[Recovery rate in chemotherapy of glanders].

It was shown that out of all the studied methods for the estimation of the recovery rate in animals with experimental malleus the solid-phase enzyme immunoassay with parallel growing of the test material and subsequent isolation of the antigens and L-forms proved to be the most efficient. In addition to the routine criteria of the recovery the malleinic test was a valuable diagnostic means for the estimation of the recovery rate and the efficacy of the antibacterial drugs in a model of guinea pigs. The immunological investigations revealed a dependence of the host sanation on the term of the a

THE HISTOLOGICAL LESIONS OF EXPERIMENTAL GLANDERS.

The bacillus of glanders may be so modified in virulence as to produce experimentally lesions differing widely in their histological features. The highly virulent culture causes primary necrosis and disintegration of the tissue followed by the invasion of the injured area by polymorphonuclear leucocytes. The bacilli of moderate virulence give rise to a primary lesion of an acute inflammatory nature in which the cells show no evidence of necrosis or disintegration. The attenuated bacilli produce primary tissue proliferation with the formation of epithelioid and giant cells. There is every grade…

Vaccines for the Prevention of Melioidosis and Glanders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Burkholderia pseudomallei's and Burkholderia mallei's high rate of infectivity, limited treatment options, and potential use as biological warfare agents underscore the need for development of effective vaccines against these bacteria. Research efforts focused on vaccines against these bacteria are in pre-clinical stages, with no approved formulations currently on the market. RECENT FINDINGS: Several live attenuated and subunit vaccine formulations have been evaluated in animal studies, with no reports of significant long term survival after lethal challenge. SUMMARY: This

Glanders: an overview of infection in humans.

Glanders is a highly contagious and often fatal zoonotic disease, primarily of solipds. In the developed world, glanders has been eradicated. However, prior use of B. mallei as a biological weapon and its high mortality in inhalation animal studies has affirmed B. mallei as a biodefense concern. This threat requires the development of new glanders medical countermeasures (MCMs), as there is a lack of an effective vaccine and lengthy courses of multiple antibiotics needed to eradicate B. mallei. Here, we present a literature review of human glanders in which we discuss the clinical epidemiology…

[The principles of the therapy of glanders in monkeys].

The effect of pathogenetic therapy in the normalization of homeostasis disturbances in monkeys has been shown under experimental conditions. Data on the possibility of using hemosorption in the treatment of severe forms of glanders are presented. The conclusion on the necessity of using complex treatment for the effective therapy of glanders in humans has been made.
