Family climates: family factors specific to disturbed eating and bulimia nervosa.

More than a decade of research has characterized the families of individuals with bulimia and bulimia anorexia (Anorexia Nervosa, Binge/Purging Type) as less expressive, less cohesive, and experiencing more conflicts than normal control families. This two-part study investigated variables believed more directly related to disturbed eating and bulimia as contributing to a "family climate for eating disorders." In Study 1. a nonclinical sample of 324 women who had just left home for college and a sample of 121 mothers evaluated their families. Principal-components analyses revealed the same fact…

Family matters in Canada: understanding and addressing family homelessness in Ontario.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness is becoming an international public health issue in most developed countries, including Canada. Homelessness is regarded as both political and socioeconomic problems warranting broad and consistent result-oriented approaches. METHODS: This paper represents the qualitative findings of a project that explored risk factors associated with family homelessness and strategies that could mitigate and prevent homelessness among families using a focused ethnographic study guided by the principles of participatory action research (PAR). The sample includes 36 family members res…

False family history of breast cancer in the family cancer clinic.

AIMS: Awareness of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer in both the general public and the medical profession is increasing. Individuals who may be at risk on the basis of a family history are requesting risk determination and appropriate management in a variety of settings. Risk determination relies largely on pedigree analysis and epidemiological data. METHODS: We describe five individuals presenting in the family cancer or genetic counselling clinic where a factitious family or personal history led to erroneous risk estimation. Common factors in these families are a history of benign breas…

Family extension and the elderly: economic, demographic, and family cycle factors.

This paper reports on the results of applying a multivariate regression model of living arrangements choices to census data on the 1970 U. S … ncome, the experience of divorce, and being male are all associated with a higher probability of nonfamily living. Widowhood has the same effect, but only for women. The central finding, however, is that there is no special role for the elderly in living arrangements choices.

Family contact, experience of family relationships, and views about family involvement in treatment among VA consumers with serious mental illness.

Family psychoeducation is a highly effective, but underused, evidence-based practice in the treatment of schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses. This study examined views about family relationships and family participation in care among a sample of 69 consumers with serious mental illness receiving treatment within the Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare system. We found that younger consumers and those with higher levels of psychiatric symptoms were more likely to report family conflict and distress. Of participating consumers, 67% wanted family participation in their psychiat…

Care of Diverse Families: LGBTQIA+ Families.

Approximately 29% of LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual/agender, and other orientations/identities) adults are raising a child, and 2 to 3.7 million children have an LGBTQIA+ parent. These families often experience challenges. Social challenges include exclusion and homophobic hostility directed at the child and/or family. Medical challenges include difficulty finding clinicians who provide a welcoming environment, and dealing with clinicians who do not understand LGBTQIA+ issues. Physicians can help address those challenges by examining their i…

Disturbed families or families disturbed: a reconsideration.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between anorexia nervosa (AN) and family disturbance has been a subject of debate since its first description. What began as a clear view of the pathologically disturbed family causing AN has become ever more complex over the decades. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review is to explore the literature to examine the changes and evolution of clinical opinion around family dysfunction and AN over the last 20 years. METHODS: A narrative review of heterogeneous studies in peer-reviewed publications sourced from the major databases, including PubMed and ScienceDirect, to i…

[A Family of Attenuated Familial Adenomatous Polyposis].

The proband was a 49-year-old woman who had undergone total colectomy, ileorectostomy, and bilateral ovariectomy for the treatment of cecal(T3N0)and sigmoid colon(T4a, N2b, M1c2[Ova], Stage Ⅳc)cancers. Pathological findings revealed 6 adenomas and 2 adenocarcinoma-in-adenomas in the right colon, other than advanced colon cancers. She had a family history of colorectal cancer meeting the Amsterdam Criteria I, but none of her relatives had definite polyposis. Considering the possibility of Lynch syndrome, the microsatellite-instability test and immunohistochemistry(IHC)examination of the mismatc…

Familial moyamoya disease in a Greek family.

Moyamoya disease (M-M) is characterized by progressive obstruction of the supraclinoid portion of internal carotid arteries and the proximal middle, anterior and posterior cerebral arteries, associated with the formation of a characteristic net of collateral vessels in the basal ganglia region. Clinical manifestations in childhood include transient ischaemic attacks, seizures and multiple infarcts. Approximately 7% of M-M cases are familial. We report two affected Greek siblings with typical clinical and neuroradiological findings of M-M. Linkage analysis of the whole family was consistent wit…

Familial acromegaly: studies in three families.

Acromegaly is usually regarded as a disease which arises sporadically except on those rare occasions in which it occurs as one component of … their asymptomatic relatives: a diagnosis of MEN 1 is therefore effectively excluded. In the third family, the presence of multiple subcutaneous lipomata in several members of the family and elevation of PTH levels in two (normocalcaemic) acromegalic index cases, might indicate a highly atypical presentation of MEN 1. None of the six acromegalic index c …

[Familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia. A new family].

A new example of familial hypocalciuric hypercalcaemia is reported. The family studied consists of 19 members over four generations. The first patient described in this study had already undergone a classical surgical operation for "primary hyperparathyroidism" before the correct diagnosis was established: that of a new syndrome described for the first time by Foley in 1972 and subsequently studied by Marx since 1977. The features of this syndrome are: hypercalcaemia accompanied by hypocalciuria, autosomal dominant transmission with strong penetrance, with early appearance of hypercalcaemia, a…

Familial mortality and familial incidence in cancer.

PURPOSE: An overwhelming majority of data on familial risk in cancer is based on incident cancer, whereas familiality in cancer mortality is largely unknown. If fatal form of cancer was a highly familial subtype, then familial risk for mortality may exceed that of incidence, which would be particularly relevant for clinical decision making and counseling. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The individuals in the nationwide Swedish Family-Cancer Database were classified according to family history of fatal and nonfatal cancer. Familial risks of incident and fatal concordant cancer were calculated for offsp…
