The effect of altitude on umbilical cord blood gases.

OBJECTIVE: Analysis of umbilical cord blood acid-base status has proven useful in the immediate care and resuscitation of the newborn and provides an objective measure of the intrapartum fetal environment. Our study was designed to determine whether there are any significant differences in the acid-base status of neonates delivered at a relatively high altitude of 6000 ft compared with sea-level controls. METHODS: Our study population consisted of 300 women who had undergone spontaneous vaginal delivery after uncomplicated labor; 150 delivered at an institution located at an elevation of 5900

Assessing the potential climate impact of anaesthetic gases.

There is increasing concern within the health-care community about the role care delivery plays in environmental degradation, sparking research into how to reduce pollution from clinical practice. Inhaled anaesthetics is a particular research area of interest for two reasons. First, several gases are potent greenhouse gases, and waste gas is mostly emitted directly to the environment. Second, there are options to reduce gas waste and substitute medications and procedures with fewer embodied emissions while delivering high-quality care. Performance improvements are contingent on a proper unders…

NO, CO and H2S: A trinacrium of bioactive gases in the brain.

Oxygen and carbon dioxide are time honored gases that have direct bearing on almost all life forms, but over the past thirty years, and in large part due to the Nobel Prize Award in Medicine for the elucidation of nitric oxide (NO) as a bioactive gas, the research and medical communities now recognize other gases as critical for survival. In addition to NO, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and carbon monoxide (CO) have emerged as a triumvirate or Trinacrium of gases with analogous importance and that serve important homeostatic functions. Perhaps, one of the most intriguing aspects of these gases is the…

Inhalational Gases for Neuroprotection in Traumatic Brain Injury.

Despite multiple prior pharmacological trials in traumatic brain injury (TBI), the search for an effective, safe, and practical treatment of these patients remains ongoing. Given the ease of delivery and rapid absorption into the systemic circulation, inhalational gases that have neuroprotective properties will be an invaluable resource in the clinical management of TBI patients. In this review, we perform a systematic review of both pre-clinical and clinical reports describing inhalational gas therapy in the setting of TBI. Hyperbaric oxygen, which has been investigated for many years, and so…

[Removal of mixed waste gases by the biotrickling filter].

A biotrickling filter (BTF) was designed for treating mixed waste gases, which contained hydrogen sulfide (H2S), tetrahydrofuran (THF) and dichloromethane (DCM) at the start-up and steady states. The removal efficiency of H2S and DCM could maintain about 99% and 60%, respectively, and the removal efficiency of DCM was reduced from 90% to 37% with the shortening empty bed retention time (EBRT) form 50 to 20 seconds when the inlet concentrations were 200, 100, 100 mg x m(-3) of H2S, THF, DCM, respectively. In the theoretical study, the biodegradation efficiency of contaminants was H2S > THF > DC…

Isothermal absorption of soluble gases by atmospheric nanoaerosols.

We investigate mass transfer during the isothermal absorption of atmospheric trace soluble gases by a single droplet whose size is comparable to the molecular mean free path in air at normal conditions. It is assumed that the trace reactant diffuses to the droplet surface and then reacts with the substances inside the droplet according to the first-order rate law. Our analysis applies a flux-matching theory of transport processes in gases and assumes constant thermophysical properties of the gases and liquids. We derive an integral equation of Volterra type for the transient molecular flux den…

A guide to regulation of blood gases: part three.

In the third and final part of this series looking at blood gas analysis, Liz Allibone and Nicola Nation provide three examples of how arterial blood gas results assist in the diagnosis and management of illness.

The origin of stable halogenated compounds in volcanic gases.

Therapeutic gases for neonatal and pediatric respiratory care.

Though oxygen is the most frequently administered gas in respiratory care, the use of other specialty gases has become common practice in neonatal and pediatric intensive care and emergency departments across the United States. This report reviews the literature and evidence regarding 4 such specialty gases: heliox (helium-oxygen mixture), nitric oxide, hypoxic gas (ie, < 21% oxygen), and carbon dioxide. Because heliox is less dense than air or nitrogen, it offers less resistance and turbulence as an inhaled gas and therefore decreases the pressure and work of breathing necessary to ventilate …

Using an algorithm to interpret arterial blood gases.

The arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis, one of the most common tests ordered, provides clinicians with valuable information on a patient's oxygenation and acid-base balance. Interpreting ABG analysis results can be challenging, even for the most experienced practitioners, because it requires knowledge of the physiology and cause-and-effect relationship of the disturbances. Applying the principles and the ABG algorithm described in this article will provide nurses with a systematic way to interpret uncomplicated arterial blood gas results, including primary, mixed, and compensated acidbase distu

Exposure of postoperative nurses to exhaled anesthetic gases.

UNLABELLED: The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has established recommended exposure limits of 25 parts per million (ppm) as a time-weighted average for nitrous oxide and a ceiling of 2 ppm for volatile anesthetics. We quantified exposure of postanesthetic nurses to exhaled anesthetic gases. This study was conducted in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU) of a medium-sized hospital. PACU air exchanges averaged 8 vol/h; however, much of this air was recirculated. We evaluated 50 adults anesthetized with either isoflurane (n = 19) or desflurane (n = 31). Roughly half …

Volcanic gases in the april 1979 soufriere eruption.

Six gas samples from the 17 April 1979 Soufriere eruption plume were analyzed for carbonyl sulfide, carbon disulfide, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, fluorocarbon-11, fluorocarbon-12, methyl chloroform, and carbon tetrachloride. Only carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, carbonyl sulfide, and carbon disulfide were found to have increased mixing ratios as compared with those in clean tropospheric air, but the increases were not sufficient to contribute greatly to the global budgets of these four components.

Trace contamination of anesthetic gases: a brief review.

Data have been reviewed relevant to the effects of chronic exposure to trace quantities of inhalation anesthetic agents. Much circumstantial evidence exists indicating a probable hazard to the clinician administering these agents. However, all previous studies in man have not identified the potential hazard of nitrous oxide without the presence of other contaminating agents.
