A sustainable approach for fluoride treatment using coconut fiber cellulose as an adsorbent.

In developing countries like India, an economically viable and ecologically approachable strategy is required to safeguard the drinking water. Excessive fluoride intake through drinking water can lead to dental fluorosis, skeletal fluorosis, or both. The present study has been under with an objective to investigate the feasibility of using cellulose derived from coconut fiber as an adsorbent under varying pH conditions for fluoride elimination from water. The assessment of equilibrium concentration of metal ions using adsorption isotherms is an integral part of the study. This present finding

Silver diamine fluoride for non-operative restorative treatment and prevention of dental caries.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is a multifactorial, dynamic disease leading to the demineralization and loss of tooth structure. Traditionally, it is treated with mechanical removal of the carious tooth structure and restoration with a restorative material, requiring specialized skills and equipment. Young children, patients with physical or intellectual disabilities, elderly patients, and patients living in remote communities are disproportionately affected because of greater difficulty accessing and undergoing operative dental procedures. The purpose of this narrative review is to explore the use

Examining the association between untreated caries in children and parent fluoride treatment refusal.

BACKGROUND: In this case-control study, the authors examined the relationship between untreated caries in children and parent fluoride treatment refusal. The authors hypothesized that parents of children with a history of untreated caries would be less likely to refuse topical fluoride for their children than parents of children with no history of untreated caries. METHODS: The study included children (≤ 18 years old) who were patients at a university dental clinic from January 2016 through June 2020. Children whose parents refused fluoride treatment were age-matched with children whose paren…

Conservative Otosclerosis Treatment With Sodium Fluoride and Other Modern Formulations: A Systematic Review.

Otosclerosis, also known as otospongiosis, is a primary osteodystrophy of the otic capsule of the inner ear and one of the leading causes of deafness in adults. The rationale for medical therapy for otospongiosis is to slow down and eventually stop the phase of bone resorption. Conservative treatments include sodium fluoride (NaF), bisphosphonates, and other modern medicines. A systematic review of the existing and published articles and books until April 2021 has been conducted in Medscape, Google Scholar, PubMed, and other databases using appropriate terms. According to the results of the re

Lanthanum-modified shale powder/alginate composite hydrogel beads for fluoride-contaminated groundwater treatment.

Excessive fluoride (F-) in groundwater poses a serious threat to human health, necessitating the development of efficient defluorination materials. In this study, a novel composite hydrogel bead (La-SP/SA) was fabricated by incorporating shale powder (SP) into sodium alginate (SA) matrix followed by crosslinking with lanthanum chloride. The synthesis conditions were determined as SP dosage 4.0%, La3+ concentration 0.2 mol L-1, and crosslinking time 12 h. Under adsorbent dosage of 0.7 g L-1, initial F- concentration of 9.0 mg L-1, and pH of 5.0, La-SP/SA achieved an excellent removal efficiency

Effects of topical fluoride on primary tooth enamel microhardness after diode laser treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Tooth decay is controlled and prevented using fluorides. Specifically, a combination of laser irradiation and topical fluoride application can improve fluoride absorption. Although laser irradiation is recommended in traditional technology for caries prevention, little is known about the efficacy of caries-inhibiting laser diodes. Further, most studies have focused on permanent teeth. The objective of this study was to explore the effect of laser diode radiation mixed with topical fluoride on the enamel surface microhardness of primary teeth. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The 60 primary te

Oral Hygiene Index in Early Childhood Caries, Before and After Topical Fluoride Treatment.

BACKGROUND: Circular caries occurs in the earliest age of the children (1 - 1.5 year), immediately after the eruption of the deciduous teeth. During this period, children are too young to be able to properly implement oral hygiene. Consequently, it is at a negligible level, with plenty of soft plaque on the deciduous tooth surfaces. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this clinical trial was to determine the correlation between oral hygiene shown with Oral Hygiene index, and the initial stages of circular caries (initial lesion and superficial form), before and after topical fluoride treatment. …

3D printing of a controlled fluoride delivery device for the prevention and treatment of tooth decay.

Dental decay is a highly prevalent chronic disease affecting people from all ages. Clinically, fluoride supplementation is the primary strategy in the prevention of dental decay. However, the current existing self-application formulations such as gels or mouthwashes are rapidly cleared after administration, resulting in modest efficacy even after repeated applications. Therefore, a user-friendly formulation that can provide sustained fluoride release in the oral cavity is of great interest for dental decay prevention. Herein, we report the utilization of fused deposition modelling to fabricate

Assessing the Effects and Acceptance of Silver Diamine Fluoride Treatment in Early Childhood Caries.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries (ECC) is a widespread dental problem that impacts children below the age of six years. Traditional restorative treatments like fillings are often challenging and invasive for young children. Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) offers a minimally invasive and cost-effective alternative for managing ECC. However, the effects, acceptance, and understanding of this treatment by parents remain crucial for its successful implementation. AIM: To evaluate the impact and level of acceptance of SDF treatment in ECC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two children from an Anganw

Effect of root surface treatment with propolis and fluoride in delayed tooth replantation in rats.

Replantation is an acceptable option for treatment of an avulsed permanent tooth. Nevertheless, an extended extraoral period damages the periodontal ligament and results in external root resorption. The purpose of this study was to assess by histologic and histometric analysis, the influence of propolis 15% (natural resinous substance collected by Apis mellifera bees from various plants) and the fluoride solution used as root surface treatment on the healing process after delayed tooth replantation. Thirty Wistar (Rattus norvegicus albinus) rats were submitted to extraction of their upper righ

Detection of apoptotic changes in HeLa cells after treatment with paracetamol and sodium fluoride.

Apoptosis is genetically programmed cell death, an irreversible process of cell senescence with characteristic features (cell shrinkage, chromatin condensation, DNA fragmentation, apoptotic bodies) different from necrosis. Several effective in vitro methods for qualitative and quantitative detection of apoptotic events have been developed. Chromatin degradation, reductions in cell volume and other apoptosis-associated changes in cell morphology and physiology can be quickly analysed by multiparametric flow cytometry (FC) using small numbers of intact cells. One further method used for morpholo

Formation of CaHPO4-2H2O in tooth enamel as an intermediate product in topical fluoride treatments.

Significant amounts of CaHPO4-2H2O (DCPD) were deposited in tooth enamel by pretreatment with a solution saturated with respect to DCPD. When these enamel samples were treated with a given fluoride solution, the fluoride uptake increased with increasing amounts of DCPD produced by the pretreatment. The interactions between enamel and acidic solutions to yield DCPD can be understood as dissolution-precipitation reactions and analyzed through the use of solubility phase diagrams.

Fluoride in Dental Caries Prevention and Treatment: Mechanisms, Clinical Evidence, and Public Health Perspectives.

Background: Dental caries remains one of the most prevalent chronic diseases worldwide. Fluoride has long been recognized as a cornerstone of caries prevention through enamel remineralization, inhibition of demineralization, and antibacterial activity. However, controversies persist regarding systemic exposure, potential health risks, and ethical debates over community water fluoridation. Previous reviews often focused on isolated interventions, whereas a critical synthesis of mechanisms, clinical efficacy, safety, and public health perspectives is still lacking. Methods: This narrative review
