The foot abduction characteristics following Steenbeek foot abduction brace.

PURPOSE: We prospectively investigated the foot abduction characteristics following Steenbeek foot abduction brace (SFAB) use in corrected clubfeet. The foot abduction achievable in SFAB with knee flexion and extension was calculated to find the effectiveness and stretch exerted by it. METHODS: Only children with corrected idiopathic clubfeet using SFAB for greater than 3 months were enrolled. The foot abduction with and without brace in knee extended and flexed positions was measured. Hip range of motion (ROM) with and without brace was also recorded. RESULTS: The average age of 42 children…

Foot morphology and foot/ankle injury in indoor football.

While the pronated foot is implicated as a risk factor for sports injury in some studies, others suggest that a supinated foot posture increases the risk of overuse lower limb injuries. Athletes in a given sports discipline may tend to have a similar foot morphology, which varies from that observed elsewhere. Further, the foot morphology that is beneficial for performance in a sport may be detrimental with regard to injury. Intra- and inter-rater reliability of the Foot Posture Index (FPI-6) as a measure of foot morphology was determined (ICC (2,1) 0.88 and 0.69 respectively). Thereafter, in a…

The effect of additional activation of the plantar intrinsic foot muscles on foot kinematics in flat-footed subjects.

BACKGROUND: Strengthening exercises of the plantar intrinsic foot muscles (PIFMs) are often prescribed to flat-footed subjects because of the capacity of the PIFMs to support the medial longitudinal arch (MLA). However, it is unclear whether the capacity of the PIFMs to support the MLA is enough to change the foot kinematics in flat-footed subjects. To confirm this, the current study examined changes in foot kinematics in flat-footed subjects during standing and gait accompanied by changes in the activity of the PIFMs. METHODS: Eighteen flat-footed subjects were randomly assigned to an electr…

Comprehensive analysis of energy storing prosthetic feet: Flex Foot and Seattle Foot Versus Standard SACH foot.

This study compared the mechanical and biomechanical functions, metabolic demand, and shock absorption of two dynamic elastic response (DER) prosthetic foot designs with the SACH foot. Nine individuals who had undergone unilateral below knee amputation were studied. Mechanical properties of the feet were related to gait biomechanics. Forefoot compliance is greatest for the Flex Foot and least for the SACH foot, hence, Flex Foot demonstrates (1) the longest midstance phase, (2) the greatest ankle angle range, and (3) greater forward movement of the center of pressure. There was some evidence th…

[Cavovarus foot].

The cavovarus foot (CF) is a complex three-dimensional foot deformity. In addition to primary forms, secondary forms can be distinguished. The diagnosis of CF is made clinically; however, anamnestic information, a targeted examination including neurological status and at least radiological imaging using the hindfoot-centered imaging technique are required to determine the treatment. Conservative treatment for CF consists of the provision of insoles up to the adaptation of an orthopedic custom-made shoe, depending on the severity of the deformity. The indications for a surgical procedure are pr…

Mycetoma foot.

Mycetoma is an uncommon chronic granulomatous infective disease of the skin, dermis and subcutaneous tissues predominantly seen in tropical countries. A patient presented to our hospital with the swelling of the left foot with a healed sinus and a painful nodule. He gave a history of sinuses in the left foot from which there was discharge of yellow granules. Culture of the ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration cytology of the nodule revealed growths of Nocardia species. The patient was treated with a multi-drug therapy along with debridement of the painful nodule. He experienced symptomatic…

Foot infections.

Infections of the foot are very variable, some being complex in nature, causing pain, morbidity, and even mortality. In patients with diabetes mellitus, foot infections are common, ranging from chronic bacterial or fungal infections to serious limb-threatening ones. To manage infections, a sound knowledge of anatomy is essential. This article reviews the problems with respect to recent evidence and provides pathways to management and suggestions of changes with potential to wound healing.

Mirror foot.

Mirror image polydactyly is a rare congenital abnormality that may occur in isolation, or in association with multiple congenital anomalies. A case of unilateral mirror foot with an ipsilateral short, broad tibia is described. The clinical, radiologic, and operative findings are presented, and current theories of embryo-pathogenesis are reviewed.

Charcot Foot.

Charcot foot in its original sense is equivalent to stage 4 of hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN) which is known as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease since 1886. This entity, which can be subdivided into 3 groups including subgroups, predominantly begins during childhood and progresses slowly. The first symptom, often unnoticed by the patient for a long period, is weakness of the intrinsic foot muscles with consecutive hammer-toe formation and mobile pes cavus. Progredient atrophy of the peroneal, extensor, tibialis posterior and finally triceps surae muscles leads to fixed pes cavus var…

Charcot's foot.

Diabetic osteoarthropathy is a chronic progressive arthropathy involving the bones and joints being constantly associated to somatic and autonomic peripheral neuropathy. The pathogenesis is related to sensory and motor neuropathy with morphologic foot alterations, relaxation and abnormal position on walking till complete collapse of the foot shown by the depressed longitudinal medial arch. Bone reabsorption due to osteoclasis and increased blood flow until osteomalacia appears, is characteristic of this arthropathy. The clinical features vary according to the location and severity of articular…
