Breast lipoma with central fat necrosis: case report.

Fat necrosis of the breast is a benign non-suppurative inflammatory process of adipose tissue that most commonly occurs as the result of minor breast trauma. We present a case of a 40-years-old female with fat necrosis in a breast lipoma. She presented with an overlapping mass on the lateral quadrants. Mammography showed Well delineated radiolucent mass with peripheral "egg-shell" calcifications, that appeared an hypoechoic mass with posterior shadowing on ultrasonography. A history of accidental trauma raises the suspicion of fat necrosis. Pathology is necessary when radiological findings sim…

MRI findings of pericardial fat necrosis: case report.

Pericardial fat necrosis is an infrequent cause of acute chest pain and this can mimic acute myocardial infarction and acute pericarditis. We describe here a patient with the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of pericardial fat necrosis and this was correlated with the computed tomography (CT) findings. The MRI findings may be helpful for distinguishing pericardial fat necrosis from other causes of acute chest pain and from the fat-containing tumors in the cardiophrenic space of the anterior mediastinum.

Fat Necrosis: Correlation of Imaging Findings and Histopathology.

Fat necrosis is an inflammatory response arising from damage to adipose tissue. Fat necrosis is a commonly encountered benign entity in breast imaging and has a wide spectrum of imaging appearances. Although fat necrosis is most commonly seen after intervention or trauma, it may be idiopathic. Given the overlap in imaging characteristics between fat necrosis and malignancy, understanding the various manifestations of fat necrosis can aid accurate diagnosis and help avoid unnecessary biopsy. We describe the range of imaging characteristics, including both classic benign imaging features and non…

Epipericardial Fat Necrosis: Who Should Be a Candidate?

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of the present study were to estimate the frequency of epipericardial fat necrosis among patients undergoing chest CT for chest pain and to compare the clinical and laboratory data between patients with epipericardial fat necrosis and control subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of 7463 chest CT studies performed in the emergency department from July 2011 to December 2014 was conducted to collect data regarding patient demographic characteristics and CT findings. Twenty patients who had epipericardial fat necrosis diagnosed were defined as the main…

A Rare Presentation of a Newborn with Subcutaneous Fat Necrosis.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of newborn is a form of panniculitis that often occurs in term and post-term neonate with predisposing risk factors such as perinatal asphyxia and maternal gestational diabetes. A cutaneous involvement may be associated with metabolic complications such as hypoglycemia, hypercalcemia and hypertriglyceridemia. Here, we present a case of Subcutaneous fat necrosis of newborn with bilateral symmetrical involvement of both axillas in a perinatal asphyxiated newborn that has not been previously described in the literature. In this case, there were no major complications apa…

Subcutaneous fat necrosis: a complication of neuroprotective cooling.

Because neuroprotective cooling for hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE ) becomes more commonplace in NICU s, health care providers should be familiar with the complications of this therapy. Therapeutic cooling improves neurodevelopmental outcomes and has relatively few side effects. One unexpected outcome that has been reported is subcutaneous fat necrosis (SCFN). This column describes the problem, and recommends that NICU staff be vigilant in their observation for, as well as timely in their interventions to help prevent SCFN.

An unusual complication of subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis (SCFN) is a well-described cause of subcutaneous calcification occurring in a young infant. Calcification of areas of fat necrosis in the neonate is a rare condition. In this case, the radiographic demonstration of soft-tissue calcification revealed the skin calcification in the absence of clinical signs of SCFN and without hypercalcaemia in the first 48 h of life.

Fat necrosis of the newborn--report on two cases.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn is an uncommon disorder occurring during the prenatal stage. Generally occurring in full-term neonates or during the first four weeks after a traumatic delivery, the disorder is characterized by the appearance of hard subcutaneous nodules or plaques on the trunk, buttocks or thighs. It is normally a benign and transient condition, although it may be complicated by hypocalcemia, which requires close monitoring until skin lesions are cured. The authors describe two cases of subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn, one occurring in a full-term neonate and…

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn and lactic acidosis.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SFN) is an uncommon, self-limited condition of neonates and infants. However, hypercalcemia may be a potentially life-threatening complication of the otherwise self-healing process. Rare complications such as thrombocytopenia, hypertriglyceridemia, hypoglycemia, calcium deposits in the liver, inferior vena cava, atrial septum of the heart, and nephrocalcinosis have been reported. To our knowledge, this is the first description of a patient in whom lactic acidosis was encountered in an infant along with the other known complications of SFN.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis presenting as a large mass.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis, though a rare phenomenon, can occur in patients of all ages. In newborns, it is an uncommon, self-limited panniculitis of traumatic origin, while in adults it is most commonly encountered among women presenting to breast clinics following a trivial or unnoticed injury sustained long ago. An acute presentation of fat necrosis as a large mass, however, is quite unusual and that may confuse the observer. History of trauma gives a clue to the diagnosis. We report an interesting case of traumatic subcutaneous fat necrosis because of massage therapy in a 66-year-old lady.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn associated with anemia.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis (SFN) of the newborn characteristically affects full-term infants who have experienced perinatal distress, such as hypothermia, obstetric trauma, or asphyxia. We report a newborn who had pallor, deep breathing, and severe anemia immediately after birth. She developed SFN on the fourth postnatal day. Her condition improved after blood transfusions and the skin lesions resolved in 6 weeks. This appears to be the first report of SFN associated with anemia.

Atypical fat necrosis of the breast: the 'mycetoma' appearance.

A very unusual appearance of fat necrosis in the breast is described. The low density/hypo-echoic rim and high density/hyperechoic central part are shown on mammography and ultrasound, respectively. The mass had the appearance of a 'mycetoma' in a cavity in the lung. The radiological diagnosis of fat necrosis was confirmed by histopathology.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn and idiopathic hypercalcemia.

A newborn with important signs of fetal disturbance and respiratory distress and respiratory distress developed plaques on both buttocks 14 days after birth, with the clinical and histological characteristics of subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn. Fifteen days after the onset of the cutaneous signs, a discrete degree of hypercalcemia was detected. Its outcome was favorable due to the early establishment of a diet rich in medium-chain triglycerides and devoid of calcium and vitamin D. Sixteen cases of idiopathic hypercalcemia in newborn with subcutaneous fat necrosis have been reported of…

[Primary multinodular panniculitis or fat necrosis in children].

The authors report 4 cases of primary multinodular panniculitis. One was a typical Weber-Christian syndrome; the clinical picture of the others was intermediate between the Weber-Christian syndrome and the Rothmann-Makaï syndrome. A pancreatic or an enzymatic disorder were excluded. The hypothesis of an abnormal fragility of adipose tissue or of a failure in the mechanisms of protection against lipophagia is raised.

Mesenteric fat necrosis simulating a carcinoma of the cecum.

Fat necrosis in the mesentery is an unusual complication of an adjacent inflammatory process. This report demonstrates a case of fat necrosis resulting in multiple irregularly firm masses measuring up to 4.5 cm. in diameter which produced extrinsic pressure on the cecum and ascending colon, simulating a carcinoma radiographically and at surgery. The fat necrosis was caused by chronic appendicitis in association with pylephlebitis.

EXPERIMENTAL LIVER NECROSIS. V. THE FATS AND LIPOIDS.

1. Changes which occur in the fat content of the liver of dogs receiving haemotoxic serum bear no relation to the degree of necrosis produced by this serum. 2. An increase in water content of the tissue seldom occurs, but where present is due to the nitrogenous autolysis rather than to the deposition of fat. 3. The appearance of fat in the cell is not associated with a decomposition of the proteid component of the compound fats, but rather to a simple splitting off of the fatty radical. This is shown by the slight variations occurring in the percentage nitrogen of the fat-free substance. 4. Th
