Supramedullary neurons (SMNs) were described almost 150 years ago as large, unipolar cells whose somata are located on the dorsal aspect of the medulla oblongata and spinal cord in adults of teleost fishes. SMNs are either aligned in a single, median longitudinal row, generally extending over the rostral third of the spinal cord, or clustered over the medulla oblongata and rostral spinal cord. We add to the list of species that have SMNs and provide the first description of a novel distribution of SMNs along most of the spinal cord in the oyster toadfish (Opsanus tau) and sea raven (Hemitripte…

The evolution of independent lineages along replicated environmental transitions frequently results in convergent adaptation, yet the degree to which convergence is present across multiple levels of biological organization is often unclear. Additionally, inherent biases associated with shared ancestry and variation in selective regimes across geographic replicates often pose challenges for confidently identifying patterns of convergence. We investigated a system in which three species of poeciliid fishes sympatrically occur in a toxic spring rich in hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and an adjacent nonsu…

Brains are very plastic, both in response to phenotypic diversity and to larger evolutionary trends. Differences between taxa cannot be easily attributed to either factors. Comparative morphological data on higher taxonomic levels are scarce, especially in ray-finned fishes. Here we show the great diversity of brain areas of more than 150 species of ray-finned fishes by volumetric measurements using block-face imaging. We found that differences among families or orders are more likely due to environmental needs than to systematic position. Most notable changes are present in the brain areas pr…

Antarctic notothenioid fishes are the classic example of vertebrate adaptive radiation in a marine environment. Notothenioids diversified from a single common ancestor ∼22 Mya to between 120 and 140 species today, and they represent ∼90% of fish biomass on the continental shelf of Antarctica. As they diversified in the cold Southern Ocean, notothenioids evolved numerous traits, including osteopenia, anemia, cardiomegaly, dyslipidemia, and aglomerular kidneys, that are beneficial or tolerated in their environment but are pathological in humans. Thus, notothenioids are models for understanding a…

AIMS: To determine the occurrence, diversity, antibiotic resistance and biofilm formation of Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolated from marine fishes in Bangladesh.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 80 marine fishes were obtained from the local markets and examined for the presence of V. parahaemolyticus. All the isolated V. parahaemolyticus were characterized for the presence of virulence markers, thermostable direct hemolysin (TDH) or thermostable direct hemolysin related hemolysin (TRH). Isolates were serotyped and further characterized by enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequence …

The shapes of vertebrate teeth are often used as hallmarks of diet. Here, however, we demonstrate evidence of frequent piscivory by cartilaginous fishes with pebble-like teeth that are typically associated with durophagy, the eating of hard-shelled prey. High-resolution micro-computed tomography observation of a jaw specimen from one batoid species and visual investigation of those of two additional species reveal large numbers of embedded stingray spines, arguing that stingray predation of a scale rivalling that of the largest carnivorous sharks may not be uncommon for large, predatory batoid…

The cerebellum is well developed in cartilaginous fishes, with the same cell types (barring basket cells) and organizational features found in other vertebrate groups, including mammals. In particular, the lattice-like organization of cerebellar cortex (with a molecular layer of parallel fibers, interneurons, spiny Purkinje cell dendrites, and climbing fibers) is a defining characteristic. In addition to the cerebellum, cartilaginous fishes have cerebellum-like structures in the dorsolateral wall of the hindbrain. These structures are adjacent to and, in part, contiguous with the cerebellum. T…

Chimaera (Holocephali) are cartilaginous fishes with flexible operculi rather than external gill slits, suggesting ventilation occurs in a manner different from other fishes. We examined holocephalan ventilation morphology, behavior, and performance by anatomical investigations, high-speed video, and in vivo pressure measurements from the buccal and parabranchial cranial cavities in Hydrolagus colliei and Callorhinchus callorynchus. Ventilatory modes ranged from quiet resting breathing to rapid "active" breathing, yet external cranial movements-excepting the passive movement of the opercular f…

In the decades since the Minamata tragedy in Japan, there has been a considerable body of research performed on effects of methylmercury in fishes. The studies have revealed that some of the most sensitive responses seen in fishes are reminiscent of the symptoms experienced by the Minamata victims. This article reviews the literature, with a focus on mercury's effects on fish reproduction (hormone levels, gametogenesis, fertilization success), embryonic development (morphological abnormalities, rate), the development of behavior, and neurobehavioral effects in adults. Both experimental exposur…

Thyroid proliferative lesions are rather common in bony fishes but disagreement exists in the fish pathology community concerning diagnostic criteria for hyperplastic versus neoplastic lesions. To simplify the diagnosis of proliferative thyroid lesions and to reduce confusion regarding lesion interpretation, we propose specific criteria for distinguishing hyperplastic from neoplastic lesions. Development of these criteria was based on the examination of a large series of proliferative lesions from Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes), lesions from other small fish species, and a reexamination of …

Western Atlantic sciaenids comprise a taxonomically diverse teleost family with significant variations in the relationship between the swim bladder and the otic capsule. In this study, the auditory brainstem response (ABR) was used to test the hypothesis that fishes with different peripheral auditory structures (black drum, Pogonias chromis and Atlantic croaker, Micropogonias undulatus) show differences in frequency selectivity. In a black drum the swim bladder is relatively distant from the otic capsule while the swim bladder in Atlantic croaker possesses anteriorly-directed diverticulas that…

The spinal cord of two tetraodontiform fishes, the Japanese file fish (Navodon modestus) and the panther puffer (Takifugu pardalis), are unusual among vertebrates in having a markedly abbreviated spinal cord with a long and flattened filum terminale. Only the rostral short part of the cord of both species is cylindrical; the greater part of the cord is markedly flat. The majority of the spinal nerve roots leave the short cylindrical part. The flattened part of the cord contains the central canal, myelinated nerve fibers, and a few motoneurons surrounding the cauda equina, and it is histologica…

Absorption of lipid in the different regions of the intestine of two teleost fishes has been studied histochemically at different time intervals of 4, 10 and 20 h. All the three portions of the intestine have the absorptive capacity. However, it varies from one region to another. The lipid has been absorbed in the form of lipoid particles and lipoid goblets. It is also recorded here that some lipoid droplets are absorbed by pinocytosis across the brush border membrane. The lipid absorbed was localized in the brush border cells, in intercellular spaces of connective tissue, in submucosa, in bet…

Climate change is widely expected to push many taxa beyond their biological limits, yet some populations persist in environments that routin … . Combined, our findings support thermal generalism as the primary driver of tolerance in estuarine fishes to climatic extremes, with important implications for the fisheries they support under climate change.

One out of every two vertebrate species is a ray-finned fish (Actinopterygii). The ~380-million-year fossil record of ray-finned fishes provides a window into the evolutionary history of actinopterygian diversity in deep time. The actinopterygian fossil record shows that the ray-finned fish crown group (Actinopterygii) lived alongside speciose members of now extinct lineages, collectively referred to as early actinopterygians. I review the evolutionary history of early actinopterygians through deep time, including morphology, taxonomy, phylogeny, and the fossil record itself, to form a foundat…

The increasing prevalence of artificial light at night (ALAN) is of growing ecological concern. By altering natural light regimes, ALAN affects the behaviour, physiology and life-history of organisms. While research has largely focused on terrestrial ecosystems, aquatic ecosystems are increasingly exposed. Here, we systematically review current knowledge of the impacts of ALAN on fishes and the underlying mechanisms and ecological consequences. We first discuss the factors influencing fish exposure to ALAN and how light can exert both direct and indirect effects. We then examine the potential …

The evolution of jaws is hypothesized to have fueled radiations among vertebrates, contributing to their overwhelming success in the present day. Past work shows rapid early expansion of diversity in jaw structure in many lineages; however, the evolutionary dynamics underlying this pattern are unclear and hindered by the lack of a robust comparative framework. Here, using a macroevolutionary approach, we explore the diversification of lower jaws in early bony fishes, a major contributor to this initial radiation. Using newly generated three-dimensional mandibular shape data from 86 species, we…

Colours and associated patterns are probably some of the most obvious phenotypic traits in animals and reef teleost fishes are often cited as a textbook example for illustrating this type of diversity. Even if it is well established that colour patterns play a central role in the ecology and evolution of reef fishes, we still lack the necessary toolkits to fully grasp the mechanisms driving the diversification of this obvious phenotypic trait. On the one hand, genotyping power seems now limitless thanks to current DNA sequencing technologies. Today, entire genomes of fishes can be easily produ…
