[Government actions for the early detection of breast cancer in Latin America. Future challenges].

Documentary research carried out in 2009 aims to document the regulatory framework and existing programs for the early detection of breast cancer in Latin America and the Caribbean in order to establish the most important challenges for the containment of the epidemic in the region. The governments of the region have developed diverse efforts and initiatives to confront the rise in mortality due to said cause, including early detection, treatment and research strategies. Despite advances in the early detection of breast cancer, the challenge remains to link efforts to ensure continuity of care

Grief reactions in dementia carers: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Supporting dementia carers is an identified target of the UK government, yet we know little about such family carers' grief before and after the death of the person with dementia for whom they care. We systematically review the existing literature on characteristics, prevalence, predictors and associations of grief in dementia carers before and after death. METHODS: We searched electronic databases and found 31 publications meeting predetermined criteria. RESULTS: Grief in dementia carers, which may be normal or complicated, is a complex reaction to losses occurring before and aft

Challenges and Benefits of Repurposing Licensed/Approved/Cleared Products for a Radiation Indication.

Increasingly, the risk of a radiological or nuclear public health emergency is a major concern for the U.S. government. To address a potential incident and ensure that the U.S. Government is prepared to respond to any civilian or military casualties that could result, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), together with the Department of Defense, has been charged with the development of medical countermeasures (MCMs) to treat individuals experiencing acute and delayed injuries that can result from exposure to radiation. With limited research and development budgets, and the hi

Manpower, financial, material resources, and participation level in national fitness: a fuzzy-set QCA approach.

BACKGROUND: In the era of economic globalization, major public health events-such as the Ebola epidemic, the avian influenza epidemic, the "SARS" epidemic, and the COVID-19 pandemic-occur more frequently, severely endangering human life safety and health and making global public health governance a major survival issue of universal concern. Therefore, governments have included the improvement of national health in their sustainable development goals, and its important position in global and national health policies has become increasingly prominent. However, the most common non-medical interve

Creation and development of the public service orphan drug Human Botulism Immune Globulin.

The public service orphan drug Human Botulism Immune Globulin for the treatment of infant botulism would not have come into existence without the federal Orphan Drug Act and the funding mechanism that it provided to conduct pivotal clinical trials. Nonetheless, creating, developing, and achieving licensure of Human Botulism Immune Globulin took approximately 15 years and approximately $10.6 million (2005 dollars) to accomplish. Use of Human Botulism Immune Globulin to treat patients with infant botulism has resulted thus far in more than 30 years of avoided hospital stay and more than $50 mill

Embedding the public voice in clinical trials: developing public-informed training for patient data research.

BACKGROUND: The use of health systems data (HSD) such as patient records and prescriptions is expanding within clinical trials to improve efficiency, reduce participant burden, and enhance real‑world relevance. However, challenges remain around governance, data quality, transparency and public trust, echoed through discussions in this project. While Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement is increasingly embedded in trial design, involvement in methodological and data‑focused areas remains limited. Ensuring that HSD trial training for researchers and public reflects public perspectives i

From Misinformation to Meaningful Engagement: A Methodological Framework for Audiovisual Cancer Education in Low-Resource Settings.

Patient education in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is increasingly challenged by declining engagement with written materials and widespread exposure to misinformation on social media. At a comprehensive cancer center in Egypt, a needs assessment identified a high prevalence of misconceptions and minimal reliance on healthcare professionals as information sources. This paper describes a reproducible methodology for developing and implementing culturally adapted audiovisual breast cancer education delivered in colloquial Egyptian dialect, supported by multidisciplinary scientific gove

Information Pathways and Voids in Critical German Online Communities During the COVID-19 Vaccination Discourse: Cross-Platform and Mixed Methods Analysis.

BACKGROUND: In Germany, the messaging app Telegram (Telegram FZ-LLC) served as a tool to organize protests against public health measures during the COVID-19 pandemic. A community of diverse groups formed around these protests, which used Telegram to discuss and share views outside of the general public discourse and mainstream information ecosystem. This increasingly included conspiracy theories and extremist content, propagated by sources that opposed the mainstream positions of the government and traditional media. While the use of such sources has been thoroughly investigated, the role of

Elder mistreatment and the Elder Justice Act.

Elder mistreatment is unrecognized, hidden, and underreported. Studies show that health professionals, nurses among them, are largely unaware of the various forms of elder mistreatment that take place and of the proper course of action to pursue when mistreatment is suspected. In this article, we describe elder mistreatment policies, examining them in the light of the United States national elder abuse policies with a focus on important provisions of the Elder Justice Act. Next, we review the various types of abuse, the identification of abuse, and the nurses role in addressing elder mistreatm

Meeting health care needs of women experiencing complications of miscarriage and unsafe abortion: USAID's postabortion care program.

Each year, an estimated 210 million women become pregnant. Worldwide, more than one fourth of these pregnancies will end in abortion or an unplanned birth. While many abortions may result from the desire to delay or avoid pregnancy, 15% to 20% of pregnancies will end in miscarriage or stillbirth with some causative agents being malaria, HIV/AIDS, and physical violence. Postabortion care (PAC) is needed to provide treatment for complications caused by incomplete or spontaneous abortion and critical family planning counseling and services to prevent future unplanned pregnancies that may result i

National expenditure on health research in South Africa: How has the landscape changed in the past decade?

BACKGROUND: Over the past 18 years, the South African (SA) Ministry of Health has committed to allocate 2% of the national health budget to research, while the National Health Research Policy (2001) proposed that the health research budget should be 2% of total public sector health expenditure. A review was conducted by the National Health Research Committee (NHRC) in 2014 to determine whether these goals had been met, using available data up to 2009/10. It revealed that public sector health research funding remained below 2% of the national health budget, supporting the perception of reduced

Early Surveillance and Public Health Emergency Responses Between Novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 and Avian Influenza in China: A Case-Comparison Study.

Background: Since the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been a worldwide pandemic, the early surveillance and public health emergency disposal are considered crucial to curb this emerging infectious disease. However, studies of COVID-19 on this topic in China are relatively few. Methods: A case-comparison study was conducted using a set of six key time nodes to form a reference framework for evaluating early surveillance and public health emergency disposal between H7N9 avian influenza (2013) in Shanghai and COVID-19 in Wuhan, China. Findings: A report to the local Center for Disease Co

40-years of Lake Urmia restoration research: Review, synthesis and next steps.

Public concern over environmental issues such as ecosystem degradation is high. However, restoring coupled human-natural systems requires integration across many science, technology, engineering, management, and governance topics that are presently fragmented. Here, we synthesized 544 peer-reviewed articles published through September 2020 on the desiccation and nascent recovery of Lake Urmia in northwest Iran. We answered nine questions of scientific and popular interest about causes, impacts, stabilization, recovery, and next steps. We find: (1) Expansion of irrigated agriculture, dam constr
