Sweet's syndrome (acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis) and erythema nodosum are reactive dermatoses whose pathogenesis is currently undefined. Although there are several associated conditions that both of these disorders have in common, the appearance of Sweet's syndrome and erythema nodosum in the same person is rare. Only 8 individuals with biopsy confirmed lesions of both dermatoses were described in the world literature. We describe a 30-year-old woman with biopsy confirmed lesions of Sweet's syndrome on her hand and erythema nodosum on her legs. She had been taking an oral contraceptive

Dermatomyositis (DM) is an autoimmune connective tissue disease that is included in the idiopathic inflammatory myopathies. Cutaneous manifestations are a prominent part of the condition: some skin signs in DM are common to most patients, while other signs are encountered infrequently. A number of features are pathognomic for DM. The demonstration of myositis-specific antibodies (MSAs) in DM has extended the ability to define phenotypic subgroups. It appears that the presence of certain MSAs confers susceptibility to specific clinical features, an association which reveals a serotype-phenotype

This study compared the effects of complex training (CT) versus resistance training (RT) on agility, strength and power in elite modern pentathletes during precompetition periods. Ten male modern pentathletes from the Chinese national team participated. They first completed the RT mesocycles (eight weeks), followed by the CT mesocycles (eight weeks), with detraining microcycle (two weeks) in between for rest. Agility (three-cone test, TCT), strength (one-repetition maximum back squat, 1RM-BS; isometric mid-thigh pull peak force, IMTP), and power (counter-movement jump, CMJ; reaction strength i

Background and Objectives: Allergy to dust mites (HDMs) plays an important role in atopic dermatitis (AD). However, the role of this allergy in other dermatoses is little known. The aim of this study was to assess hypersensitivity to HDMs in patients with AD or hand disease using the basophil activation test. Material and Methods: A total of 52 patients with AD, 57 with hand eczema disease, and 68 healthy volunteers qualified for this study. Diagnosis was based on the Hanifin and Rajka criteria, dermatological assessment, and exclusion of other dermatoses. The participants underwent skin prick

108 cases were evaluated. It was stated that they were mostly caused by an exposure to allergic effects of industrial allergens: metal compounds, epoxides, paragroup compounds, turpentine, formalin and rubber components. Location and clinical picture of dermatoses constitute mainly dermatitis and contact eczema on the skin of hands. The cases referred mainly to the men employed in building, chemical, textile and metal industries. Opening a center performing allergic tests with industrial allergents, which at the same time could determine their occurrence in work environment, provides the basic

Introduction Palmoplantar dermatoses are skin diseases affecting specifically palms and soles is a common clinical entity encountered by dermatologists. This may cause discomfort and embarrassment to the patients because its location interferes significantly with normal day-to-day activities. Palmoplantar dermatosis affects a heterogeneous population, ranging from bare-handed workers in the slaughterhouse to medical personnel wearing gloves in the operating room. The present study endeavors to classify palmoplantar dermatoses based on their morphology and the clinical distribution pattern. Mat

Asymptomatic light brown or tannish-gray macules are seen on palms and/or soles of black patients, and occasionally on the volar surfaces of whites. They may be mistaken for lesions of secondary syphilis or other postinflammatory hyperpigmented dermatoses. Histologic examination of 14 specimens obtained at necropsy showed purely epidermal hyperpigmentation of all epidermal layers; or (3) melanin restricted to large dendritic melanocytes without appreciable transfer to keratinocytes. The number of melanocytes was not significantly increased, and with one exception, there were no nevus cells. Th

Palmoplantar involvement in lichen planus is rare and often does not have the classically described clinical morphology, making it difficult to establish the diagnosis. We report a case in which asymptomatic solitary hyperpigmented patches with mild hyperkeratosis on the palms were the sole manifestation of lichen planus. Histopathology confirmed our diagnosis.

The etiologic role of Malassezia furfur in onychomycosis is a contentious diagnostic problem because its keratinolytic ability has never been verified. This case report describes the isolation of M. furfur from the infected nails of a child clinically diagnosed with onychomycosis, and discusses the role of this organism as an etiologic agent/colonizer. The patient presented with subungual hyperkeratosis and onycholysis without associated paronychia. Budding yeast cells compatible with M. furfur were repeatedly demonstrated in KOH wet mounts of damaged nails, histopathology of hematoxylin and e

Pustulosis palmaris et plantaris may be associated with a number of articular diseases. Known to be present in Fiessinger-Leroy-Reiter syndrome and psoriasis arthropatica, this skin disease has been classified by Japanese authors as a new nosological entity: pustular osteo-arthritis. Pustulosis palmaris et plantaris seems to represent a meeting point for axial rheumatisms close to ankylozing spondylitis.

Acrokerato-elastoidosis described by Costa is characterized by numerous little keratotic points and translucent horny wheals on the dorsal aspect of hands and (or) feets. The ultrastructural study shows lesions of the elastic tissue which is very rarefied with an abnormal structure, but also demonstrates alterations of the fibroblasts that contain dense granules at the periphery of their cytoplasm without elastic extracellular fibers, suggesting a trouble in the secretion or the excretion of the elastic material.

A patient with granuloma faciale had multiple lesions on the face and one lesion on the dorsal surface of one hand. This case adds a clinical parallel to the recognized histological parallel between granuloma faciale and erythema elevatum diutinum.

BACKGROUND: Palmoplantar dermatoses are common. They can be both functionally debilitating and markedly stigmatize the patient because they are so visible. Dermatoses on the hands and feet often go along with palmoplantar hyperkeratosis. Such palmoplantar keratoses (PPK) can be classified into acquired (non-hereditary) and hereditary (monogenetic) PPK.
OBJECTIVES: A considerable proportion of PPK develop on the grounds of gene defects. As these diseases constitute a heterogeneous group of quite uncommon single entities, the treating physician must know when to entertain the diagnosis of a her

Aquagenic wrinkling of the palms (AWP) is a rare dermatological disease characterized by development of rapid and excessive wrinkling and oedema of the palms and transient whitish or yellowish papules without erythema on the palmar surfaces after immersion in water. This phenomenon can be accompanied by pain and/or pruritus. The most common treatment of AWP involves aluminium-based topicals. This article discusses the associations, pathological mechanisms and treatment options of AWP.
