Intravitreal gnathostomiasis and review of literature.

Intravitreal gnathostomiasis is a rare disease. To our knowledge, only five case reports are available in the literature wherein the parasites were surgically removed from the vitreous cavity and the species were identified. In this report, we document the clinical features of intravitreal gnathostomiasis along with the route of entry and parasitic migration pattern in ocular tissue, surgical management, and electron microscopic features of the retrieved advanced third-stage larva of Gnathostoma spinigerum (aL3) for a 48-year-old Indian woman with excellent postsurgical visual recovery.

[Gnathostomiasis after a stay in Thailand].

During a 4-week holiday in Thailand a 13-year-old boy from Germany briefly fell ill with diarrhoea without blood-tinged stools and fever. 5 … , using larvae of Gnathostoma spinigerum as antigen, demonstrated antibodies against this nematode. Gnathostomiasis having been diagnosed treatment was started with albendazole (200 mg twice daily for 21 days), after which the boy was symptom free. After 2 months the eosinophilia had regressed to 10%, the white cell count was normal and the antibody titre had fal …

Albendazole for the treatment of human gnathostomiasis.

The efficacy of albendazole was investigated in 112 patients with symptomatic gnathostomiasis; 49 received 400 mg twice daily, 51 received 400 mg once daily, and 12 patients received placebo, all for 21 d. Subsequent follow-up was for 6 months. Cure (no further swelling) was seen in 93.9% and 94.1% of the treatment groups but in none of the placebo group. Additionally, reductions in eosinophil counts and in immunoglobulin G antibody were observed after treatment. Side effects were minimal. Albendazole may be an effective compound for the treatment of gnathostomiasis.

ELISA for immunodiagnosis of human gnathostomiasis.

An ELISA for immunodiagnosis of human gnathostomiasis using a crude water extract of third-stage larvae of G. spinigerum as antigen, and alkaline phosphatase labelled goat antihuman IgG in the indicator system was developed and evaluated. At the titre of 1:400 and above positive results were observed in 100% of 4 parasitological confirmed and 10 eosinophilic meningo-encephalitis (EME) typical of gnathostomiasis cases, 56% of 160 cutaneous migratory swelling cases, 33% of 24 cases with EME typical of A. cantonensis infections, 23% of 92 cases with other parasitic infections and 1.5% of blood do…

Gnathostomiasis. Infestation in an Asian immigrant.

With the recent influx of southeast Asians into the United States, an increased incidence of human gnathostomiasis can be expected. A Laotian woman had had two weeks of pruritus associated with fleeting erythematous patches on her abdomen. A peripheral eosinophilia was present. She withdrew a Gnathostoma spinigerum from the skin of her abdomen. Gnathostomiasis is endemic in much of Asia and causes not only migratory cutaneous swellings with erythema but also serious visceral sequelae such as eosinophilic encephalomyelitis. Excision of the parasite is the treatment of choice when possible.

Gnathostomiasis. A case of otological interest.

A young Thai man was afflicted with neurognathostomiasis. The symptomatology was distinct from that of eosinophillic myeloencephalitis. In view of its neurootological flavor, it is proposed that this newly described symptomatology of neurognathostomiasis should be referred to as the neurootological gnathostomiatic syndrome(NOGS).

[Foodborne dermatosis after traveling: gnathostomiasis].

We describe a case of a 32-year-old man, resident in Buenos Aires, with dermatologic manifestations compatible with gnathostomiasis. The patient had traveled to Colombia in the month prior to the onset of symptoms. There, he repeatedly ate ceviche (raw fish marinated in lemon juice). He presented with an erythematous migratory panniculitis accompanied by eosinophilia. He underwent skin biopsy of a lesion and pathological diagnosis was "eosinophilic panniculitis". The triad of migratory panniculitis, eosinophilia and consume of raw fish during the trip to Colombia was suggestive of gnathostomia…

[Gnathostomiasis in Brazil: case report].

Gnathostomiasis is an endemic disease in Asian countries caused by the ingestion of larval stage of Gnathostoma sp roundworms that may be acquired by eating raw fresh-water fish. It can reach many organs and the skin is one of them, characterized by creeping eruptions and/or migrating erythema. Since 1970 the number of patients affected seems to be increasing in Central and South America countries like Mexico and Peru. This is the first notification and publication of gnathostomiasis in Brazil, and it serves as an alert to the possibility of the emergence of this disease in non-endemic areas. …

[Migrating swellings from Asia: gnathostomiasis].

Two patients suffered from intermittent subcutaneous swellings of the face. A 41-year-old man recalled a recent episode with severe thoracic … patient was not treated because the frequency of the swellings had already decreased spontaneously. Gnathostomiasis is an infection by the nematode G. spinigerum. The main route of human infection is by eating insufficiently not well-cooked fish or frog. The initial infection is often not recognised, but severe symptoms can occur. In humans, the larva of the nema …

Antibody responses in human gnathostomiasis.

Sera from 4 patients with parasitologically confirmed gnathostomiasis and from 18 healthy individuals were studied by SDS-PAGE and Western blot analysis using radioiodinated protein A to detect antibody responses against crude aqueous somatic extract of advanced third stage larvae of Gnathostoma spinigerum (L3G). It was found that the L3G extract was highly complex, comprising of more than 40 polypeptides among which more than 20 components were antigenic in human. The relative M.W. of the proteins ranged from 13 kd to 150 kd with the major antigenic bands at 150, 135, 120, 94, 84, 82, 72, 55,…

IgE responses in human gnathostomiasis.

Specific IgE antibody levels in the serum of patients with proven gnathostomiasis and in those with intermittent cutaneous migratory swellings were determined by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using aqueous extracts of Gnathostoma spinigerum infective larvae as antigen. There was not only an elevation of specific IgE antibody levels but also a marked increase of total IgE in the serum of these patients. The mean levels of specific IgE antibody in both groups of patients were significantly higher than that of healthy controls (P less than 0.01). Only one of the 50 serum specimens…

Gnathostomiasis externa: a case report.

A case report of a cutaneous larva migrans caused by the nematode, Gnathostoma spinigerum, in which the worm was visualized at surgery and successfully removed, is presented. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second case of documented subcutaneous gnathostomiasis in the Western Hemisphere and the first in the upper extremity.
