Navon letters affect face learning and face retrieval.

Identifying the local letters of a Navon letter (a large letter made up of smaller different letters) prior to recognition causes impairment in accuracy, while identifying the global letters of a Navon letter causes an enhancement in recognition accuracy (Macrae & Lewis, 2002). This effect may result from a transfer-inappropriate processing shift (TIPS) (Schooler, 2002). The present experiment extends research on the underlying mechanism of this effect by exploring this Navon effect on face learning as well as face recognition. The results of the two experiments revealed that when the Navon ta

Analysis of object motion in the ventral part of the medial superior temporal area of the macaque visual cortex.

1. The medial superior temporal area (MST) is an extrastriate area of the macaque visual cortex. Cells in MST have large receptive fields and respond to moving stimuli with directional selectivity. We previously suggested that the dorsal part of MST is mainly involved in analysis of field motion caused by movements of the animal itself, because most cells in the dorsal part preferentially responded to movements of a wide textured field rather than to movements of a small stimulus. To determine whether the remaining ventral part of MST differs in function from the dorsal part, we examined prope

Characteristics of visual seeking and evoked potentials in the extrastriate areas of the cortex in humans.

Studies in 11 young, healthy subjects addressed the characteristics of visual seeking (time taken, errors) on changes in the parameters of the target element to be sought (shape, color, and location) in an environment containing heterogeneous white distractors. Evoked potentials (EP) were recorded in six cortical leads (P3, P4, T3, T4, T5, T6) and the late endogenous components of EP were studied, i.e., the N2 and P3 components (standard terminology), as these components are known to change when the type of search changes, in the zone of so-called late selection. When the search difficulty inc

Computerized screening for visual stress in children with dyslexia.

Visual stress-a condition in which unpleasant visual symptoms are experienced when reading-has been reported to be more prevalent in dyslexic individuals but at the present time the relationship between dyslexia and visual stress remains controversial. ViSS, a computerized visual stress screener that incorporates reading-like visual search, has recently shown promise in studies with unselected samples of primary and secondary school children. This study investigated the use of ViSS with dyslexic children. Dyslexic children identified as having high visual stress showed significantly higher per

Visuomotor priming by pictures of hand postures: perspective matters.

Observing hand postures interacts with the preparation of similar actions. This may be due to motor encoding of the observed displays and/or to enhanced visual processing induced by motor planning. We studied the effects of the observer's perspective on motor representation, using a visuomotor priming task with simple responses. Participants were asked to grasp a bar in horizontal or vertical orientation. In Experiment 1, the prime stimuli were pictures of a hand in either "Own" or "Other perspective", and their orientation could be congruent or incongruent with the pre-specified grasping acti

Is 20/20 vision good enough? Visual acuity differences within the normal range predict contour element detection and integration.

Contour integration (CI) combines appropriately aligned and oriented elements into continuous boundaries. Collinear facilitation (CF) occurs when a low-contrast oriented element becomes more visible when flanked by collinear high-contrast elements. Both processes rely at least partly on long-range horizontal connections in early visual cortex, and thus both have been extensively studied to understand visual cortical functioning in aging, development, and clinical disorders. Here, we ask: Can acuity differences within the normal range predict CI or CF? To consider this question, we measured bin

Object-based attention benefits reveal selective abnormalities of visual integration in autism.

A pervasive integration deficit could provide a powerful and elegant account of cognitive processing in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). However, in the case of visual Gestalt grouping, typically assessed by tasks that require participants explicitly to introspect on their own grouping perception, clear evidence for such a deficit remains elusive. To resolve this issue, we adopt an index of Gestalt grouping from the object-based attention literature that does not require participants to assess their own grouping perception. Children with ASD and mental- and chronological-age matched typically

Contour-integration deficits on the intact side of the visual field in hemianopia patients.

OBJECTIVE: Visual impairments in hemianopia are thought to be exclusively caused by the reduced visual field size. However, the primary lesion may affect the contralateral hemisphere through damage of interhemispheric projections. The question therefore arises if the presumed "intact" hemifield is perceptually impaired. METHODS: Three hemianopia patients and three matched controls carried out a Yes/No figure detection task with their intact side of the visual field. The figure (square) contours were composed of non-contiguous Gabor patches embedded in a random patch array of different backgro

More GABA, less distraction: a neurochemical predictor of motor decision speed.

People vary markedly in the efficiency with which they can resolve competitive action decisions, even simple ones such as shifting gaze to one stimulus rather than another. We found that an individual's ability to rapidly resolve such competition is predicted by the concentration of GABA, the main inhibitory neurotransmitter, in a region of frontal cortex that is relevant for eye movements, but not in a control region (occipital cortex).

Comparison of form and motion coherence processing in autistic spectrum disorders and dyslexia.

A large body of research has reported visual perception deficits in both people with dyslexia and autistic spectrum disorders. In this study, we compared form and motion coherence detection between a group of adults with high-functioning autism, a group with Asperger's disorder, a group with dyslexia, and a matched control group. It was found that motion detection was intact in dyslexia and Asperger. Individuals with high-functioning autism showed a general impaired ability to detect coherent form and motion. Participants with Asperger's syndrome showed lower form coherence thresholds than the

Visual perception without awareness in a patient with posterior cortical atrophy: impaired explicit but not implicit processing of global information.

A patient with progressive posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) was examined on several tests of visual cognition. The patient displayed multiple visual cognitive deficits, which included problems identifying degraded stimuli, attending to two or more stimuli simultaneously, recognizing faces, tracing simple visual stimuli, matching simple shapes, and copying objects. The patient was also impaired in identifying visual targets contained at the global level within global-local stimuli (i.e., smaller letters that compose a larger letter). Although the patient denied any conscious awareness of the gl

The effects of driving experience on responses to a static hazard perception test.

Novice drivers exhibit deficits in hazard perception that are likely to increase their risk of collisions. We developed a static hazard perception test that presents still images to observers and requires them to indicate the presence of a traffic conflict that would lead to a collision. Responses to these scenes were obtained for young adult novice (N=29) and experienced drivers (N=27). Additionally, participants rated the hazard risk and clutter of each scene. Novice drivers rated traffic conflicts as less hazardous and responded more slowly to them. Using a subset of 21 scenes, we were able

Children's performance in complex listening conditions: effects of hearing loss and digital noise reduction.

PURPOSE: To determine the effect of hearing loss (HL) on children's performance for an auditory task under demanding listening conditions and to determine the effect of digital noise reduction (DNR) on that performance. METHOD: Fifty children with normal hearing (NH) and 30 children with HL (8-12 years of age) categorized words in the presence of auditory or visual competitors, or both. Stimuli were presented at 50 dB SPL at a 0-dB signal-to-noise ratio. Children with HL were fitted with behind-the-ear hearing aids that had DNR technology. When DNR was activated, output decreased 4 dB, and si

Exploring the dynamics of aphasic word production using the picture-word interference task: a case study.

In this study, we use an auditory picture-word interference task to examine an anomic individual, NP. NP produced semantic errors in picture naming, but his comprehension was relatively well preserved. In the task, pictures to be named were accompanied by semantically, phonologically or unrelated distractors, presented at onsets ranging from -200ms (before target) to +400ms (after target). Naming latencies were measured. A group of 12 older controls showed semantic interference (slower latencies with semantic than with unrelated distractors), which was significant at -200ms, and steadily dimin

The influence of some parental characteristics on children's primary abilities and field independence: a study of adopted children.

The Children's Embedded Figures Test and measures of V, P, N and S abilities were administered to 5-7-year-old Belgian children (33 boys and 36 girls) adopted early in life. These child variables were correlated with the main factorial dimensions of the adoptive parents' answers on the Parental Attitude Research Instrument and on Buehler's Life Goals Inventory and with the adoptive mother's child-rearing practices, determined through an interview. The PARI dimensions were unrelated to children's test performances. Reinforcement of competition and independence, an interview variable, was signif

Integrative agnosia following progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy.

A 43 year-old man with presumed progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy developed difficulty recognizing objects and faces in the presence of adequate visual acuity and visual fields. His copying and matching of line drawings was intact, suggesting that his agnosia was associative. However, he had difficulty perceiving overlapping forms and drawings of single objects as integrated wholes. Unlike control subjects, he made fewer errors identifying silhouettes compared to line drawings with internal details. These alterations, together with his feature-by-feature descriptions of objects and co

The effects of differential training procedures on linked perceptual class formation.

When the stimuli in one perceptual class (A') become related to the stimuli in another perceptual class (B'), the two are functioning as a single linked perceptual class. A common linked perceptual class would be the sounds of a person's voice (class A') and the pictures of that person (class B'). Such classes are ubiquitous in real world settings. We describe the effects of a variety of training procedures on the formation of these classes. The results could account for the development of naturally occurring linked perceptual classes. Two perceptual classes (A' and B') were formed in Experime

The attentional blink reveals sluggish attentional shifting in adolescents with specific language impairment.

Rapid processing deficits have been the subject of much debate in the literature on specific language impairment (SLI). Hari and Renvall (2001) [Hari, R. & Renvall, H. (2001). Impaired processing of rapid stimulus sequences in dyslexia. Trends in cognitive sciences, 5, 525-532.] proposed that the source of this deficit can be attributed to sluggish attentional shifting abilities. That is, more time is required to shift attention between stimuli. To test this claim, 26 adolescents with SLI (divided into two subgroups to control for differences in non-verbal intelligence) and 14 controls were pr
