Application of geographical information system for lymphatic filariasis and malaria control in Nigeria.

Geographical Information System (GIS) is defined as an information system used to capture, store, edit, retrieve, analyze and visualize geographically referenced data. The use of GIS is one technology that is very useful in the prevention and control of Vector Borne Diseases (VBDs) such as lymphatic filariasis (LF) and malaria which cause high morbidity and mortality in Nigeria. This paper focuses on how the use of Geographical Information System (GIS) can be harnessed for surveillance, prevention and control of LF and malaria in Nigeria. GIS can be used as an operational tool to assist with r

Geographical information systems as a tool in the control of heartworm infections in dogs and cats.

Geospatial tools (e.g., geographical information systems, remote sensing, global positioning systems, and virtual globes) are very useful for the simultaneous visualization of health data with environmental data, which holds promise to understand environmental-health linkages and to generate new hypotheses to be tested in future research. Current epidemiological studies clearly show that the distribution patterns of vector-borne infections are changing; for example, in Europe, heartworm infection and subcutaneous dirofilariosis are spreading throughout areas that previously had little to no in

Consideration of social and environmental determinants of maternal and perinatal health in the geographic information systems era: a primer.

Social and environmental exposures influence health outcomes across the lifespan, including during the perinatal period. Negative exposures such as neighborhood deprivation, air pollution, and violence, as well as positive exposures such as greenspace, neighborhood cohesion, and walkability, interact to affect many complex health outcomes. Understanding the impact of neighborhood environmental exposures on health is required to design effective interventions to improve health impacts of the places shaping people's daily lives. In the era of geographic information systems (GIS), analyses deline…

Using remote sensing and geographic information systems to identify villages at high risk for rhodesiense sleeping sickness in Uganda.

Geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing were used to identify villages at high risk for sleeping sickness, as defined by reported incidence. Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM) satellite data were classified to obtain a map of land cover, and the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Landsat band 5 were derived as unclassified measures of vegetation density and soil moisture, respectively. GIS functions were used to determine the areas of land cover types and mean NDVI and band 5 values within 1.5 km radii of 389 villages where sleeping sickness incidence had bee…

Service deserts and service oases: Utilizing geographic information systems to evaluate service availability for individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder and co-occurring symptoms often require lifelong services. However, access to autism spectrum disorder services is hindered by a lack of available autism spectrum disorder providers. We utilized geographic information systems methods to map autism spectrum disorder provider locations in Michigan. We hypothesized that (1) fewer providers would be located in less versus more populated areas; (2) neighborhoods with low versus high socioeconomic status would have fewer autism spectrum disorder providers; and (3) an interaction would be found between population and socioeco…

The use of geographic information systems as a forensic tool to investigate sources of marine mammal entanglement in fisheries.

Commercial fisheries represent a significant anthropogenic threat to marine mammal survival. Causes of marine mammal mortality are commonly determined by detailed necropsies of stranded carcasses. Gross evidence of entanglement in a fishery might include gear attached to the body, internal indications of asphyxiation and trauma, or gear markings on the epidermis. As gear is often fishery-specific, wound patterns on the epidermis that are created by entanglements in fishing gear may serve to identify possible sources of mortality. For this study, tools within the Environmental Systems Research

Using geographical information systems and cartograms as a health service quality improvement tool.

INTRODUCTION: Disease prevalence can be spatially analysed to provide support for service implementation and health care planning, these analyses often display geographic variation. A key challenge is to communicate these results to decision makers, with variable levels of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) knowledge, in a way that represents the data and allows for comprehension. The present research describes the combination of established GIS methods and software tools to produce a novel technique of visualising disease admissions and to help prevent misinterpretation of data and less opt…

[Evaluation of visiting nursing care using geographical information system (GIS) technology].

PURPOSE: Previous evaluation studies of the visiting nursing program explained an average change of the participants' health status, without considering socio-ecological characteristics and their impacts. However, these factors must affect individual health problems and lifestyles. For effective and appropriate community based programs, the Geographical Information System (GIS) can be utilized. GIS is a computer-based tool for mapping and analyzing things that happen on earth, and integrates statistical analysis with unique visualization. The purpose of this study was to evaluate visiting nurs

Using geographical information system for spatial evaluation of canine extruded disc herniation.

Disc herniation is one of the most common pathologies of the vertebral column in dogs. The aim of this study was to develop a geographical information system (GIS)-based vertebral canal (VC) map useful for spatial evaluation of extruded disc herniation (EDH) in dogs. ArcGIS® was used to create two-dimensional and three-dimensional maps, in which the VC surface is divided into polygons by lines representing latitude and longitude. Actual locations and directions of the herniated disc material were assessed by a series of 142 computer tomographies of dogs collected between 2005 and 2013. Most ED

Transit bus access to healthy, affordable food: A novel geographic information system (GIS) and community-informed analysis.

Good nutrition reduces the risk of chronic disease, but many vulnerable populations do not have equitable access to healthy food. People who are lower-income, non-White, older, or disabled, have increased likelihood of not owning a vehicle and of being dependent on public buses to source healthy, affordable food. Our study took place in three municipalities targeted by the Rhode Island Department of Health for equity-focused interventions. Our methodology aimed to overcome limitations of prior analyses of public transit food access. We determined healthy food sources, stratifying their afforda
