A 2-year-old girl presented with gonadotrophin-independent precocious puberty due to ovarian follicles. Central precocious puberty was excluded by several GnRH-tests and overnight LH sampling. There were no signs of McCune-Albright syndrome. An ovarian tumour was excluded by laparotomy and biopsies. BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of ovarian torsion is mandatory to avoid common complications. Sonography is the imaging modality of choice, but diagnosis is still a challenge.
OBJECTIVE: To report an additional sonographic feature of ovarian torsion in order to improve diagnostic accuracy.

A 34-year-old female, six months after surgery for implanting a mitral valve bioprosthesis (Hancock), was admitted to hospital because of acute abdomen. The patient had been on coumarin medication since the operation. On the 15th day of her menstrual cycle the patient presented gingival bleeding, epistaxis, and pain in the left lower abdominal quadrant. The prothrombin time was overdepressed (10% of normal), and coumarin drugs were stopped. Bleeding from the left ovary at time of ovulation was suspected and the patient was treated with vitamin K and then submitted to an exploratory laparotomy.

In the study, the gene expression of several heat shock proteins (HSPs) was determined in normal follicles and cystic follicles from cattle. A lower expression of HSP10 and HSP40 was observed in granulosa and theca cells of cysts compared to normal follicles. HSP27 was significantly less expressed in granulosa cells in cystic and large antral follicles than in other follicular categories. HSP60 and HSP90a expressions were highest in theca cells of cysts. However, HSP70 and HSP90b exhibited a lower expression in cysts than in healthy follicles.
