Health effects of flooding in rural Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: There is little information available on nontraumatic health risks as the result of floods, and on the factors that determine vulnerability to them (especially in low-income settings). We estimated the pattern of mortality, diarrhea, and acute respiratory infection following the 2004 floods in rural Bangladesh. METHODS: We conducted controlled interrupted time-series analysis of adverse health outcomes, from 2001 to 2007, in a cohort of 211,000 residents of the Matlab region classified as flooded or nonflooded in 2004. Ratios of mortality, diarrhea, and acute respiratory infection…

How Governance Failures Drive Recurrent Flood Disasters in Pakistan: A Diagnostic Policy Analysis of the 2025 Flood.

Climate disasters are increasingly understood not as natural phenomena alone but as outcomes shaped by governance systems and institutional capacities. While existing scholarship has documented flood impacts and theorized governance deficits, few studies have traced the precise causal pathways through which institutional pathologies-fragmentation, spatial mismatch, and perverse incentives-produce recurrent disaster outcomes. This study addresses this gap by diagnosing the systemic governance failures that amplified the 2025 floods. Employing a Diagnostic Policy Analysis Framework for Recurrent…

Action Mechanism, Research Progress and Development Trend of High-Temperature Steam Flooding and Profile Control/Flooding Systems.

Offshore high-temperature steam flooding suffers severe steam channeling, uneven steam intake and low thermal efficiency, while conventional profile control agents fail to adapt to coupled harsh environments of 200-350 °C high temperature, ultra-high salinity and continuous steam shear. Existing reviews mainly focus on onshore thermal reservoirs or single foam/gel materials, lacking a targeted, gel-oriented systematic review matching unique offshore platform constraints. Guided by the integrated framework of "flow control-diversion-enhanced sweep efficiency", this work establishes a six-dimens

Enhancement of coastal flood mitigation by implementing hybrid flood defences integrating hard engineering and nature-based solutions.

Due to the energy dissipation induced by vegetation, restoration of natural ecosystems such as salt marshes is often considered an attractive nature-based solution against coastal flooding as an alternative to hard engineered defences. Even though this vegetation's capacity to dissipate energy has been well affirmed in the literature for short waves, it is still disputed for long waves (i.e., storm surges and tides) resulting in significant uncertainty on the potential effectiveness of mitigating the impact of storm surges. Furthermore, restoration or creation of coastal habitats often face ch

COPD prescription patterns after the 2018 Japan floods: analysis of national data.

Climate change has led to an increase in flood disasters worldwide, raising concerns about their potential impact on respiratory health. This study investigated the impact of the 2018 Japan Floods, one of the largest flood disasters in Japan's history, on prescription rates for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). To examine the impact of the disaster on COPD-related prescriptions, we analysed anonymised health insurance claims data from the Japanese National Database. The study focused on residents of three prefectures that included the most severely affected areas during the 2018 Ja…

Hurricanes and turbulent floods threaten arsenic-contaminated coastal soils and vulnerable communities.

Coastal environments, particularly those adjacent to Superfund sites, are at increased risk of contaminant release during natural disasters, posing serious threats to nearby communities. To investigate this issue, we employed an advanced laboratory flood simulator to impose arsenic-contaminated sediments to turbulent flooding events. We further monitored changes in arsenic collocation and solid-phase speciation using advanced synchrotron radiation-based techniques to understand the impacts of flooding on arsenic mobility. Our results demonstrate that turbulent conditions significantly enhance

Large floods drive changes in cause-specific mortality in the United States.

Flooding greatly endangers public health and is an urgent concern as rapid population growth in flood-prone regions and more extreme weather events will increase the number of people at risk. However, an exhaustive analysis of mortality following floods has not been conducted. Here we used 35.6 million complete death records over 18 years (2001-2018) from the National Center for Health Statistics in the United States, highly resolved flood exposure data and a Bayesian conditional quasi-Poisson model to estimate the association of flooding with monthly county-level death rates for cancers, card…

Global, regional and national trends and impacts of natural floods, 1990-2022.

OBJECTIVE: To assess global, regional and national trends in the impact of floods from 1990 to 2022 and determine factors influencing flood-related deaths. METHODS: We used data on flood disasters from the International Disaster Database for 1990-2022 from 168 countries. We calculated the annual percentage change to estimate trends in the rates of people affected and killed by floods by study period, World Health Organization (WHO) region, country income level and flood type. We used multivariable logistic regression analysis to assess the factors associated with death from floods. FINDINGS:…

Facilitating Community Risk Communication for Wide-Area Evacuation during Large-Scale Floods.

Large-scale floods have been occurring more frequently in Japan as a result of current global weather anomalies, yet evacuation procedures face several issues. These include low evacuation rates of citizens, wide-area evacuation by car, and residents who cannot evacuate on their own. For example, in the Kofu Basin, Yamanashi Prefecture, due to the size of the potential inundation area and a population that exceeds 300,000 people spread across 10 municipalities, a large number of residents would have to evacuate across municipal boundaries by car. The author proposed and applied a risk communic…

Monitoring the effects of floods on submerged macrophytes in a large river.

The lower Ebro River (Catalonia, Spain) has recently undergone a regime shift from a phytoplankton to a macrophyte-dominated system. Macrophytes started to spread at the end of the 1990s and since 2002 artificial floods (flushing flows) of short duration (1-2 days) are released from the Riba-roja dam once or twice a year in order to reduce macrophyte density. The aim of this study was to analyse the spatiotemporal trends of the submerged macrophytes in two stretches of the lower Ebro River using high-resolution hydroacoustic methods, in order to elucidate the effects of artificial floods and n…

Factors determining vulnerability to diarrhoea during and after severe floods in Bangladesh.

This paper identifies groups vulnerable to the effect of flooding on hospital visits due to diarrhoea during and after a flood event in 1998 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The number of observed cases of cholera and non-cholera diarrhoea per week was compared to expected normal numbers during the flood and post-flood periods, obtained as the season-specific average over the two preceding and subsequent years using Poisson generalised linear models. The expected number of diarrhoea cases was estimated in separate models for each category of potential modifying factors: sex, age, socio-economic status an

Flooding, Sociospatial Risk, and Population Health.

Climate change and population settlement patterns are altering the severity and spatial dimensions of flooding. Despite associational evidence linking flood exposure to population health in the United States, few studies have used counterfactual strategies to address confounding or examined how sociospatial determinations of risk, such as floodplain delineation, affect well-being. Using the case of Hurricane Harvey, I leverage novel, repeated cross-sectional health survey data from Houston immediately predisaster (N = 2,540) and six to nine months postdisaster (N = 2,798), linked to local floo

Flood exposure and poverty in 188 countries.

Flooding is among the most prevalent natural hazards, with particularly disastrous impacts in low-income countries. This study presents global estimates of the number of people exposed to high flood risks in interaction with poverty. It finds that 1.81 billion people (23% of world population) are directly exposed to 1-in-100-year floods. Of these, 1.24 billion are located in South and East Asia, where China (395 million) and India (390 million) account for over one-third of global exposure. Low- and middle-income countries are home to 89% of the world's flood-exposed people. Of the 170 million…
