The Football Association Medical Research Programme: an audit of injuries in professional football-analysis of preseason injuries.

OBJECTIVES: To conduct a detailed analysis of preseason football injuries sustained in English professional football over two competitive seasons. METHODS: Club medical staff at 91 professional football clubs annotated player injuries. A specific injury audit questionnaire was used together with a weekly form that documented each club's current injury status. RESULTS: 17% (1025) of the total number of injuries over the two seasons were sustained during the preseason, the mean number of days absent per injury was 22.3 days. Younger age groups (17-25 yrs) were more likely to sustain a preseaso…

Injuries in professional football: current concepts.

Professional football is one of the most popular sports in the United States. There is a common constellation of injuries that are seen frequently. Much attention has been focused on concussions and their long-term outcomes in this population. Other common causes of morbidity include cervical spine injuries, knee injuries including anterior cruciate ligament and other ligamentous injuries, ankle sprains, and medical issues including cardiac and sickle trait. Several recent studies have focused on hip impingement and hamstring injuries, among others, as sources of missed playing time as well. T…

Pediatric cervical spondylolysis and American football.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Cervical spondylolysis (CS) is a rare condition and is even more uncommon in pediatric patients. It is characterized by a disruption of the articular mass at the junction of the superior and inferior facet joints and often is diagnosed incidentally. The C6 level is most commonly involved, and the cause of CS remains unknown. There are no recommendations in the literature regarding activity modification in patients with CS and no discussion as to risks of participation in American football or other contact sports. PURPOSE: To report a case of C6 bilateral cervical spondylol…

Measuring football fever through wearable technology.

Football is the world's most popular sport, evoking strong physiological and emotional responses among its fans. Yet, the specific reactions to fan involvement have received little attention in the literature. In this paper, we quantify the resulting physiological responses through a unique case study from professional football: the 2025 cup final of the German Football Association (DFB) between first-division club VfB Stuttgart and third-division club Arminia Bielefeld. We collected high-resolution smartwatch data, including heart rate and stress level, from 229 Arminia Bielefeld fans over ap…

Fantasy football points capture performance declines in National Football League offensive skill players following an ankle injury.

BACKGROUND: The ankle is one of the anatomic sites most frequently injured in National Football League (NFL) players. Ankle injuries have previously been shown to have long-lasting negative impacts, and have been associated with impaired athletic performance. The aim of this study was to use fantasy football points as a metric to evaluate the impact of ankle injuries on NFL offensive skill player performance. METHODS: An open-access online database was used to identify NFL players who sustained ankle injuries from 2009 to 2020. Another public online database was used to determine fantasy poin…

Injury incidence in semi-professional football claims for increased need of injury prevention in elite junior football.

PURPOSE: Injuries are a common occurrence in football. Sufficient epidemiological data are available in professional football but not in salaried semi-professional football. This study investigates the injury incidence at different levels of semi-professional football with focus on junior football. METHODS: The data were based on injury reports provided by players and medical staff over the 2015-2016 season, which corresponded to the consensus statement for data samples in football. This study investigated the injury incidence and prevalence of five skill levels of semi-professional football …

"I Am a Football Player and/or a Girl": Psychosemantics of Self-Consciousness among Teenage Female Football Players.

BACKGROUND: Women's football (soccer), despite official recognition and growing popularity, is perceived as a gender-non-typical sport. This contradiction can be implicitly transmitted by society and acts as a condition of conflict in the self-consciousness of teenage female football players (TFFPs). In this study, the model of self-consciousness is defined as the semantic structures generated in the dialogic interaction "person - sociocultural environment". OBJECTIVE: Various options, including internally conflicting ones, for the content of self-consciousness in the context of both gender (…

Age at First Exposure to Tackle Football is Associated with Cortical Thickness in Former Professional American Football Players.

Younger age at first exposure (AFE) to repetitive head impacts while playing American football increases the risk for later-life neuropsychological symptoms and brain alterations. However, it is not known whether AFE is associated with cortical thickness in American football players. Sixty-three former professional National Football League players (55.5 ± 7.7 years) with cognitive, behavioral, and mood symptoms underwent neuroimaging and neuropsychological testing. First, the association between cortical thickness and AFE was tested. Second, the relationship between clusters of decreased corti…

Associations Between Football-Related Exposures, Head Injury, Tinnitus, and Neuropsychological Health Outcomes Among Professional American-Style Football Players.

OBJECTIVES: Auditory dysfunction such as tinnitus is a common sequelae of traumatic brain injury (TBI), and has been associated with neurobehavioral outcomes, including cognitive decline, depression, and anxiety. Few studies have examined associations between concussion history and tinnitus independent of confounding by blast injury or occupational noise exposure. This study investigated concussion history and tinnitus among former professional American-style football (ASF) players, and evaluated whether tinnitus mediates associations between concussion history and neurobehavioral outcomes. M…

The neurological risks of playing association football.

AIMS: The present study aims to provide a narrative review of the literature surrounding concussion and head injury in football and its clarity in evaluating the risk of long-term neurological disease. FINDINGS: Epidemiological studies have shown correlations between participation in professional football and increased incidence of neurodegenerative disease and there have been reports of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in the brains of former players in autopsy. These findings have been assumed by some to be the result of repetitive brain injury from head injuries and/or from heading t…
