Surgery for fractured neck of femur - are patients adequately consented?

INTRODUCTION: Obtaining valid consent is a legal and ethical obligation when performing any procedure in clinical practice. This study was performed to identify the validity and effectiveness of the new consent form and any potential improvement that could be made when taking consent. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Case notes of 173 patients undergoing surgery for fractured neck of femur were retrospectively reviewed. Risks and complications of the surgery as listed on the consent form were noted. Sixty-five cases were excluded from the study as they had either old consent forms with no risks recorded

Fractured neck of femur in black patients: a prospective study.

We explored the role of iron overload, deficiency of vitamin C and alcohol abuse in the aetiology of cervical and intertrochanteric fractures of the neck of the femur as a result of minor trauma. We studied prospectively 72 patients (45 men, 27 women). Levels of serum iron markers, vitamin C and alcohol markers were measured. Consumption of alcohol was estimated using questionnaires. The findings were compared with those of an age- and gender-matched control group. The mean age of the men was 59.5 years and of the women 66.9 years, with a male predominance. In the men, iron overload, as shown

[The value of the Duopleet prosthesis for the treatment of femur neck fractures].

The clinical course of 68 patients with femoral neck fractures is reported. Fracture management was chosen regarding age and accompanying health defects. Fracture management, operation time, complications, mobilization results and hospitalization time is described, compared to other authors and discussed. The results favor the implantation of a Duopleet prosthesis as the salvage operation of choice for femoral neck fractures of old patients beyond 75. Other methods are considered to remain valuable with differentiated indication.

Pathogenesis and treatment of certain fatigue fractures of the neck of the femur.

During the unipedal phase of walking, it has been shown (Fischer, Fick & Pauwels) that the forces acting on the hip obey the fundamental laws of mechanics and can be calculated and graphically recorded fairly precisely. In these circumstances, the bones, muscles and tendons act reciprocally in such a way as to achieve the best possible motor unit, a complex machine designed to achieve the maximum work with the minimum material and the minimum expenditure of energy. This explains why, if the bones undergo changes in form or structure, complicated pathogenetic mechanisms are invoked which are in

Treatment of patients with fractured neck of the femur in a combined unit.

Multiple pathology is characteristic of patients with fractured neck of femur. Orthopaedic surgeons and members of the extended care service should combine their efforts to lessen the disability which frequently follow this fracture. The results of follow-up of first 82 patients after discharge from a combined unit are reported.

[Fractures of the neck of femur in young children (author's transl)].

The problems of femoral neck fractures in young children are discussed. Results of 12 own cases are reviewed with an average age of the patients of 7.5 years at the time of accident. The average time between accident and last examination was 12 years. The operative technique, pre- and postoperative care, indications for conservative treatment and late complications are discussed. All types of fractures should be treated operatively. K-wire fixation is sufficient in most cases and does not damage the epiphyseal plate. Immobilization in POP spika is advisable for 6 weeks. With delayed operative

Miss-a-nail Technique of Femur Neck Fracture with Femur Interlocking Nail in Situ: A Technical Description.

INTRODUCTION: The neck of the femur fracture is more prevalent in the elderly, but can occur in young individuals due to high-energy trauma. Management of neck femur fracture with the femur interlocking nail in situ is a technically demanding case. CASE REPORT: A 24-year-old male with a femoral neck fracture in the presence of an in-situ femoral interlocking nail was successfully managed using the MISS-A-NAIL technique. The goal of the management was an anatomical reduction of the neck of the femur fracture without removing the in situ femur interlocking nail, getting a stable hold and fixati

Valgus osteotomy for nonunion and neglected neck of femur fractures.

Nonunion neck of femur can be a difficult problem to treat, particularly in the young, and is associated with high complication rates of avascular necrosis due to the precarious blood supply and poor biomechanics. The various treatment options that have been described can be broadly divided according to the aim of improving either biology or biomechanics. Surgeries aimed at improving the biology, such as vascularized fibula grafting, have good success rates but require high levels of expertise and substantial resources. A popular surgical treatment aimed at improving the biomechanics-valgus in

Fractures of the head and neck of the femur in children: an outcome study.

Fractures of the head and neck of the femur in children are very rare, occurring only after a high-velocity trauma, e.g. a fall from a height. This analysis shows the clinical course of traumatic femoral head and neck fractures in paediatric patients. Predisposing factors for poor outcome or fracture complications, such as non-union or femoral head necrosis, are described. Between 1993 and 2006, 16 paediatric patients with proximal femoral fractures were treated at the Level One Trauma Centre of the Medical University of Vienna. The minimum follow-up was two years. Inclusion criteria were age

Critical path analysis for the management of fractured neck of femur.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of a critical path analysis, used as a management tool, on the efficiency of clinical service delivery for patients with a fractured neck of femur. It is a before-and-after study of the medical records of all patients admitted between October 1992 and October 1993 with a primary diagnosis of fractured neck of femur, but excluding patients under 50 years old and those with multiple fractures or metastatic disease. Patients fell into two groups: those admitted in the six months before the introduction of a clinical management program based on a c
