Characterization of firefighter exposures during fire overhaul.

Previous studies have characterized firefighter exposures during fire suppression. However, minimal information is available regarding firefighter exposures during overhaul, when firefighters look for hidden fire inside attics, ceilings, and walls, often without respiratory protection. A comprehensive air monitoring study was conducted to characterize City of Phoenix firefighter exposures during the overhaul phase of 25 structure fires. Personal samples were collected for aldehydes; benzene; toluene; ethyl benzene; xylene; hydrochloric acid; polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PNA); respirable

Changes in permeability of the alveolar-capillary barrier in firefighters.

The effect on alveolar-capillary barrier permeability of chronic exposure to a smoke produced by the partial combusion of diesel oil, paraffin, and wood was examined. An index of permeability was determined from the rate of transfer from the lung into the blood of the hydrophilic, labelled chelate 99mTc diethylene triamine penta-acetate (MW 492 dalton). The results of this test were expressed as the half time clearance of the tracer from the lung into the blood (T1/2 LB). The study was carried out at the Royal Naval Firefighting School, HMS Excellent. Permeability index was measured on seven n

Colorectal cancer stage at diagnosis in male Florida firefighters.

BACKGROUND: Firefighters display increased risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). The distribution for CRC stage at diagnosis among firefighters compared to other occupational groups is unknown. METHODS: Colorectal cancer cases from the Florida Cancer Data System cancer registry (2001-2014) for males ≥20 years were ascertained. Firefighters were identified through either direct linkage with Florida Fire Marshal's Office employment and certification records or Standard Occupation Codes annotated at diagnosis. White-collar, blue-collar, and service workers were also identified according to these code

Alcohol Use Severity, Anger and Drinking Motives among Firefighters.

Background: Firefighters represent an understudied population with high rates of hazardous alcohol use and alcohol use disorder. This population is also at an increased risk of mental health disorders and related symptoms such as anger. Anger is a relatively understudied negative mood state with clinical relevance to alcohol use among firefighters. Anger is associated with greater alcohol use and may spur more approach-motivated reasons for drinking compared to other negative emotions. Objectives: This study sought to examine: 1. whether anger significantly contributes to alcohol use severity

Posture Evaluation of Firefighters During Simulated Fire Suppression Tasks.

BACKGROUND: Posture mechanics during fire suppression tasks are associated with musculoskeletal injuries in firefighters. METHODS: This study uses the Ovako Working Posture Analyzing System (OWAS) ergonomics tool to describe and evaluate the postures of 48 firefighters during 3 simulated tasks: (a) hose drag, (b) hose pull, and (c) high-rise pack lift. Ergonomics intervention prioritizations based on the OWAS action classification (AC) scores were identified using Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. Chi-square analyses identified associations between firefighter characteristics and OWAS AC scores. F

Association between physical fitness and musculoskeletal health in firefighters.

Introduction: Firefighters are often placed in situations that require high levels of physical exertion, leading to significant strain on firefighters' musculoskeletal system, predisposing them to musculoskeletal discomfort (MSD) and/or musculoskeletal injury (MSI). Physical fitness programs are often recommended and justified, in part, to prevent injuries. The aim of this study was to determine the association between physical fitness and musculoskeletal health (MSH) in firefighters. Methods: A total of 308 full-time firefighters took part in the study conducted in Cape Town, South Africa. Ph

Characteristics and Predictors of Occupational Injury Among Career Firefighters.

The purpose of this study was to assess occupational injury characteristics and predictors among career firefighters. A total of 249 firefighters from central Texas and northern California participated in this Internet-based survey. Approximately 27% of firefighters had reported an occupational injury within the previous 12 months. The majority of injuries occurred on the scene of a non-fire call while performing an activity that required lifting, pushing, or pulling. Firefighters' backs were most frequently injured. Of the reported injuries, approximately 18% returned to work on modified duty

Ecological model of occupational stress. Application to urban firefighters.

1. Multiple individual and organizational barriers make it difficult for occupational health nurses and other providers to understand and handle stress in the workplace. 2. Recent research suggests adverse health effects resulting from occupational stress are more related to the context or conditions of work than workers' characteristics. 3. The ecological approach described in this article provides a means to examine the context in which stress occurs through an analysis of four levels of influence. The levels of influence include the microsystem, the organizational system, the peri-organizat

Race-specific cancer mortality in US firefighters: 1984-1993.

A mortality odds ratio (MOR) study of race-specific cancer risk among firefighters was conducted using 1984-1993 death certificate data from 24 states. The Bureau of the Census Index of Industries and Occupations was used to code occupation on death certificates. The overall cancer mortality was slightly elevated among white firefighters (MOR = 1.1; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.1-1.2), but the increase in overall cancer mortality among black firefighters was not significant (MOR = 1.2; 95% CI = 0.9-1.5). Only prostate cancer risk was elevated in both groups (whites: MOR = 1.2; 95% CI = 1.0

Firefighter Turnout Gear and Peri-Governmental Influences.

How do non-governmental standards matter for occupational and environmental health and safety? Internationally recognized standards specify requirements for structural firefighter personal protective equipment (PPE), but concerns have emerged about hazardous chemicals and firefighters' potential exposures. In this paper, we draw on the case of the National Fire Protection Association's standards for firefighter PPE to develop the concept of peri-governance, work done by non-governmental actors or organizations that exerts governance force through various mechanisms, including government entiti

Training Interventions and Firefighter Performance: A Systematic Review.

Firefighting requires high levels of aerobic fitness, muscular strength and endurance to perform demanding tasks under extreme conditions. Although previous research has focused mainly on general physical fitness, fewer studies have examined the impact of physical training interventions on task-specific performance. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of structured physical training programs in improving firefighters' occupational task performance. Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic literature search was conducted in October 2024 across PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Sci

Physiologic Responses to Simulated Shipboard Firefighting Tasks.

INTRODUCTION: Fire suppression can result in injury and death, with cardiac events being the leading cause of death of on-duty structural firefighters. Few data, however, are available regarding the physiologic responses to shipboard fires. Therefore, the purpose of this report was to determine physiologic responses of simulated shipboard firefighting tasks. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen subjects (age: 24 ± 5 y, V˙O2peak: 44.9 ± 7.2 mL · kg-1 · min-1) performed firefighting tasks in protective garments and breathing apparatus. After completing each task, heart rate (HR), core temperature (T

Decontamination of metals from firefighter turnout gear.

Firefighters are exposed to many different contaminants during structural fires. Moreover, if their protective gear is not successfully decontaminated, firefighters are at risk of being repeatedly exposed to contaminants from previous fires. Thus, the successful removal of contaminants from firefighter turnout gear is necessary to prevent or reduce repeated exposure risks. Laundering methods can reduce the probability of re-exposure to contaminants, such as heavy metals, thus reducing repeated exposure risks. In this study, the efficiencies of heavy metal removal from the firefighter turnout g
