Treadmill gait analysis characterizes gait alterations in Parkinson's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis mouse models.

Guillot, Asress, Richardson, Glass, and Miller (2008) recently reported that treadmill gait analysis does not detect motor deficits in animal models of Parkinson's disease (PD) or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The authors studied aged C57BL/6J mice administered the neurotoxin 1-methyl 4-phenyl 1-, 2-, 3-, 6-tetrahydropyridine to model PD, and a small number of presymptomatic superoxide dismutase 1 G93A mice to study ALS. Several key issues merit discussion to put their observations in perspective. An increasing number of research groups are applying treadmill gait analysis to their rode…

Stance and Gait Analysis of Apollo Astronauts on the Moon.

INTRODUCTION/AIM: As humans return to the Moon, safe efficient ambulation and fall prevention on the lunar surface are key concerns. The analysis of gait from archived Apollo mission video footage is now possible with pose estimation video analysis software. Thus, this study aims to retrospectively quantify parameters of Apollo astronauts' stance and gait on the Moon. METHODS: Publicly available National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) footage of astronauts ambulating on the Lunar surface was examined using body pose analysis software. Goniometric lower limb joint/torso angles and

Optomechanical Analysis of Gait in Patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory rheumatic disease associated with alterations in posture and gait. The aim of this study was to assess the gait of AS patients using pedobarography and a markerless motion capture system. This is the first study of this population to combine these two methods. Twelve AS patients and twelve healthy controls were enrolled in this study. An instrumented gait analysis of both groups was performed using pedobarography and Microsoft Kinect v2. The AS group was significantly older than the controls (p < 0.05). The AS group showed a significantly l…

Energy analysis of gait in patients with down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: the primary aim of this study is to analyse the energy parameters of patients with Down syndrome compared to a control group and secondly to verify whether the sport activity leads to differences in energy expenditure. METHODS: 3 groups of subjects were identified: 8 healthy subjects and 147 subjects with Down syndrome, of whom 14 played sports at least once a week. An energy index was calculated, given by the ratio between potential and kinetic energy. Next, kinetic ad potential energy parameters were extrapolated at 60% of the gait cycle (propulsion phase). FINDINGS: Down syndr

Gait analysis in patients operated on for sacrococcygeal teratoma.

BACKGROUND: Long-term follow-up of sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) is well established; however, little is known about the effects of extensive surgery in the pelvic and perineal region, which involves disruption of muscles providing maximal support in normal walking. METHODS: Thirteen patients operated on at birth for SCT with extensive muscle dissection underwent gait studies with a Vicon 3-D motion analysis system with 6 cameras. Results were compared with 15 age-matched controls. Statistical analysis was performed with Mann-Whitney test; correlations were sought with Spearman's correlation

Quantitative gait analysis in patients with vascular parkinsonism.

Until now the clinical criteria for the diagnosis of vascular parkinsonism (VP) have been disputed. The purpose of the present study is to investigate whether quantitative gait analysis can differentiate between the gait pattern of patients with VP and the gait pattern of patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD). Twelve patients with VP, 12 patients with PD, and 10 neurologically nondiseased controls were examined by quantitative gait analysis. Patients with VP, having a similar gait velocity and stride length, showed relatively preserved arm swing with markedly more anteflexion in th…

Analysis of gait in patients with peripheral vestibular disorders.

Analysis of gait in patients with acute unilateral peripheral vestibular disorders was performed using foot switches and electromyography, with the aid of a telemetry system. Among the eight parameters set for the analysis, the occurrence rate of abnormality in the coefficient of variation (CV) was the highest (78%) for the time from heel strike to forefoot strike, followed by that of the location of maximum monophasic contraction of the gastrocnemius during stance, swing and stance. No significant laterality concerning the abnormally increased CV value in those parameters was found except for

Clinical Feasibility of a Markerless Gait Analysis System.

BACKGROUND: The gait analysis method that has been used in clinical practice to date is an optical tracking system (OTS) using a marker, but a markerless gait analysis (MGA) system is being developed because of the expensive cost and complicated examination of the OTS. To apply this MGA clinically, a comparative study of the MGA and OTS methods is necessary. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the compatibility between the OTS and the MGA methods and to evaluate the usefulness of the MGA system in actual clinical settings. METHODS: From March 2021 to August 2021, 14 patients underwent g…

Analysis of veering during gait in blind individuals.

BACKGROUND: Veering occurs during blind walking, which causes individuals to deviate from crosswalks or fall off platforms. Despite being linked to static postural control, the relationship between veering and gait function (gait variability and plantar pressure), which is presumed to be related to dynamic postural control, has yet to be fully understood. RESEARCH QUESTION: How do gait variability and plantar pressure affect veering? METHODS: This experiment involved a walking task in which 11 blind adults were instructed to walk along a straight path using a white cane. We measured the veer

The use of orthoses and gait analysis in children with AMC.

PURPOSE: Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) can be described as a complex condition characterized by deformed joints with an intact sensory system. Consequences of muscle weakness and joint contractures in the lower limbs influence walking ability. With orthoses most children achieve functional ambulation. Based on four studies, the aim of this article was to describe gait pattern wearing habitual orthoses, to quantify quiet standing, to test and describe a new orthosis and compare gait differences with regular orthoses, in children with AMC. METHODS: In total 83 children, of which 35 w

A force measuring treadmill in clinical gait analysis.

This preliminary study presents the development and testing of an instrumented treadmill device measuring the ground reaction forces (GRFs) and the feasibility of using this force measuring treadmill (FMT) in clinical gait analysis. A commercially available treadmill was modified and fitted out with three-dimensional strain-gauge force transducers. Tests of linearity, centre of pressure position (CoP), cross talk, natural frequency, background noises, and belt speed were undertaken in order to assess the performance of the FMT. In addition, the GRFs and segmental kinematics were recorded while…

Gait analysis of sporadic and hereditary spastic paraplegia.

OBJECTIVES: Sporadic (SSP) and hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSP) are clinically and genetically heterogeneous disorders, which are characterised by a slowly progressive spastic paraparesis. Initial symptoms and the rate of progression are variable even among members of the same family. Spastic paraparesis is the major and most disabling clinical symptom and was assessed with gait analysis using a three-dimensional infrared movement analysis system. METHODS AND RESULTS: 22 patients with clinically and/or genetically confirmed SSP/HSP were compared with age-matched control subjects. Signific…

[Spastic gait analysis. Contribution of the motion lab].

Etienne-Jules Marey introduced gait motion analysis at the end of the XIXth century. It was rapidly adopted by clinicians and Charcot used it at the beginning of the XXth century in La Salpêtrière. Motion analysis was widely used after the first optoelectronic system was built by Furné in 1968. The optoelectronic system calculates the orientation of each body segment in the space after the determination of the space co-ordinates of cutaneous markers placed over them. It is particularly useful for spastic gait. Many disturbances of kinematics and kinetics have been described during spastic gait
