Compensatory hypertrophy of bone following surgery on the foot.

Compensatory hypertrophy of bone developed in 5 patients following surgery on the foot. The typical finding of diffuse cortical thickening of the entire ray is thought to represent a static compensatory response which occurs when the usual dynamic response of altered weight-bearing is inadequate or overridden.

Isolated Osseous Rosai Dorfman Disease of Foot Bones. Report of a Patient Misdiagnosed and Treated as Chronic Osteomyelitis.

Isolated osseous involvement without lymphadenopathy is a rare manifestation of Rosai-Dorfman disease. It clinically and radiologically mimics infections and primary bone tumors. The present report describes a 9-year-old girl with multifocal monomelic osseous involvement as an isolated manifestation. She presented with lytic lesions in the left proximal phalanx of the great toe and head of the second metatarsal unaccompanied by disease elsewhere. She was treated outside as chronic osteomyelitis. After 9 months, the swelling recurred, and a repeat biopsy was suggestive of Rosai-Dorfman disease.

Adult Flat Foot With Multiple Accessory Navicular Bones Treated Surgically: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Multiple accessory navicular bones is an extremely rare condition. To the best of our knowledge, only 8 cases in 2 imaging studies have been published. We report a case of a patient with flat foot with 2 accessory navicular bones. This patient needed to be treated surgically, and the surgery was successful, with short-term follow-up. We believe this is the first case of multiple accessory navicular bones to be treated surgically in English literature. The incidence of multiple accessory navicular bones might be higher. There is a risk to remaining ossicles without resection or fixation during

Comparative Analysis of Bone Resection Versus Bone Curettage in Diabetic Foot Osteomyelitis.

This study aims to describe the healing times of patients who underwent bone resection compared to bone curettage for managing diabetic foot osteomyelitis and to compare short- and long-term complications. This analytical retrospective observational cohort study collected clinical records of patients from a specialized diabetic foot clinic who underwent resection or bone curettage between January 2017 and January 2022. After surgery, a 1-year follow-up was conducted to record healing times and short- and long-term complications. The study included thirty-one patients, with 19 (61.29%) undergoi

Green Bone: Minocycline-Induced Discoloration of Bone Rarely Reported in Foot and Ankle.

The tetracycline antibiotics incorporate into bone similar to bisphosphonates. Tetracycline stains bone a fluorescent yellow and minocycline, more commonly used for chronic acne, stains bone dark green. Owing to its frequent use, the occurrence of green bone discoloration due to antibiotics in the tetracycline class is well understood. Its pigmentation can be seen through delicate, thin tissue as a dark blue-gray. Histologic inspection of this bone will confirm a benign condition without evidence of bone disease. Although yellow and green discoloration has been documented frequently in associa

Effect of Obesity on Bone Healing After Foot and Ankle Long Bone Fractures.

As obesity has become more common, fractures in the obese population have become more frequent. Concern exists regarding alterations in bone health and healing in obese patients. A matched case-control study was performed at 1 institution to evaluate whether an association exists between nonunion and a high body mass index in metatarsal and ankle fractures. A total of 48 patients with nonunion were identified, and control patients matched 2 to 1 (n = 96) were selected. The control patients were matched for age, sex, and fracture type. No association was identified between nonunion and the cont

Bone and soft tissue infections in patients with diabetic foot.

Bone and soft tissue infection involving the foot is a serious complication of diabetes mellitus and represents a major public health and socioeconomic burden to National Health Services worldwide. Research in the past decade has improved diagnosis and treatment of these frequent and potentially devastating complications of diabetic foot which often remain difficult to be diagnosed and treated despite the availability of various clinical, serological, and imaging modalities. Furthermore, neuropathic osteoarthropathy can share many clinical and imaging features of osteomyelitis, and infection i

Aneurysmal bone cyst and giant cell tumor of the foot.

From 1950 to 1994, 257 cases of benign bone tumors of the foot were treated at the Bone Tumor Center of the Rizzoli Institute. Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC) and giant cell tumors (GCT) are rare and often they are misdiagnosed. To define the clinical and radiographic features useful for diagnosis, x-rays of 24 ABCs and 21 GCTs of the foot were reviewed. Adding our series to the cases reported in the literature, the only important clinical data that emerged was the average age of patients affected by ABC and GCT (15 and 27 years, respectively). ABCs localized in small tarsal bones were rare (6%),

Influence of foot orthoses on bone alignment parameters of the foot: a cadaveric weight-bearing CT study.

INTRODUCTION: Given the inconclusive evidence regarding the effects of foot orthoses in flatfoot management, this study aimed to assess the impact of two distinct types of foot orthoses on three-dimensional bone alignment of the foot using advanced imaging techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen fresh-frozen cadaveric feet showing radiological signs of progressive collapsing foot deformity were collected. Two different types of foot orthoses, type I with medial support and lateral counter-support and type II with an additional metatarsal pad, were custom-made. The feet were loaded using a t

[Changes in bones of the foot and development of inserting tendons of the lower leg musculature in tibial aplasia].

Skeleton, muscles and tendons were investigated in 3 lower legs with aplasia of the tibia. The tibiofibular joint appears to be rather a syndesmosis than a diarthrosis. In all 3 cases, talus and calcaneus are connected by a synostosis. Also in the other parts of the skeleton of the feet, synarthroses with different extensions are found. The muscles, normally originating from the tibia, have shifted their origin to the fibula. The proximal part of the inserting tendons under the retinacula is quite normal. Also, their distal part in the region of the metatarsalia and of the digits exhibits no a

[Osteomyelitis in diabetic foot: reconstruction with autologous bone graft].

Moderate to severe infections in the diabetic foot (DF), such as osteomyelitis, frequently require surgical intervention and prolonged antibiotic therapy. Amputation is often unavoidable, with high morbidity and mortality rates in the initial years. Bone resection can lead to deformities and loss of foot function, introducing further complications. This report presents a case of a 45-year-old patient with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and osteomyelitis in the first ray, managed through surgical debridement, an antibiotic-loaded cement spacer, and vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) to control infect

Novel Finding of an Excess Bone in Postaxial Polydactyly of the Foot.

BACKGROUND: Postaxial polydactyly is a common congenital foot anomaly. However, the severity of the anomaly varies from simple cases with only soft tissue duplication to complex cases with bone and joint disorders. In our clinical practice, we found a new morphological anomaly of postaxial polydactyly. We encountered several cases of postaxial polydactyly with bone fragments located between the fourth and fifth toes. The bone fragments were independent of the joint cavity. The mechanisms underlying its development remain unknown because it is a novel disorder. In the present study, we investig

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the foot: A series of 10 cases.

BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a benign, locally aggressive tumor that occurs in childhood and early adulthood. It usually affects the metaphysis of long bones but can also occur in the foot. METHODS: This single-center study is a retrospective review of ten patients with primary ABCs of the foot which underwent an intralesional curettage or a polidocanol instillation. RESULTS: After intralesional curettage a local recurrence was observed in 3/5 cases. The instillation of polidocanol showed a significant reduction of the initial cyst volume (p=0.0267). In the instillation subgroup

How to increase the accuracy of the diagnosis of the accessory bone of the foot?

PURPOSE: The study was conducted to search for confident radiological signs in symptomatic cases of accessory bones. A normal accessory bone appearance on X-ray does not exclude that the accessory bone is the source of the discomfort; because of this, MRI examination can later be applied as part of the diagnosis. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed cases of 64 patients with recognized 70 symptomatic accessory bones of the foot. The average age was 29.2 (range 8-42) years. We included only patients with X-ray and MRI examinations. We investigated the following radiological features of the bon

An Unusual Presentation of Verrucous Carcinoma of the Foot with Bone Invasion.

Verrucous carcinoma of the foot is a rare malignancy, and proper diagnosis can be delayed. Furthermore, misdiagnosis often results in delayed appropriate treatment. Herein, we present an unusual case of verrucous carcinoma of the fifth toe with bone invasion in a 63-year-old woman that was mistaken for a plantar wart for 3 years. The condition was treated by ray amputation. We emphasize the need for appropriate biopsy to achieve an accurate diagnosis.
