Nuclear Resonance Vibrational Spectroscopy Definition of Peroxy Intermediates in Catechol Dioxygenases: Factors that Determine Extra- versus Intradiol Cleavage.

The extradiol dioxygenases (EDOs) and intradiol dioxygenases (IDOs) are nonheme iron enzymes that catalyze the oxidative aromatic ring cleavage of catechol substrates, playing an essential role in the carbon cycle. The EDOs and IDOs utilize very different FeII and FeIII active sites to catalyze the regiospecificity in their catechol ring cleavage products. The factors governing this difference in cleavage have remained undefined. The EDO homoprotocatechuate 2,3-dioxygenase (HPCD) and IDO protocatechuate 3,4-dioxygenase (PCD) provide an opportunity to understand this selectivity, as key O2 inte

Low intensity magnetic separation of vivianite induced by iron reduction on the surface layer of Fe(III)[Fe(0)] iron scrap.

Phosphorus (P) recovery through vivianite, which can be found in activated sludge, surplus sludge and digested sludge in the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), is a cutting-edge and efficient technology in recent years. However, how to generate and separate vivianite in an effective and economical way with natural iron oxide mineral was still the bottleneck to limit its application. Therefore, in this study, the P recovery efficiency (EP) and vivianite recovery efficiency (EV) of three kinds of iron oxides were investigated. We found that the EP of Akaganeite was 1.83 times and 4.88 times hi

Secondary Coordination Sphere Influences the Formation of Fe(III)-O or Fe(III)-OH in Nitrite Reduction: A Synthetic and Computational Study.

The reduction of nitrite (NO2-) to generate nitric oxide (NO) is a significant area of research due to their roles in the global nitrogen cycle. Here, we describe various modifications of the tris(5-cyclohexyliminopyrrol-2-ylmethyl)amine H3[N(piR)3] ligand where the steric bulk and acidity of the secondary coordination sphere were explored in the non-heme iron system for nitrite reduction. The cyclohexyl and 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl variants of the ligand were used to probe the mechanism of nitrite reduction. While previously stoichiometric addition of nitrite to the iron(II)-species generated an

Quantifying sulfidization and non-sulfidization in long-term in-situ microbial colonized As(V)-ferrihydrite coated sand columns: Insights into As mobility.

Sulfide-induced reduction (sulfidization) of arsenic (As)-bearing Fe(III) (oxyhydro)oxides may lead to As mobilization in aquifer systems. However, little is known about the relative contributions of sulfidization and non-sulfidization of Fe(III) (oxyhydro)oxides reduction to As mobilization. To address this issue, high As groundwater with low sulfide (LS) and high sulfide (HS) concentrations were pumped through As(V)-bearing ferrihydrite-coated sand columns (LS-column and HS-column, respectively) being settled within wells in the western Hetao Basin, China. Sulfidization of As(V)-bearing ferr

New insight into the mechanism of remediation of chromium containing soil by synergetic disposal of ferrous sulfate and digestate.

In this work, an innovative technology by using ferrous sulfate combined with digestate, was applied to the Cr (VI) reduction. In the combined process, 3% ferrous sulfate, 5% digestate, 2% glucose, 30 °C and 50% moisture content were proved to be the optimal operating conditions. The combined process achieved 100% reduction of 3000 mg/Kg Cr (VI) within 10 days. Ferrous sulfate and digestate had a synergistic effect on Cr (VI) reduction. XPS analysis showed that Cr (VI) was reduced to Cr (III) in the combined treatment group. Functional microorganisms in digestate played an important role in th

Enhanced phosphate removal from wastewater by using in situ generated fresh trivalent Fe composition through the interaction of Fe(II) on CaCO3.

Excessive existences of nutrients such as phosphate in the aqueous environment remain as a heavy concern although many researches have been reported for dealing with their removal. Based on the understanding toward the interactions of Fe compounds with phosphate and carbonate from many available researches, we designed a very simple and efficient approach for phosphate removal by using in situ generated fresh trivalent Fe composition through the interaction of Fe(II) as FeSO4 on CaCO3. Addition and agitation of Fe(II) and CaCO3 simultaneously to phosphate solution allowed an amorphous Fe(III)-

Molecular Identification of Cr(VI) Removal Mechanism on Vivianite Surface.

Experimental and theoretical studies were conducted to identify the molecular-scale reaction mechanism for Cr(VI) removal by a ferrous phosphate mineral, vivianite. The surface-normalized rate constant for Cr(VI) removal in a vivianite suspension at pH 7 was higher than those obtained for other Fe(II)-containing minerals (i.e., magnetite and pyrite). The highest rate constant was obtained at pH 5, which was 35- and 264-times higher than those obtained at pH 7 and 9, respectively, indicating the dramatic acceleration of removal kinetics with decreasing pH of suspension. The X-ray photoelectron

Effect of processing cement to concrete on hexavalent chromium levels.

Hexavalent chromium sensitization is known to occur from exposure to cement. Concrete is a mixture of cement, sand, rock, and water. Admixtures are compounds used to retard or accelerate concrete setting time. Some countries use ferrous sulfate to reduce hexavalent chromium in cement. We evaluated and compared hexavalent chromium levels in cement, rock (aggregate), and wet and dry concrete in samples from Singapore, Ireland, Denmark, Australia, and the United States. Cement from Denmark contains ferrous sulfate. The effect of representative admixtures on hexavalent chromium concentration in co

Supersaturation-driven seed optimization and nucleation-regime transition in Vivianite crystallization.

To address the prolonged induction time and unstable phase selectivity associated with the nonclassical nucleation of vivianite, this study established a supersaturation-driven comparative framework to elucidate seed-dependent dominant nucleation mechanisms. This framework enables controllable formation of the target vivianite phase. The phosphorus recovery results showed that graphite performed best at 4 g L-1 and 100 μm, achieving 85.5% PO43- removal at 0.5 h, yet with relatively low Fe utilization (consumed Fe/P = 1.30-1.35). In contrast, the optimal combinations for sponge iron and viviani

Interface and Bimetallic Sites Synergistic Regulation of CuFe2O4/Fe2O3 Nanotubes for High Response Detection of 2-Chloroethyl Ethyl Sulfide Gas.

Mustard gas is an extremely dangerous chemical substance, and its leakage or misuse poses a serious threat to the environment and public health. It is challenging to develop a fast, efficient, and real-time sensor for the detection of the mustard gas simulant (2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide = 2-CEES). In this study, CuFe2O4/Fe2O3 nanotubes were assembled in situ via a controllable solvothermal method. Structural characterization confirms that the CuFe2O4/Fe2O3 nanotubes possesses bimetallic active sites and abundant heterointerfaces, which synergistically enhance the sensing performance of the ma

Enhanced terrestrial Fe(II) mobilization identified through a novel mechanism of microbially driven cave formation in Fe(III)-rich rocks.

Most cave formation requires mass separation from a host rock in a process that operates outward from permeable pathways to create the cave void. Given the poor solubility of Fe(III) phases, such processes are insufficient to account for the significant iron formation caves (IFCs) seen in Brazilian banded iron formations (BIF) and associated rock. In this study we demonstrate that microbially-mediated reductive Fe(III) dissolution is solubilizing the poorly soluble Fe(III) phases to soluble Fe(II) in the anoxic zone behind cave walls. The resultant Fe(III)-depleted material (termed sub muros)

The development of a novel ferric phytate compound for iron fortification of bouillons (part I).

In a series of two studies, we report the development (this study) and evaluation (part II) of a novel ferric phytate compound designed as a condiment iron fortificant. Condiments are used as iron fortification vehicles to reduce the prevalence  of iron deficiency. The challenge for iron fortificants in e.g. a bouillon matrix is to avoid undesired sensory effects and to ensure a reasonable cost. We added phytic acid to chelate iron, and hydrolysed protein to counteract the inhibiting effect of phytic acid on iron bioaccessibility. We characterised four novel ferric phytate compounds, destabili

Iron Vacancy Accelerates Fe(II)-Induced Anoxic As(III) Oxidation Coupled to Iron Reduction.

Chemical oxidation of As(III) by iron (Fe) oxyhydroxides has been proposed to occur under anoxic conditions and may play an important role in stabilization and detoxification of As in subsurface environments. However, this reaction remains controversial due to lack of direct evidence and poorly understood mechanisms. In this study, we show that As(III) oxidation can be facilitated by Fe oxyhydroxides (i.e., goethite) under anoxic conditions coupled with the reduction of structural Fe(III). An excellent electron balance between As(V) production and Fe(III) reduction is obtained. The formation o

Speciation analysis and formation mechanism of iron-phosphorus compounds during chemical phosphorus removal process.

Iron (Fe) salt was applied extensively to remove phosphorus (P) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Exploring the formation mechanism of iron-phosphorus compounds (FePs) during the chemical P removal (CPR) process is beneficial to P recovery. In this study, the performance of P removal, FePs speciation analysis and the kinetics of P removal under different conditions (pH, Fe/P molar ratio (Fe/Pmol), type of Fe salt, dissolved organic matters) were comprehensively investigated. More than 95% of P was removed under the optimal conditions with pH = 4.7, Fe/Pmol = 2, FeCl3 or polymeric ferric

In vitro studies of the mechanism of inhibition of rat liver uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase activity by ferrous iron under anaerobic conditions.

Human porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) is an unusual consequence of common hepatic disorders such as alcoholic liver disease and iron overload, where hepatic iron plays a key role in the expression of the metabolic lesion, i.e., defective hepatic decarboxylation of porphyrinogens. In this investigation, kinetic studies on a partially purified rat liver uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase have been conducted under controlled conditions to determine how iron perturbs porphyrinogen decarboxylation in vitro. The enzyme, assayed strictly under anaerobic conditions in the dark, was inhibited progressively b

Pyocyanin and 1-Hydroxyphenazine Promote Anaerobic Killing of Pseudomonas aeruginosa via Single-Electron Transfer with Ferrous Iron.

Previously, it was reported that natural phenazines are able to support the anaerobic survival of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA14 cells via electron shuttling, with electrodes poised as the terminal oxidants (Y. Wang, S. E. Kern, and D. K. Newman, J Bacteriol 192:365-369, 2010, https://doi.org/10.1128/JB.01188-09). The present study shows that both pyocyanin (PYO) and 1-hydroxyphenazine (1-OHPHZ) promoted the anaerobic killing of PA14 Δphz cells presumably via a single-electron transfer reaction with ferrous iron. However, phenazine-1-carboxylic acid (PCA) did not affect anaerobic survival in the

Oxidation of p-hydroxybenzoic acid by Fenton's reagent.

Fenton's reagent has been shown to be a feasible technique to treat phenolic-type compounds present in a variety of food processing industry wastewaters. A model compound, p-hydroxybenzoic acid was oxidised by continuously pumping two solutions of ferrous iron and hydrogen peroxide. Typical operating variables like reagent feeding concentrations and flowrate, temperature and pH were studied. A mechanism of reactions based on the classical Fenton's chemistry was assumed, and computed concentration profiles of the parent compound, ferrous ion and dihydroxybenzene were compared to experimental re

Linear Free Energy Relationship for Predicting the Rate Constants of Munition Compound Reduction by the Fe(II)-Hematite and Fe(II)-Goethite Redox Couples.

Abiotic reduction by iron minerals is arguably the most important fate process for munition compounds (MCs) in subsurface environments. No model currently exists that can predict the abiotic reduction rates of structurally diverse MCs by iron (oxyhydr)oxides. We performed batch experiments to measure the rate constants for the reduction of three classes of MCs (poly-nitroaromatics, nitramines, and azoles) by hematite or goethite in the presence of aqueous Fe2+. The surface area-normalized reduction rate constant (kSA) depended on the aqueous-phase one-electron reduction potential (EH1) of the

Pore-Size-Dependent Kinetics and Product Distribution of Fe(II)-Catalyzed Ferrihydrite Transformation.

Fe(II)-catalyzed ferrihydrite (Fh) transformation is a widely occurring biogeochemical process in the porous media of anaerobic soils and sediments, but how pore-scale spaces affect the kinetics and product distribution of Fh transformation remains poorly understood. This study investigated the transformation of Fh nanoparticle film across a continuum of sizes of pore-scale spaces created by pressing a glass bead onto the film and immersing in 2 mM and 10 mM FeSO4 at pH = 7.0. While lepidocrocite (Lp) dominated over goethite (Gt) on the static Fh film, both minerals were observed to preferenti

Mechanistic Insight into Electron Transfer from Fe(II)-Bearing Clay Minerals to Fe (Hydr)oxides.

Electron transfer (ET) is the essence of most biogeochemical processes related to element cycling and contaminant attenuation, whereas ET between different minerals and the controlling mechanism remain elusive. Here, we used surface-associated Fe(II) as a proxy to explore ET between reduced nontronite NAu-2 (rNAu-2) and Fe (hydr)oxides in their coexisting systems. Results showed that ET could occur from rNAu-2 to ferrihydrite but not to goethite, and the ET amount was determined by the number of reactive sites and the reduction potential difference between rNAu-2 and ferrihydrite.
