Proper surgical techniques can permit treatment of multiple gingival recession defects without altering the visible gingival pigmentation. In this case report, a patient presented with multiple adjacent sites displaying gingival recession. Natural pigmentation was present in the interdental papillae and in the zone of keratinized gingiva. This patient wanted his natural pigmentation to be preserved. A modified tunnel technique was used to avoid traumatizing the pigmented tissues and allow placement of a large graft. A double layer of an acellular dermal matrix (ADM) was implanted and the gingi…

AIM: The purpose of this study was to assess the success and predictability of root coverage and esthetics obtained with free gingival grafts (FGGs) in the treatment of early class III gingival recessions for a period of 12 months.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten patients contributed to 12 sites, each with early class III recession with interdental bone loss < or = 4 mm from cemento enamel junction(CEJ). Clinical parameters recorded at baseline and at 1, 6, and 12 months were probing depth (PD), recession depth (RD), recession width (RW), and clinical attachment level (CAL).
RESULTS: Reduction of…

This case report describes possible etiology, treatment, and 2-year outcome of a complicated case of gingival recession in the mandibular anterior dentition. Deep, cleftlike Miller Class I and II recessions at both mandibular canines and all incisors were treated using subperiosteal connective tissue grafts and coronally repositioned flaps. During surgery it was noted that the facial aspects of the roots had lost bone near the apex. After surgery profound alterations of gingival dimension occurred. Mean gingival thickness increased from 0.87 +/- 0.20 mm to 258 +/- 0.65 mm, and width of keratin…

Gingival recessions represent the most visible periodontal disease. The prevalence of gingival recessions is high. The root surface is literally exposed to negative influences such as erosion, abrasion, discoloration and decay. Moreover, gingival recessions can affect the quality of life by increased thermal sensitivity and reduced dento-gingival aesthetics. The aetiology of gingival recessions is complex and considered to be multifactorial. In order to prevent the development of gingival recessions during and after orthodontic treatment, several factors should be taken into account, among whi…

About every third patient of our department suffers from gingival recessions (g. r.): 1980, 1985, 1986, 1987 altogether 1039 patients from 4022. People at the age of 20-25 years are mainly affected: 44.4% of these patients in the age-group of 20-25 years suffer from g. r., 28.3% of patients suffering from l.P.a. are 20-25 years old. Patients diseased with g. r. (N = 60) show functional disturbances (79% at the 1st bicuspid, 72% at the 2nd bicuspid) during their occlusion movements to a great extent. Patients afflected by g.r. (N = 20) show in comparison to healthy people a smaller diameter of …

Gum recession is a common problem that in most cases does not cause any bothersome symptoms to the patient. They can affect people of any age and are most often diagnosed on the vestibular surfaces of the teeth. They are manifested by the exposure of part of the root through the apical migration of the gingival margin. Its etiology is not fully understood, but it is known that it consists of many factors. The authors discussed such factors as inflammation, gum biotype, patient's age, mechanical and chemical damage, smoking, presence of tartar, cervical defects and their reconstruction, orthodo

Gingival recession is a common finding in daily clinical practice. Several issues may be associated with the apical shift of the gingival margin such as dentine hypersensitivity, root caries, non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs), and compromised aesthetics. The first step in an effective management and prevention program is to identify susceptibility factors and modifiable conditions associated with gingival recession. Non-surgical treatment options for gingival recession defects include establishment of optimal plaque control, removal of overhanging subgingival restorations, behaviour change …
