INTRODUCTION: The knowledge of malpractice claims after surgery for acute traumatic facial injuries can inform surgeons about potential litigation risks, case complications, and reasons for patient dissatisfaction.
METHODS: The Westlaw Campus Research and LexisNexis legal databases were searched for all available court decisions associated with cases brought to suit following surgery for traumatic facial injuries. The plaintiff characteristics, date, location, specialty of the defendant, allegations, and adjudicated case outcomes were obtained from case documents and analyzed.
RESULTS: There…

Study Design: Retrospective Study. Objective: To find out the incidence, type, and severity of injuries in other parts of the body in patients diagnosed with facial fractures. The study also analyzed any correlation between these injuries and facial fractures. Methods: A retrospective study of 991 patients with facial fractures during the period of 2006-2016. Results: 111 patients reported associated injuries (11.1%). The most common type of injury was limb injury (33.33%), followed by head injury (22.5%), clavicle fracture (14.7%), rib fracture (10.9%), cervical spine injury (5.4%), and other

In the area of craniomaxillofacial trauma, neurosensory disturbances are encountered commonly, especially with regard to the trigeminal and facial nerve systems. This article reviews the specific microanatomy of both cranial nerves V and VII, and evaluates contemporary neurosensory testing, current imaging modalities, and available nerve injury classification systems. In addition, the article proposes treatment paradigms for management of trigeminal and facial nerve injuries, specifically with regard to the craniomaxillofacial trauma setting.

Acute soft tissue trauma to the head and neck is a common reason for emergency department presentation and should be appropriately evaluated by a facial plastic surgeon. The evaluation of a patient who has suffered facial trauma should always include a comprehensive facial nerve exam and carry a low threshold of suspicion for parotid duct injury when involving the cheek. Injuries to the facial nerve and parotid duct can result in significant long-term functional, cosmetic, and emotional morbidity, particularly when diagnosis is delayed. In the repair of facial nerve transection, neurorrhaphy t

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of agmatine sulphate on facial nerve regeneration after facial nerve injury using electron and light microscopy.
METHODS: The study was performed on 30 male Wistar albino rats split into: a control group, a sham-treated group, a study control group, an anastomosis group, and an anastomosis plus agmatine sulphate treatment group. The mandibular branch of the facial nerve was dissected, and a piece was removed for histological and electron microscopic examination.
RESULTS: Regeneration was better in the anastomosis group than in the study control group. Howeve

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Recognition of the potentially severe sequelae arising from inadequate facial protection has facilitated sustained efforts to increase the use of protective visors in recent decades. Our objective was to characterize nationwide trends among patients presenting to emergency departments (ED) for facial injuries sustained while playing ice hockey.
METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System was searched for hockey-related facial injuries, with analysis for incidence; age and gender; and specific injury diagnoses, mechanisms, and facial locations.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the causes and incidence of facial injuries by an epidemiologic retrospective study.
METHODS: A total of 3 958 patients with facial injuries treated at Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, West China School of Stomatology, Sichuan University from 1955 to 2001 were investigated. Data regarding age, gender, cause of injury, pattern of fracture and associated systemic injuries were reviewed.
RESULTS: The male to female ratio of the patients with facial injury was 4.27:1 and 33.4% of patients were aged between 21 and 30 years. The most common cause of injury was …

This report describes our experiences and evolving philosophy with regard to managing segmental facial nerve injuries. We present the results of 13 facial nerve repairs of traumatic injury to a segment of the facial nerve. All peripheral facial nerve branches contribute essential elements to normal mimetic facial movement; therefore, we recommend early, appropriate repair of the nerve segment. This recommendation is based on principles established for managing disruptions of the main trunk of the facial nerve. It offers the patient the chance for complete recovery of facial function.

Mediastinal emphysema following facial trauma in the absence of neck, chest or abdominal injury is a rare entity. Mediastinal emphysema associated with fractures of the facial bones or odontological surgery has only been reviewed previously in case reports. This article reviews the etiological and pathogenetic mechanisms of subcutaneous facial/cervical emphysema and mediastinal emphysema associated with fractures of the facial bones. Complications and risk factors in treating fractures of the facial bones when mediastinal emphysema is present are discussed with emphasis on anaesthesiological c

Most facial injuries are not dire emergencies, except in the case of airway obstruction and in unrecognized, prolonged bleeding or oozing from facial wounds. Yet one must keep in mind the psychologic impact that facial injuries may have upon the patient and his family.

INTRODUCTION: Major trauma is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Facial injuries are often present in those sustaining major trauma. We sought to examine the Irish trauma registry to further assess this association.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the Irish trauma registry, the Major Trauma Audit, from 2017 to 2022 was performed. Patients over 16 years who had sustained major trauma were included in the analysis. The presence of an associated facial injury was further analysed.
RESULTS: A total of 8943 patients were included in the analysis. A facial inju…

The patient with facial paralysis presents a daunting challenge to the reconstructive surgeon. A thorough evaluation is key in directing the surgeon to the appropriate treatment methods. Aggressive and immediate exploration with primary repair of the facial nerve continues to be the standard of care for traumatic transection of the facial nerve. Secondary repair using dynamic techniques is preferred over static procedures, because the outcomes have proved to be superior. However, patients should be counseled that facial movement and symmetry are difficult to mimic and none of the procedures de

Pediatric facial trauma can present a challenge to even the more experienced plastic surgeon. Injuries to the head and neck may involve bone and soft tissues with an assortment of specialized organs and tissue elements involved. Because of the active nature of children, facial soft tissue injuries can be diverse and extensive as well as some of the more common injuries a plastic surgeon is asked to treat. In 2007, approximately 800,000 patients younger than 15 years presented to emergency departments around the country with significant open wounds of the head that required treatment. In this re

Surgical intervention remains a popular choice in patients seeking facial rejuvenation. Although uncommon, temporary or permanent peripheral nerve injury may complicate almost any type of invasive aesthetic procedure of the face, resulting in functional and psychological consequences for patients. Prompt recognition and appropriate intervention are necessary to avoid the long-term sequelae and improve the chances of complete neurologic recovery. Depending on the type of injury, various interventions may range from observation and close follow-up to interposition nerve grafting. This article re
