: The aim was to develop a single-item, categorical ophthalmic pain severity scale.
METHODS: Focus groups were held with people who had experienced ophthalmic pain. Participants described their ophthalmic pain experiences with reference to level of severity, and commented on proposed pain scale designs. Thematic analysis of transcripts, and participants' category choices and scale preferences, were used to determine the number of response categories and labels chosen for the instrument. The final instrument was evaluated using a mail-out questionnaire.
