Comparison of fluoride concentrations in unstimulated whole saliva following the use of a fluoride dentifrice and a fluoride rinse.

Recent evidence has suggested that the cariostatic effects of topical fluoride (F) are related to the presence of low concentrations of ionic F in the oral environment. The purpose of this study was to compare the retention of F in the oral environment over 24-hour periods after the use of a F dentifrice or a F rinse. Groups of ten consenting adult subjects (age 18-52 years) brushed and/or rinsed (B/R) in a standardized manner twice per day in the morning (AM) and before bed (PM) with either a placebo dentifrice (8 ppm F), NaF dentifrice (1100 ppm F), or NaF rinse (225 ppm F). Experiments were

Fluoride release potential of arginine-incorporated fluoride varnishes.

The study aimed to examine the fluoride (F) release potential of arginine (Arg)-incorporated F varnishes. Four commercially available F varnishes were included in the study: Duraphat® (5% NaF), Flúor Protector® (0.9% SiH2F2), Fluor Protector S® (NH4F), and Fluorimax™ (2.5% NaF). L-arginine (2% w/v.) was incorporated in these varnishes to estimate F release at 1 h, 4 h, 6 h, 24 h, 3 days, and 7 days using an F-ion selective electrode. The media pH of eluded varnishes was estimated and primary inorganic F extraction was performed. The main effects pH, F release, and computed integrated mean/cumu

A Scopus-Based Bibliometric Analysis of Global Research Contributions on Milk Fluoridation.

Fluoridated-milk schemes have been developed and implemented in many countries to prevent dental caries. This study aimed to evaluate the impact/influence of scientific publications, researchers, and institutions conducting research on milk fluoridation; to explore the international and inter-institutional collaboration and illustrate scientific output trends; and to pinpoint research hotspots in milk fluoridation research. This bibliometric analysis of original research articles on milk fluoridation includes all of the original articles published in peer-reviewed journals systematically extra…

Water fluoridation, dentition status and bone health of older people in Ireland.

OBJECTIVE: To examine some of the potential benefits and risks of water fluoridation for older adults. METHODS: This study used 'The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing', to access a nationally representative sample of 4977 people aged 50 and older. The sample was used to estimate associations between the percentage of households in a respondent's local area with a currently fluoridated water supply and the probability of two binary outcomes: the respondent having all their own teeth and having normal bone density. Past exposure of individuals to fluoridated water was not assessed; the prevale…

Seasonal variation in fluoride intake: the Iowa fluoride study.

OBJECTIVES: Although patterns of fluid intake change seasonally, little is known about how fluoride intake varies by season. Since even short-term increases in fluoride intake could potentially lead to more dental fluorosis, it is valuable to assess the degree of seasonal variation to determine if it increases fluoride intake to levels that could be considered a concern in young children. METHODS: Questionnaires were mailed periodically to participants in the Iowa Fluoride Study beginning at 6 weeks of age and continuing for a number of years. Parents recorded the date; child's weight; estima

Root caries in an optimally fluoridated and a high-fluoride community.

The purpose of this study was to measure the prevalence and distribution of root caries in two New Mexico communities. One community, Deming, had a natural fluoride concentration of 0.7 mg/L in its drinking water, optimum for its climate. The other, Lordsburg, was naturally fluoridated at 3.5 mg/L, five times the optimum. Dental examinations were carried out on 151 adults in Deming (mean age, 39.8 years) and 164 in Lordsburg (mean age, 43.2 years); only persons born in the communities were included. Prevalence of root caries was 23.8% in Deming and 7.3% in Lordsburg; mean number of lesions was

Fluoride and osteoporosis.

After a review of the historical background and the first studies with fluoride therapy for osteoporosis the author presents his own studies of more than 100 cases of industrial fluorosis. It is followed by instructions how to perform the fluoride therapy: indications, contra-indications, dosage, controls and additional therapy. Since 1969 we treated 158 patients suffering from primary and secondary osteoporosis with 3 different sodium fluoride preparations (pure sodium fluoride powder, Ossin, Koreberon). Clinically and subjectively, 80.4% recovered or became symptom-free. In 53.8% (with Koreb

Fluoride intake from fluids and urinary fluoride excretion by young children in Kuwait: a non-fluoridated community.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the pattern of fluid consumption, fluoride intake from the fluids and urinary fluoride excretion by children aged 1-9 years in Kuwait, a nonfluoridated community. METHODS: Using the cluster sampling technique, children aged 1-9 years were chosen from 2000 randomly selected households in Kuwait. Questionnaires were then administered to their mothers to determine the children's daily fluid intake. Fluoride concentrations in tap water as well as all brands of bottled water and beverages consumed by the children were measured, using the fluoride ion-specific electrode. Fl

Comparative uptake of fluoride from sodium fluoride, ammonium fluoride, and barium fluoride in rat teeth when predominantly administered in the pre-eruptive stage of development.

A comparative study was undertaken which focused on the systemic uptake of sodium fluoride (NaF), ammonium fluoride (NH4F), and barium fluoride (BaF2) in rat pups. Two critical achievements made this comparative study possible: (a) the demonstration of significant increases in fluoride (F) uptake-deposition in the treatment group pups relative to control group rats as a result of stomach tube feeding; and (b) the demonstration of clear-cut differences in F concentration levels between the treatment groups as a result of this stomach tube-systemic uptake. Data were reliable and significant enou

Fear of fluoride.

Discusses how dental and medical scares have resulted in a "culture of fear" which has damaged patients and dentists. Forty years of pessimism have created a demoralised and risk-averse society. The reality of a steadily improving world demands a new attitude of rational optimism and a healthy scepticism about new scares.

[Fluoride toxicity].

Many years have passed since domestic water fluoridation was adopted to reduce the incidence of caries in developed countries; however, since there is an additional dose of fluorides ingested with foods and drinks prepared with such waters, the problem has emerged of possible adverse effects on health associated to them, so that in some countries fluorine integrator selling is allowed only with preventive medical prescription. Owing to the affinity for calcifited tissues, fluorine has a powerful effect on bone cellular order (mediated by growth factors' upregulation system IGF-2, TGF-beta, PDG…

The CATFISH study: An evaluation of a water fluoridation program in Cumbria, UK.

OBJECTIVES: The objective was to assess the effectiveness of a Water Fluoridation program on a contemporary population of children. METHODS: The study used a longitudinal prospective cohort design. In Cumbria, England, two groups of children were recruited and observed over a period of 5-6 years. The Birth Cohort consisted of families recruited from two hospitals in Cumbria where children were conceived after water fluoridation was reintroduced. The systemic and topical effects of community water fluoridation were evaluated in the Birth Cohort. The Older Cohort were approximately 5 years old …
