[Multicenter study of fungemia due to yeasts in Argentina].

The incidence of candidemia has increased approximately 500% in high-complexity hospitals. A change in the spectrum of Candida infections du … lates were susceptible to amphotericin B, fluconazole and itraconazole. Mortality associated to the fungemia by yeasts episodes (n=265) was 30%, lower than results previously determined (33-54%). The mortality percentage in patients who received antifungal therapy versus patients without treatment was 26.3% and 47%, respectively.

Clinical evaluation of catheter-related fungemia and bacteremia.

Forty-four patients with catheter-related infection admitted to Hokusho Central Hospital between 1985 and 1991 were studied retrospectively. The rate of catheter-related fungemia or bacteremia to all corresponding cases of fungemia and bacteremia increased from 7.7% in 1985 to 28.8% in 1991. The isolated pathogens were Candida parapsilosis (8 strains), Candida tropicalis (6 strains), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) (6 strains), methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) (5 strains) and Streptococcus epidermidis (3 strains). Bacteremia occurred after catheterization of the femora…

Candida tropicalis fungemia in children with leukemia and lymphoma.

Five episodes of fungemias are described; all had occurred in children with leukemia or lymphoma between January 1, 1978 and December 31, 1990. These fungemias comprised 3.4% of the total septicemias encountered during that period. Three episodes occurred during the induction phase and two during relapse. All patients had fever of varying degree and duration. In addition to steroids, all were receiving combination antibiotics before the fungemia had occurred. All patients had severe neutropenia lasting more than one week. Bacteremia preceded fungemia in four patients. Two episodes were diagnos…

Case report: nosocomial fungemia caused by Candida diddensiae.

BACKGROUND: Candida diddensiae, a yeast found in olive oil, is considered non-pathogenic to humans. Here, we describe the first case of fungemia caused by C. diddensiae in a hospitalized patient with underlying diseases. CASE PRESENTATION: A 62-year-old woman was admitted because of multiple contusions due to repeated falls and generalized weakness. She presented with chronic leukopenia due to systemic lupus erythematosus, and multiple cranial nerve neuropathies due to a recurring chordoma. She was given a lipid emulsion containing total parenteral nutrition (TPN) starting on the day of admis…

Fungemia associated with left ventricular assist device support.

OBJECTIVE: Infections remain an important complication of left ventricular assist device (LVAD) support. While relatively uncommon, fungal infections present a serious concern given a high association with adverse events including death. We sought to further characterize the epidemiology of fungemias during LVAD support. METHODS: Retrospective review of 292 patients receiving LVAD support from October 1996 to April 2009 at the University of Michigan Health System was done. RESULTS: Seven cases of LVAD-associated fungemia were observed during the study period (0.1 infections/1000 days of devi…

Central venous catheter-associated fungemia secondary to mucormycosis.

Mucormycosis can cause fatal infections in immuno-compromised persons. Rhinocerebral and pulmonary disease predominate. Diagnosis is challenging, dissemination frequent, and mortality high. Positive blood cultures are rare. We report the first case of central venous catheter-associated mucormycosis fungemia (Mucor circinelloides). Early diagnosis and multi-modal therapy led to clinical and microbiological cure.

Trichosporon fungemia in critically ill patients: A case series.

Trichosporon species are emerging opportunistic pathogens capable of causing a spectrum of disease, from superficial skin infections to deep-seated, disseminated, and life-threatening infections. These infections are often challenging to diagnose due to their rarity, frequent misidentification as Candida , and intrinsic resistance to conventional antifungal therapies, resulting in delays in appropriate management. We report a case series of Trichosporon fungemia in six critically ill patients, highlighting varied clinical presentations. Common comorbidities included diabetes mellitus, hyperten…

Scheffersomyces spartinae Fungemia among Pediatric Patients, Pakistan, 2020-2024.

Prevalence of emerging fungal infections is increasing, particularly among immunocompromised persons, children, and older persons. We report 108 cases of Scheffersomyces spartinae infection in pediatric patients from Karachi and other cities in Pakistan, of which 107 were identified from blood cultures. Cultures were initially misidentified as Clavispora lusitaniae by a biochemical assay before speciation as S. spartinae by whole-genome sequencing. All isolates were from children <12 years of age, and >69% were from children <1 month of age. Isolates were genetically distinct across regions of

Coccidioides Fungemia in Central California: A 10-Years Experience.

BACKGROUND: Coccidioides fungemia is an uncommon but severe manifestation of disseminated coccidioidomycosis, associated with high mortality. Despite high endemicity in California's San Joaquin Valley, recent data from this region are limited. This study aims to describe the clinical characteristics, risk factors, and outcomes of patients with Coccidioides fungemia at a Central California tertiary care center. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of patients diagnosed with Coccidioides fungemia between 2015 and 2025 at Community Regional Medical Centers (CRMC) in Fresno, California. D…

Catheter-related Aspergillus Fungemia: Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Aspergillus fungemia is encountered infrequently in clinical practice, even in the setting of invasive and disseminated disease. Prolonged Aspergillus fungemia secondary to a central venous catheter is notably rarer. METHODS: We describe the case of a 13-year-old boy with Aspergillus fungemia in the setting of a central venous catheter who was found to have pulmonary aspergillosis upon evaluation. We reviewed the literature for published cases of catheter-related Aspergillus fungemia and summarized the findings. We also sought to differentiate true fungemia from pseudofungemia and…

First case of neonatal fungemia caused by Aureobasidium melanogenum.

Aureobasidium melanogenum is a saprophytic, dematiaceous, yeast-like fungus rarely implicated in human infections. Here, we report the first case of A. melanogenum fungemia in a 30-week-old preterm, very low birth weight neonate born to a primigravida with history of gestational diabetes, pregnancy induced hypertension and oligohydramnios. The baby developed respiratory distress, hypotension, bradycardia, coagulopathy and septic shock shortly after birth, and eventually succumbed to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome on day 9 of life. Paired blood culture showed growth of a dematiaceous yeast…

Trichosporon inkin fungemia case report: clinical and laboratory management.

Trichosporon species are emerging as opportunistic pathogens that mainly affect immunocompromised patients. Patients with onco-hematological diseases usually present with fungemia by Trichosporon species, especially by T. asahii. Reports of this infection by other species of the genus are uncommon. Thus, in this paper, we present a case of T. inkin fungemia in a 39-year-old female patient with intestinal obstruction and absence of malignant hematological diseases. The late mycological diagnosis, the ineffective control of her pre-existing conditions and consequent failure to start antifungal t…

Secondary Aortoduodenal Fistula Presenting as Gastrointestinal Bleeding and Fungemia.

A 55-year-old African American man with a history of abdominal aortic pseudoaneurysm repair presented to the ED with complaints of black-colored stools mixed with fresh blood and fever for three days duration. The exam was unremarkable except for abdominal bruits and pallor. CT angiogram showed perigraft fluid collection, bowel wall thickening, and loss of normal fat planes between the aorta and adjacent bowel at the level of the third portion of the duodenum. Polymicrobial infection was noted in the aortic graft and blood cultures grew Candida. The patient underwent urgent removal of the infe

Neonatal fungemia caused by Hansenula anomala: a case report.

Hansenula anomala, an ascosporogenous yeast of the class Ascomycetes, is a free-living organism isolated from the environment. It is also a part of the normal or transient flora of the human throat and alimentary tract. It has been recognized as an opportunistic pathogen and its infection is very rare. A premature infant, a victim of right femoral osteomyelitis and right hip arthritis caused by oxacillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, was found to have developed H. anomala fungemia just before the initiation of the antimicrobial therapy with teicoplanin. Antifungal agents (fluconazole and am…

Fungemia during murine cryptococcosis sheds some light on pathophysiology.

We studied fungemia over time in outbred mice infected with Cryptococcus neoformans and looked at its relationship with the intravenous (i.v.) inoculum size, tissue burden and survival. Fungemia was evaluated by culture of 10 microl of peripheral blood from living mice or by culture of buffy coats from sacrificed animals. For all inoculum sizes studied, fungemia could last several weeks after the i.v. inoculation. Individual susceptibility of outbred mice to cryptococcal infection was evidenced by variations in the course, duration and magnitude of fungemia and tissue localizations. These resu…

Risk factors for death among cancer patients with fungemia.

In order to identify prognostic factors for death among cancer patients with fungemia, an 18-month survey of fungemia in patients with cancer was undertaken in three hospitals in Rio de Janeiro. For the assessment of risk factors for death, the following variables were analyzed: age; gender; underlying cancer; last treatment for the underlying disease; previous surgery; use of antibiotics, antifungal agents, steroids, or total parenteral nutrition; use of a central venous catheter; chemotherapy; radiotherapy; presence and duration of neutropenia; etiologic agent of the fungemia; treatment of t…

Intra-abdominal abscess and fungemia caused by candida krusei.

A 73-year-old man with chronic lymphocytic leukemia experienced an intra-abdominal abscess caused by Candida krusei. Treatment with drainage alone led to dissemination of the infection and resultant C krusei fungemia. The fungemia responded to therapy with amphotericin B, but the patient died of multisystem failure. We stress the rarity of intra-abdominal infection and fungemia with this organism and the necessity for treatment of candidal intra-abdominal infection with antifungal agents. X
