Complicated grief is a newly defined and distinctive psychiatric disorder that occurs in response to a significant loss through death. New findings suggest that survivors who were close to the deceased are at heightened risk for complicated grief. Little is known about whether close kinship (spouses, parents, children, siblings, vs. in-laws, aunts/uncles, nieces/nephews, friends, or coworkers) to a suicide victim also represents a heightened risk for complicated grief. Assessing for complicated grief is important, especially with survivors of suicide, because of the potential for associated he…

We studied 46 women who had an ultrasound diagnosis of a lethal fetal anomaly (gestational age > or = 24 weeks). Shortly after the diagnosis, 45% of these 46 women showed severe psychological instability established by a consensus diagnosis. Three months later, this percentage had diminished significantly to 22%. The total GHQ-28 score revealed that after 4 years, 11 out of the 29 remaining participants (38%) had a score of 5 or more, which indicated a clinically significant degree of general psychological distress. Depression and despair measured with the Perinatal Grief scale, did not decrea…

We describe a 23-year-old woman with erotomania as a symptom of complicated grief. The delusional disorder emerged after a breakup with her partner, during a period of complicated grief following the unexpected loss of her twin brother. The delusion potentially functioned as a protection against a recurrent depressive disorder. Treatment usually consists of starting psychopharmaceuticals, however, often with limited results. Therefore, psychotherapeutic treatment is also important because an erotomanic delusion often arises from feelings of rejection, loneliness or worthlessness. Erotomania ha…

Anger, under any circumstances, is difficult to experience and understand. When associated with grief, anger seems startling and somewhat inappropriate. Yet the failure to recognize and the inability to work with angry feelings may compromise and inhibit the necessary grieving process. If not confronted directly, anger emerges in a variety of disguises such as disabling illness, maladaptive behavior, and chronic unhappiness. Using numerous case examples, the authors address the role of anger in the grieving process.

BACKGROUND: The death of a child causes severe, disruptive grief. Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) was formally adopted as a diagnosis in DSM-5-TR in 2022. The Parent Bereavement Questionnaire (PBQ), a bereavement measure developed specifically for parents, was validated prior to these criteria, and its performance under current diagnostic standards is unknown.
METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of 244 mothers (>12 months post-loss) whose infants died suddenly and unexpectedly from SIDS or unascertained causes, recruited through a large-scale, multi-center prospective cohort study that …

Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) is a new diagnostic category included in global diagnostic classification systems for mental disorders. However, PGD can only be diagnosed if the severity and duration exceed socio-cultural norms. Here, we present a new supplementary module to the DSM-5 Cultural Formulation Interview: the Bereavement and Grief Cultural Formulation Interview (BG-CFI). The BG-CFI was developed to help clinicians provide a culturally informed diagnosis and guide treatment planning. We investigated the feasibility, acceptability, and clinical utility of the BG-CFI. Two participant gro…

BACKGROUND: Bereavement can result in severe mental health problems, including persistent, severe and disabling grief symptoms, termed complicated grief. Grief rumination (i.e., repetitive thought about the causes and consequences of the loss) is a malleable cognitive risk-factor in adjustment to bereavement. The Utrecht Grief Rumination Scale (UGRS) was recently developed to assess grief rumination. The present study aimed to develop and validate a German version of the UGRS.
METHODS: An online survey including measures of demographic and loss-related variables, grief rumination (UGRS), depr…

Bereavement research is hampered conceptually by confounding of grief and depression, methodologically by a lack of generally agreed-upon measures. Therefore we developed the Munich Grief Scale (MGS) based on the Perinatal Grief Scale (PGS, Potvin et al. 1989) and results from a previous study. Validation included comparisons with standardized self-report scales of depression, anxiety and physical symptoms. It was based on a follow-up study of 125 patients who had miscarried and 3 comparison groups who either suffered from a miscarriage or a stillbirth. Self-reports were compared to expert rat…

ABSTRACTAlthough interest on older homelessness is gaining momentum, little research has considered the experiences of first-time homelessness from the perspective of older adults themselves. This constructivist grounded-theory study addresses this gap by exploring how societal perceptions of homelessness and aging shape access to housing, services, and perceptions of self for 15 older adults residing in emergency homeless shelters in Montreal, (Quebec, Canada). Findings revealed that homelessness evoked a grief response characterized by shock, despair, anger, and in some cases, relief. Connec…

BACKGROUND: Chinese parents who have lost their only child, commonly referred to as Shidu parents, are at heightened risk for prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Rumination has been identified as a potential mechanism underlying PGD, yet its content and functions in this population remain poorly understood. This study aimed to explore the dimensions and effects of grief rumination among Shidu parents through a qualitative interview design.
METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 Shidu parents, and the data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis.
RESULTS: Five dimensio…

BACKGROUND: Perinatal grief is the experience or emotions of parents following the loss of an infant by miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal loss, or elective termination for fetal anomalies.
AIM: We aimed to translate and adapt the Perinatal Grief Scale (PGS) into Hindi and evaluate its psychometric properties in a sample of women who had recently experienced a stillbirth.
METHOD: The PGS was translated and adapted into Hindi following the process of translation and adaptation recommended by the World Health Organization. Internal consistency reliability was assessed by calculating Cronbach's …

An increasing number of data has been recently focused on recognizing pathological grief reactions and on the distinction from physiological processes. Particularly, several studies have supported Complicated Grief (CG) as an independent disorder, in order to define the failure of spontaneous physiological mourning resolution. Upon these studies, the latest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) with the name of "Persistent Complex Bereavement Disorder". This article aims at retracing the history of clinical research about the physiological and psychopatho…

BACKGROUND: Although losses are important consequences of disasters, few epidemiological studies of disasters have assessed complicated grief (CG) and none assessed CG associated with losses other than death of loved one.
METHODS: Data come from the baseline survey of the Hurricane Katrina Community Advisory Group, a representative sample of 3,088 residents of the areas directly affected by Hurricane Katrina. A brief screen for CG was included containing four items consistent with the proposed DSM-V criteria for a diagnosis of bereavement-related adjustment disorder.
RESULTS: Fifty-eight and…

OBJECTIVE: Some prolonged and turbulent grief reactions include symptoms that differ from the DSM-IV criteria for major depressive disorder. The authors investigated a new diagnosis that would include these symptoms.
METHOD: They developed observer-based definitions of 30 symptoms noted clinically in previous longitudinal interviews of bereaved persons and then designed a plan to investigate whether any combination of these would serve as criteria for a possible new diagnosis of complicated grief disorder. Using a structured diagnostic interview, they assessed 70 subjects whose spouses had di…
