BACKGROUND: Pituitary sarcomas are rare clinical entities most often encountered as secondary neoplasms representing late sequelae of radiation therapy to the sellar region. Primary pituitary fibrosarcomas (PPFS), in contrast, are exceptionally rare tumors with very few cases described in the literature thus far. Herein, we present a case of PFFS and describe it in the context of the existing literature.

Hereby we wish to present the clinical and pathological results of a rare paratesticular sarcome of the spermatic cord. This tumor was a fibrosarcoma in a 55 year old male that started in a most unusual way and developed very quickly. We practised a radical orquitectomy with inguinal ligation of the pedicule without post-operatory therapy. After a 5 year follow up, there is no trace of clinical or radiological recurrence in the region or metastasis. We consider radical surgery to be the only therapeutic alternative, even for cases of fast developing, being in our case a good pronostic.

The authors report the case of an infant with urticaria pigmentosa who developed infantile fibrosarcoma. The tumor was successfully resected but the skin lesions have persisted. This is the first report of a fibrosarcoma in association with urticaria pigmentosa. A brief review is presented of the available medical literature on associations of solid tumors with mastocytosis.

Congenital fibrosarcoma is a rare tumor that usually presents as a mass lesion involving the arm or leg of a neonate. No ultrasonographic description of such a neoplasm in the prenatal period has been reported. We present the sonographic findings of a tumor, discovered in an unusual site in utero, that, on postmortem examination, was demonstrated to be a fibrosarcoma.

Maffucci's syndrome, a congenital condition of generalized mesodermal dysplasia, is most often associated with multiple enchondromas and soft tissue hemangiomas or lymphangiomas. This case report describes the development of an unusual ovarian fibrosarcoma and subsequent ovarian adenofibroma in a young woman with the syndrome. The importance of aggressive surveillance in this and similar orthopedic syndromes is stressed.

AIMS: Low-grade fibrosarcomas are tumours that mainly affect the extremities and trunk of adults of either sex. Among these, low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (FMS), hyalinizing spindle cell tumour with giant collagen rosettes (HST) and sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma (SEF) are well-established entities. In this study, our aim was to describe a group of low-grade fibrosarcomatous tumours, which could not be encompassed by these entities. These low-grade fibrosarcomas, not otherwise specified (FNOS) were provisionally designated as 'fibrosarcoma, low-grade fibroblastic type'.

This represents the first published case report of mediastinal fibrosarcoma in a dog. An 8-year-old male neutered mixed breed dog was presented for evaluation of lethargy and increased panting. Fibrosarcomas are rare, malignant neoplasms of mesenchymal origin. Fibrosarcomas appear to be sporadic, but cases of fibrosarcomas secondary to radiation of nasopharyngeal carcinomas have been reported. Paranasal sinus fibrosarcomas (PNFS) are even rarer with few cases being reported since the 1950s. A fibrosarcoma of periosteal origin was identified in the oral cavity of a 22-yr-old male captive Siamese crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis). The diagnosis was based upon the gross and light microscopical examination. The mesenchymal histogenesis was derived from the capability of the cells to produce collagen fibers. The invasive growth and the polymorphous cells in combination with the low mitotic index suggest a low-order malignancy. Attempts by immunohistochemical staining techniques to identify the specific lineage of the neoplastic cells and the expressed collagen type were unsuccessful.

A highly malignant fibrosarcoma which arose in or close to the mammary gland of a 12 year old Ayrshire cow, with metastases in local lymph nodes, lungs, liver, kidney and adrenal glands has been described. The tumors were densely cellular and consisted of interweaving bands of fusiform cells with a high mitotic index. Infiltration of normal tissues and invasion of blood vessels were characteristic features. Ultrastructural study of the cells revealed mesenchymal cells with abundance of rough endoplasmic reticulum and cytoplasmic vesicles and they were closely invested with collagen fibers.

Three cases of fibrosarcoma of the vulva are reported. In two, surgical resection resulted in remission lasting over four years. In the third case, presenting with metastasis of the lung and liver, the patient died without surgery having been carried out. The low mitotic index found in the first two cases seems to lead to a favourable prognosis, whereas the inferior vulvar localization found in the last case seems to be more dangerous because of its diffusion into the paravaginal space.
