The subparietal and parietooccipital sulci: an anatomical study.

The subparietal and parietooccipital sulci are both located on the medial surface of the brain. Both of these sulci reveal significant variability in pattern and complexity. Both subparietal and parietooccipital sulci play an important role as surgical landmarks using posterior interhemispheric parietooccipital approach to lesions located adjacent to the ventricular trigon deep to the cingulate gyrus. The aim of this study is to analyze variations in the patterns of the subparietal and parietooccipital sulci and to emphasize their surgical importance. Fifty-six formalin-fixed cadaveric cerebra

Inflammatory bowel disease: perspectives from cingulate cortex in the first brain.

The article by Agostini et al. (2013) in this issue of Neurogastroenterology and Motility evaluated patients with Crohn's disease (CD) for volumetric changes throughout the brain. They observed decreased gray matter volumes in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and anterior midcingulate cortex (aMCC) and disease duration was negatively correlated with volumes in subgenual anterior cingulate (sACC), posterior MCC (pMCC), ventral posterior cingulate (vPCC), and parahippocampal cortices. As all patients were in remission and suffered from ongoing abdominal pain, this study provides a critical link be

Holoprosencephaly manifesting with fusion of the gyri cinguli.

In this paper we report a 7-month-old boy with lobar holoprosencephaly in whom midline interhemispheric fusion occurred between thickened gyri cinguli of both hemispheres at the middle frontal region. This anomaly appears to be a variation of a recently recognized type of holoprosencephaly associated with midline interhemispheric fusion and atypical callosal dysgenesis. In contrast to the previously reported a few cases, in our patient the corpus callosum was thinned but intact. In addition, the condition was associated with diffuse cortical dysplasia. The malformations in this patient is of i

Human cingulate cortex: surface features, flat maps, and cytoarchitecture.

The surface morphology and cytoarchitecture of human cingulate cortex was evaluated in the brains of 27 neurologically intact individuals. Variations in surface features included a single cingulate sulcus (CS) with or without segmentation or double parallel sulci with or without segmentation. The single CS was deeper (9.7 +/- 0.81 mm) than in cases with double parallel sulci (7.5 +/- 0.48 mm). There were dimples parallel to the CS in anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and anastomoses between the CS and the superior CS. Flat maps of the medial cortical surface were made in a two-stage reconstructi

Mapping causal links between prefrontal cortical regions and intra-individual behavioral variability.

Intra-individual behavioral variability is significantly heightened by aging or neuropsychological disorders, however it is unknown which brain regions are causally linked to such variabilities. We examine response time (RT) variability in 21 macaque monkeys performing a rule-guided decision-making task. In monkeys with selective-bilateral lesions in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) or in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, cognitive flexibility is impaired, but the RT variability is significantly diminished. Bilateral lesions within the frontopolar cortex or within the mid-dorsolateral pre

Evidence Accumulation and Neural Correlates of Uncertainty in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Decision making is frequently associated with risk taking under uncertainty. Elevated intolerance of uncertainty is suggested to be a critical feature of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, impairments of latent constructs of uncertainty processing and its neural correlates remain unclear in OCD. METHODS: In 83 participants (24 OCD patients treated with capsulotomy, 28 OCD control participants, and 31 healthy control participants), we performed magnetic resonance imaging using a card gambling task in which participants made decisions whether to bet or not that the next c

The role of the anterior cingulate cortex in aggression and impulsivity.

Aggression is a complex social behavior that evolved in the context of defending a territory, fighting for limited resources, and competing for mates and protection. Although aggression considered as a negative or undesirable emotion is an essential part of many species' repertoire of social behaviors. For humans, the motivations, actions, and limits of aggressive acts are not always clear. However, uncontrolled aggression may have destructive consequences, and it develops inappropriately into violence. At the neural level, several studies demonstrated that aggression is related to cortical ab

First-in-human prediction of chronic pain state using intracranial neural biomarkers.

Chronic pain syndromes are often refractory to treatment and cause substantial suffering and disability. Pain severity is often measured through subjective report, while objective biomarkers that may guide diagnosis and treatment are lacking. Also, which brain activity underlies chronic pain on clinically relevant timescales, or how this relates to acute pain, remains unclear. Here four individuals with refractory neuropathic pain were implanted with chronic intracranial electrodes in the anterior cingulate cortex and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC). Participants reported pain metrics coincident wi

Altered functional connectivity in anterior cingulate cortex subregions in treatment-resistant schizophrenia patients.

BACKGROUND: The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) plays a key role in motor control, attention, and cognitive control. It is well established that schizophrenia is associated with impaired functional connectivity (FC) of the ACC pathway. So far, however, there has been little discussion about the ACC subregions function in patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS). AIM: This study aims to characterize resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) profiles of ACC subregions in patients with TRS. The association between these FC and clinical symptoms, neurocognitive function, and grey

Hemodynamic activity in the limbic system predicts reoffending in women.

Previous research (Aharoni et al., 2013, 2014) found that hemodynamic activity in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) during error monitoring predicted non-violent felony rearrest in men released from prison. This article reports an extension of the Aharoni et al. (2013, 2014) model in a sample of women released from state prison (n = 248). Replicating aspects of prior work, error monitoring activity in the dACC, as well as psychopathy scores and age at release, predicted non-violent felony rearrest in women. Sex differences in the directionality of dACC activity were observed-high err

The cingulate oculomotor cortex.

Knowledge about the relevance and extent of human eye movement control in the cingulate cortex to date is very limited. Experiments in non-human primates brought about evidence for a potentially central role of the dorsal bank of the cingulate sulcus in saccadic eye movements. In humans, a putative cingulate eye field (CEF) in the same region has been proposed; however, its function and location still remain controversial. Another area in the posterior cingulate cortex, the cingulate sulcus visual area (CSv), has been shown to respond to visual motion cues and also ocular motor tasks. In this

Coordinated activities of retrosplenial ensembles during resting-state encode spatial landmarks.

The brain likely uses offline periods to consolidate recent memories. One hypothesis holds that the hippocampal output provides a unique, global linking or 'index' code for each memory, and that this code is stored in the cortex in association with locally encoded attributes of each memory. Activation of the index code is hypothesized to evoke coordinated memory trace reactivation thus facilitating consolidation. Retrosplenial cortex (RSC) is a major recipient of hippocampal outflow and we have described populations of neurons there with sparse and orthogonal coding characteristics that resemb

Fatal familial insomnia: a model disease in sleep physiopathology.

Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI) is characterized by loss of sleep, oneiric stupor with autonomic/motor hyperactivity and somato-motor abnormalities (pyramidal signs, myoclonus, dysarthria/dysphagia, ataxia). Positon emission tomography (PET) disclosed thalamic hypometabolism and milder involvement of the cortex; neuropathology severe neuronal loss in the thalamic nuclei variably affecting the caudate, gyrus cinguli and fronto-temporal cortices. Genetic analysis disclosed a mutation in the PRNP gene and FFI was transmitted to experimental animals, thus classifying FFI within the prion diseases. R

Subcortical and Cortical Regions of Amyloid-β Pathology Measured by 11C-PiB PET Are Differentially Associated with Cognitive Functions and Stages of Disease in Memory Clinic Patients.

BACKGROUND: The effect of regional brain amyloid-β (Aβ) pathology on specific cognitive functions is incompletely known. OBJECTIVE: The relationship between Aβ and cognitive functions was investigated in this cross-sectional multicenter study of memory clinic patients. METHODS: The participants were patients diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease (AD, n = 83), mild cognitive impairment (MCI, n = 60), and healthy controls (HC, n = 32), who had been scanned by 11C-PiB PET in 13 brain regions of both hemispheres and who had been assessed by cognitive tests covering seven domains. RESULTS: Hierarch

Transcranial focused ultrasound for emotion regulation: A systematic review and quantitative summary of human studies.

BACKGROUND: Emotion regulation is a core transdiagnostic process in mood, anxiety, and stress-related disorders. While existing non-invasive brain stimulation approaches, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), can modulate affective networks, their clinical use is limited by restricted spatial precision and depth penetration. Transcranial focused ultrasound stimulation (tFUS) offers submillimeter focality and access to both cortical and deep subcortical structures, making it a promising tool for affective neuromodulation. METHODS: W

Disentangling frontal-striatal contributions to exploration.

In this issue of Neuron, Treuting et al.1 present a dissociation between the way anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and striatum use prediction errors to shape exploration in complementary ways, with ACC tracking prediction errors to reduce uncertainty regarding available choices and striatum using prediction errors to amplify value estimates.

Equalizing transcallosal inhibition in the mouse anterior cingulate mitigates visuospatial neglect.

A recent study by Wang and colleagues disentangled a transcallosal inhibitory circuit in mouse anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), which modulates excitatory ipsilateral tonus and contralateral inhibition by exciting contralateral parvalbumin-positive (PV+) interneurons. The authors conclude that the identified circuit mediates interhemispheric balance for visuospatial attention and provides top-down modulation of visual cortices.
