Leptospirosis is a common disease in tropical countries, and the kidney is one of the main target organs. Membrane proteins of Leptospira are capable of causing endothelial damage in vitro, but there have been no studies in humans evaluating endothelial glycocalyx damage and its correlation with acute kidney injury (AKI). AIMS: Antithrombin is an important inhibitor of the coagulation system, additionally exerting specific anti-inflammatory effects on endothelial cells. Healthy vascular endothelium is coated by the endothelial glycocalyx, diminution of which increases capillary permeability, e.g. after ischaemia. BACKGROUND: Corticosteroids are used in paediatric heart surgery to attenuate systemic inflammatory response. Glycocalyx regulates vascular permeability, shear stress and cell adhesion on the endothelium. Syndecan-1 serves as a biomarker of glycocalyx degradation.
