Spiders are often wrongly designated as responsible for cutaneous eruptions. We aim to describe spider bites and the spider species implicated in metropolitan France. A retrospective observational study was conducted for all reported cases of spider bites from 2007 to 2018 extracted from the French Poison Control Centers (PCCs) information system, after exclusion of non-native spiders. DESIGN: A national survey in France in 1995 using a questionnaire mailed to all French microbiological laboratories performing mycobacteria cultures.
RESULTS: M. bovis was isolated in 38 out of 7075 cases of bacteriologically confirmed tuberculosis (0.5%) notified to the National Reference Centre (CNR) in 1995, resulting in an incidence of 0.07 per 100,000 population. New Candida species such as Candida auris have emerged recently as important invasive fungal diseases. We report a case of C. bovina bloodstream infection in a 94-year-old patient in France. The species led to identification issues because it was misidentified by phenotypic and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry methods.

BACKGROUND: Sporotrichosis is rare in Europe. We report a case of fixed cutaneous sporotrichosis in an immunocompetent French patient.
PATIENT AND METHODS: A 35-year-old French man presented with a cutaneous nodule on the right forefinger that had been present for 6 months. The patient's work involved contact with soil. He was diagnosed with fixed cutaneous sporotrichosis following isolation of Sporothrix schenckii in a skin biopsy culture in Sabouraud medium. The culture was negative for atypical mycobacterioses. The patient recovered on oral itraconazole (Sporanox) treatment.

Hepatitis E must no longer be considered simply as an exotic disease occasionally imported from developing countries. Autochthonous hepatitis E exists in France. We used pulsed-field gel electrophoresis analysis and genotyping to compare clinical isolates of Bordetella pertussis recovered since the early 1990s in Finland and France, 2 countries with similar histories of long-term mass vaccination with whole-cell pertussis vaccines. Isolates from both countries were similar genetically but varied temporally.

Four persons became ill with trichinellosis after eating meat from a wild boar hunted in Camargue, France. Nonencapsulated larvae of Trichinella pseudospiralis were detected in meat and muscle biopsy specimens. The diagnoses were confirmed by molecular typing. Surveillance for the emerging T. pseudospiralis should be expanded.
