In a Bancroftian filariasis survey on the coast of Tanzania microfilaria rates rose with age reaching 53% in the 60-69 year group followed by a slight fall above this age. The most important clinical manifestations were hydrocoele, funiculitis and elephantiasis, with hydrocoele presenting the most serious public health problem. Hydrocoele rates increased with age reaching 90% above the age of 70. The highest proportion of large hydrocoeles were also in the older age groups. A satisfactory methodology was established for the planning of future surveys leading to control.

Most endemic regions for lymphatic filariasis (LF), caused by Brugia malayi and Wuchereria bancrofti, are well-defined and rapid tests for each species are available. However, in co-endemic areas and situations, such as screening foreign workers from various endemic regions, a single rapid test that detects both species is needed. The Filariasis IgG4 Rapid Test (Reszon Diagnostics International, Selangor, Malaysia) is an improved version of the previous PanLF Rapid, which detects IgG4 antibodies against both LF species. The 'new' test may also be helpful for post-validation surveillance in W. …

OBJECTIVE: To explore the measures for continuing surveillance of filariasis.
METHODS: Selecting some vulnerable spots for focal surveillance, double-slide biood sampling for microfilaria examination, dissecting vectors for detecting the mosquitoes infected with filarial larva, using IFAT for detecting antifilarial antibody.
RESULTS: 27,938 persons were examined for microfilaria and 4,454 mosquitoes were dissected for filaria larva, all were negative. 3,606 serum samples were examined for antifilarial antibody average positive rate was 1.35%(0.39-4.97%).
CONCLUSION: The results of surveilla…

Filariases are infections caused by distinct species of nematodes. These infections are transmitted through insect bites and primarily affect lymph nodes and skin. Filariases are classified as neglected diseases and affect millions, producing severe disability and social stigma. This type of infection is rarely diagnosed in travellers, as prolonged stays in endemic areas are usually required acquire infection. Infections may be asymptomatic, and clinical manifestations depend on the host immune response to the infection and the parasite burden. Diagnosis is based on the demonstration of microf

Lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis are parasitic helminth diseases that constitute a serious public health issue in tropical regions. The filarial nematodes that cause these diseases are transmitted by blood-feeding insects and produce chronic and long-term infection through suppression of host immunity. Disease pathogenesis is linked to host inflammation invoked by the death of the parasite, causing hydrocoele, lymphoedema, and elephantiasis in lymphatic filariasis, and skin disease and blindness in onchocerciasis. Most filarial species that infect people co-exist in mutualistic symbiosi…

BACKGROUND: Mass treatment with albendazole co-administered with another antifilarial drug is part of a global programme to eliminate lymphatic filariasis. We sought reliable evidence of the effects of albendazole on the disease and the parasite.
OBJECTIVES: To summarize the effects of albendazole alone or in combination with antifilarial drugs for clinical treatment and community control of lymphatic filariasis.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Infectious Diseases Group Specialized Register (August 2005), CENTRAL (The Cochrane Library Issue 3, 2005), MEDLINE (1966 to August 2005), …

BACKGROUND: Mass treatment with albendazole, co-administered with another antifilarial drug, is being promoted as part of a global programme to eliminate lymphatic filariasis.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of albendazole on patients or populations with filarial infection, and on morbidity in patients with filarial infection; and to assess the frequency of adverse events for albendazole both given singly or in combination with another antifilarial drug (diethylcarbamazine or ivermectin).
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Infectious Disease Group's trial register (September 2003), …

Recent advances in the diagnosis, treatment, and pathophysiology of lymphatic filariasis have raised hopes for eradication. Development of an easy-to-use, rapid-format diagnostic tool has facilitated precise location of infectious zones thus allowing quick intervention. Two new drugs, i.e., ivermectin and albendazole, have been shown to be highly effective in the management of microfilariasis due to Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori thus greatly expanding a therapeutic arsenal once limited to diethylcarbamazine. The current eradication strategy is designed to break the cha…

The past and present distribution of Bancroftian filariasis in Brazil is reviewed. Parasitological and entomological surveys were conducted between 1951 and 1958, the autochthonous transmission of Wuchereria bancrofti having been found only in 11 places in the country as follows, with the corresponding prevalences; Ponta Grossa (SC), 14.5% Belém (PA), 9.8%; Barra de Laguna (SC), 9.4%; Recife (PE), 6.9%; Castro Alves (BA), 5.9%; Florianópolis (SC), 1.4%; São Luis (MA), 0.6%; Salvador (BA), 0.4%; Maceió (AL), 0.3%; Manaus (AM). 0.2% and Porto Alegre (RS), 0.1%.
