A large body of evidence indicates that high intakes of fruit and vegetables are associated with a reduced risk of cancer at several sites. The association is generally most marked for epithelial cancers, apparently stronger for those of the digestive and respiratory tracts, and somewhat weaker for hormone-related cancers. Clinically significant allergic reactions to latex have recently been reported with increasing frequency. Most instances of latex allergy have been noted in adults who are atopic and are in the healthcare or latex manufacturing industries. Common fruits and vegetables were tested as such with the "scratch-chamber" method in 388 patients with various atopic disorders. Of the patients with hypersensitivity to birch pollen, 36% showed immediate positive responses to these natural, fresh materials.
