What It Means to Become a Father.

For fathers, the transition to parenthood can be experienced as an emotional phase. Fathers often state feeling overlooked and unsupported during their transition to parenthood. This study addressed this issue by exploring what it means to become a father-a qualitative design with a phenomenological hermeneutical approach. Data were collected through open-ended interviews with 19 fathers living in Sweden. The participants were encouraged to reflect on the meaning of becoming a father. Becoming a father means feeling connectedness to their child, their partner, and their friends, as well as cre…

Charles Kelman: The Father of Phacoemulsification.

Charles D. Kelman was a brilliant American ophthalmologist who revolutionized cataract surgery by introducing phacoemulsification to replace extracapsular cataract extraction. He used an ultrasonic probe to emulsify and aspirate the lens through a small incision (3-4 mm). Kelman's technique met initial resistance at first, but it gained global acceptance after proving its safety and effectiveness in the management of cataractous eyes, and it has been the preferred technique until now. Today, the entire surgery is performed in 5-7 minutes. This technique also helped to reduce hospitalization af

Akira Endo: Father of Statins.

There was an unprecedented increase in cardiovascular mortality during the 20th century, which ultimately led to a deeper understanding of cholesterol and its role in cardiovascular disease. Akira Endo is a medical innovator who sought to change the tide of this epidemic. He is often referred to as the "Father of Statins" because of his identification of the first 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) inhibitor, which fostered a new era in cholesterol treatment. The offspring of this discovery - statin medications - changed the landscape of cardiovascular prevention and improved outc

Louis pasteur, the father of immunology?

Louis Pasteur is traditionally considered as the progenitor of modern immunology because of his studies in the late nineteenth century that popularized the germ theory of disease, and that introduced the hope that all infectious diseases could be prevented by prophylactic vaccination, as well as also treated by therapeutic vaccination, if applied soon enough after infection. However, Pasteur was working at the dawn of the appreciation of the microbial world, at a time when the notion of such a thing as an immune system did not exist, certainly not as we know it today, more than 130 years later

Fathers' Cocaine Use and Parent-Child Feeding Interactions.

Background: Limited research has explored father-child interactions during feeding in dyads where fathers use cocaine, despite the critical role these interactions play in infant development. Methods: This study aimed to evaluate whether paternal cocaine use, psychopathology (measured via the SCL-90/R), and difficult child temperament (assessed using the QUIT) are linked to lower-quality father-child feeding interactions (evaluated through the SVIA) compared to dyads with non-substance-using fathers. Results: Father-child feeding interactions in the substance-using (SU) group were significantl…

Childbirth as a traumatic event for attendant fathers.

Background: Negative reactions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following childbirth have been increasingly reported in mothers, particularly following objectively and subjectively difficult childbirth experiences. A small body of research has examined fathers' reactions to childbirth, with mixed results. Objective: The study aimed to further these studies, investigating whether objective and subjective aspects of fathers' participation in childbirth were related to levels of PTSD and fear of childbirth symptoms, in the first year following childbirth.Method: In total, 224 fathers …

[Fathers and peripartum mental illness: the neglected parent?].

Fathers also play an important role during pregnancy and the postpartum period, both for the partner and for the child. With changes in society and increasing early involvement in the care of infants, the father-child relationship has become increasingly more important in recent years. There is growing evidence that fathers can also suffer from mental illnesses during their partner's pregnancy and especially after the birth of a child. As the transition to the role of a father is a major change in a man's life, the birth of a child can be a life event that contributes to a first time mental il…

Got daddy issues? Fathers impact on perinatal outcomes.

Mothers' genetics as well as their environment, behaviors, and social determinants of health are all important factors influencing short and long term childhood outcomes. There is an emerging body of literature investigating the extent to which fathers also contribute to their offspring's future health. We review fathers' impact on short term birth outcomes, longer term health, and neurodevelopment to emphasize the inter-relatedness of individual paternal traits. Factors that are linked to offspring outcomes include paternal demographics, race, stress, marriage and support, mental health, and …

Fathers and maternal risk for physical child abuse.

This study set out to examine father-related factors predicting maternal physical child abuse risk in a national birth cohort of 1,480 families. In-home and phone interviews were conducted with mothers when index children were 3 years old. Predictor variables included the mother-father relationship status; father demographic, economic, and psychosocial variables; and key background factors. Outcome variables included both observed and self-reported proxies of maternal physical child abuse risk. At the bivariate level, mothers married to fathers were at lower risk for most indicators of materna…

Fathers' grief after the death of a child.

The purpose of this study was to describe fathers' grief and the changes the death of a child has brought to fathers' lives. Participants included eight fathers who had lost a child. The data were collected using a questionnaire with open-ended questions and by interviews. Content analysis was used as a means of data analysis. The grief of the fathers manifested itself individually and dynamically and also in various anticipatory feelings and in physical, social, and behavioural reactions. The death of the child brought both positive and negative changes to the fathers' lives. Mental health nu…

Parenting disruptive preschoolers: experiences of mothers and fathers.

This study examined parental functioning and interactions with young children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), with emphasis on differences between mothers and fathers in their responses to their child and in their unique contributions to the prediction of child disruptive behavior. Participants were 53 3- to 6-year olds with ODD who presented for treatment with two parents. Mothers reported more severe disruptive behavior and higher parenting stress than fathers. During parent-child interactions, mothers showed more responsiveness than fathers, even though children were more complian…
