EMS Pediatric Trauma Transport: Do Disparities Exist?

INTRODUCTION: Trauma is the leading cause of disability and death among children in the United States. Optimal outcomes are achieved at pediatric trauma centers (PTCs), which are specialized to address the unique needs of this population. Disparities in trauma have been reported, affecting optimal delivery of care. This study aims to investigate disparities in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) transport of pediatric and adolescent trauma patients and the factors influencing destination decisions. METHODS: This study utilized data from the National Emergency Medical Services Information System

Towards a Rational Balanced Pancreatic and Islet Allocation Schema.

Allocation of donated organs for transplantation is a complex process that considers numerous factors such as donor, organ and candidate characteristics and practical issues such as geography. Whole pancreas and isolated islet transplantation are lifesaving for certain individuals with diabetes. Herein, we suggest a revised allocation schema that matches donor characteristics with candidate medical condition while allowing for geographic considerations. It is hoped that adoption of this schema will shorten allocation time, decrease organ waste and optimize the parity between organ donor charac

Lateral epicondylitis treatment: international survey of surgeons' preferences and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Lateral epicondylitis (LE) is a common cause of elbow pain. Despite a relatively high prevalence and morbidity, there is still no single effective ('gold standard') treatment for LE. We hypothesised that a surgeon's experience, country of origin and area of expertise would influence choices concerning patient management. The purpose of this survey was to describe the current trends and common practices in treating LE worldwide. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 291 orthopaedic surgeons of 12 subspecialties from 57 countries were surveyed on their choice of LE treatment modalities.

Geospatial modeling of environmental and socioeconomic drivers of health outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compute the spatially varying associations between seven chronic health conditions-high blood pressure, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), stroke, cancer, diabetes, and frequent mental distress-and key environmental, built-environment, and socioeconomic determinants at the fine, census-tract scale in Harris County, Texas, USA. METHODS: The study uses three methods: Ordinary Least Squares (OLS), Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR), and Multiscale Geographically Weighted Regression (MGWR) to develop association models using 2022 data. The contribution of comparative genomics to health geography research: A case study on the identification of sites at which M. ulcerans contamination occurs in Benin.

We report here a significant advance in research into Buruli ulcer, a skin disease caused by an environmental bacterium (Mycobacterium ulcerans). We demonstrate the utility of crossed analyses of comparative genomics and geographic data to improve our understanding of the spatial dynamics of this disease and to identify potential sites of contamination with greater precision. An analysis of patient isolates from the endemic region Ouémé-Plateau (Benin) led to the detection, of a spatial clustering of three specific genotypes. It suggests the existence of different ecological reservoirs or part

Prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection among small mammals in Tatarstan, Russian Federation.

Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic parasite with a wide host range that includes humans, domestic animals and wild animals. Small mammals serve as intermediate hosts for T. gondii and may contribute to the persistence of this parasite in the environment. Mass mortality in wild animals and deaths in rare endemic species make the study of this parasite of growing importance. In this study, T. gondii infection prevalence was evaluated in brain tissues from 474 small mammals captured at 26 trapping points in urban and rural areas of Tatarstan, Russian Federation. Nested PCR was used to detect the T.

Echinococcus multilocularis Infection, Southern Ontario, Canada.

Alveolar echinococcosis, the disease caused by infection with the intermediate stage of the Echinococcus multilocularis tapeworm, is typically fatal in humans and dogs when left untreated. Since 2012, alveolar echinococcosis has been diagnosed in 5 dogs, 3 lemurs, and 1 chipmunk in southern Ontario, Canada, a region previously considered free of these tapeworms. Because of human and animal health concerns, we estimated prevalence of infection in wild canids across southern Ontario. During 2015-2017, we collected fecal samples from 460 wild canids (416 coyotes, 44 foxes) during postmortem exami

Assembling a geospatial database of tsetse-transmitted animal trypanosomosis for Africa.

BACKGROUND: African animal trypanosomosis (AAT), or nagana, is widespread within the tsetse-infested belt of sub-Saharan Africa. Although a wealth of information on its occurrence and prevalence is available in the literature, synthesized and harmonized data at the regional and continental scales are lacking. To fill this gap the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) launched the Atlas of tsetse and AAT, jointly implemented with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in the framework of the Programme Against African Trypanosomosis (PAAT). METHODS: The Atlas aims

Methodology for definition of yellow fever priority areas, based on environmental variables and multiple correspondence analyses.

Yellow fever (YF) is endemic in much of Brazil, where cases of the disease are reported every year. Since 2008, outbreaks of the disease have occurred in regions of the country where no reports had been registered for decades, which has obligated public health authorities to redefine risk areas for the disease. The aim of the present study was to propose a methodology of environmental risk analysis for defining priority municipalities for YF vaccination, using as example, the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The municipalities were divided into two groups (affected and unaffected by YF) and compare

Spatial distribution and natural environment mechanism of the cholera epidemic in ancient Jiangnan area, China.

Cholera, as an acute, high-risk and widespread infectious disease, has been studied by many scholars. Based on the data from <Annals of Epidemics in China over the Past 3000 Years>, this research investigated the spatial distribution of the cholera epidemic and natural environment mechanism of the cholera epidemic in the Jiangnan area, from the year 1820 to 1821. We applied a set of spatial statistical analyses to investigate the spatial heterogeneity and the factors that influence the cholera epidemic in the Jiangnan area. Results show that: 1) Spatial distribution of cholera epidemic lied at

Global Distribution of Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID) in the Light of the UNDP Human Development Index (HDI): A Preliminary Perspective of a Rare Disease.

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID), although the most common primary immunodeficiency in humans, is a rare disease. We explored the spatial global distribution and country-wise prevalence of CVID, based on published data and those available from databases. As a country's medical progress is linked to its technological and socio-economic developmental status, we expected that observed CVID prevalence was linked to human wellbeing. To assess this, we examined the correlation of observed CVID prevalence and the UNDP Human Development Index (HDI), which is a key measure of human development.

Classification of Ventricular Septal Defects for the Eleventh Iteration of the International Classification of Diseases-Striving for Consensus: A Report From the International Society for Nomenclature of Paediatric and Congenital Heart Disease.

The definition and classification of ventricular septal defects have been fraught with controversy. The International Society for Nomenclature of Paediatric and Congenital Heart Disease is a group of international specialists in pediatric cardiology, cardiac surgery, cardiac morphology, and cardiac pathology that has met annually for the past 9 years in an effort to unify by consensus the divergent approaches to describe ventricular septal defects. These efforts have culminated in acceptance of the classification system by the World Health Organization into the 11th Iteration of the Internatio

MenAfriNet: A Network Supporting Case-Based Meningitis Surveillance and Vaccine Evaluation in the Meningitis Belt of Africa.

Meningococcal meningitis remains a significant public health threat, especially in the African meningitis belt where Neisseria meningitidis serogroup A historically caused large-scale epidemics. With the rollout of a novel meningococcal serogroup A conjugate vaccine (MACV) in the belt, the World Health Organization recommended case-based meningitis surveillance to monitor MACV impact and meningitis epidemiology. In 2014, the MenAfriNet consortium was established to support strategic implementation of case-based meningitis surveillance in 5 key countries: Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Niger, and To

[The "natural focal diseases" medical and geographical atlas of Russia as a tool to analyze their incidence in the population].

The Faculty of Geography, M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University, is creating a "Natural Focal Diseases" medical and geographical atlas of Russia. The paper considers the possibilities of the atlas to monitor and assess the epidemiological situation of a number of diseases. The atlas allows one to define a spectrum of the most epidemically significant natural focal diseases in Russia, to quantitatively characterize their incidence in the population, and to visualize it in a series of maps, to make a medical geographical analysis of the prevalence of the nosological entities of natural focal di
