[Assessment of the performance of Pastoral de Criança, a health support group, in promoting child survival and health education in Criciúma,a city in southern Brazil].

Thousands of children younger than 5 years of age still die all over the world as a result of preventable diseases. Community intervention measures emphasizing primary health and nutritional care have been identified as one of the solutions to this problem. This article describes a population-based cross-sectional study of the Pastoral da Criança, a Roman Catholic health support group in Brazil. The study assesses whether mothers and children assisted by the Pastoral present better health indicators and have a better knowledge of basic child survival actions than non-assisted mothers and child

Exploring national support mechanisms for European reference network centres.

Integrating European Reference Networks (ERNs) into national health systems is crucial for rare disease care but remains challenging due to inconsistent support structures across countries. This study used a 2024-2025 multi-stakeholder survey of ERN clinical centre leads, hospital administrators, and national health authorities (JARDIN Joint Action, Work Package 9) to evaluate national support for ERN centres across six domains: staffing, education, formal recognition, funding, quality assurance, and strategic planning. Survey results revealed inconsistent national legal frameworks for recogni

Target prioritization and strategy selection for active case-finding of pulmonary tuberculosis: a tool to support country-level project planning.

BACKGROUND: Despite the progress made in the past decade, tuberculosis (TB) control still faces significant challenges. In many countries with declining TB incidence, the disease tends to concentrate in vulnerable populations that often have limited access to health care. In light of the limitations of the current case-finding approach and the global urgency to improve case detection, active case-finding (ACF) has been suggested as an important complementary strategy to accelerate tuberculosis control especially among high-risk populations. The present exercise aims to develop a model that can

Revealing the Role of Social Support on Cognitive Deficits in Fibromyalgia Syndrome.

Despite the relevance of cognitive deficits in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and the attempts to elucidate the influence of the disorder symptoms in the cognitive decline reported by patients, no studies have explored the specific role of social support on cognition in FMS. Social support has been shown to be an essential modulator factor on cognitive performance in other diseases. Sixty-four women with FMS and 32 healthy women participated in the study and completed questionnaires pertaining to anxiety, depression, fatigue, insomnia, clinical pain, and social support, along with a neuropsycholo

Norway at ICPD+10: international assistance for reproductive health does not reflect domestic policies.

Norway has a long history of good reproductive health care, with some of the world's best reproductive health indicators. Early reduction of maternal mortality, good services for abortion, contraception and sexually transmitted diseases, a low rate of adolescent pregnancies and a low number people with HIV are examples, achieved through an integrated, publicly provided and funded health care package. Official Norwegian development assistance started in 1952. Emphasis on family planning assistance dates back to 1966, making Norway one of the most consistent donors to family planning and reprodu

Stakeholder perceptions of a total market approach to family planning in Viet Nam.

Viet Nam has high modern contraceptive prevalence (68%), with most services received through the public sector. As the country transitions to middle-income status, Viet Nam's donors have ceased donations of contraceptive supplies, causing a large projected shortfall in the family planning budget. In response, the Ministry of Health has decided to prioritize free or subsidized contraceptives for poor and vulnerable groups, while enhancing social marketing and sales of contraceptives in the free market. To support planning for this "total market approach", a descriptive exploratory study was con

Managing 'shades of grey': a focus group study exploring community-dwellers' views on advance care planning in older people.

BACKGROUND: Community-dwelling consumers of healthcare are increasing, many aging with life-limiting conditions and deteriorating cognition. However, few have had advance care planning discussions or completed documentation to ensure future care preferences are acted upon. This study examines the awareness, attitudes, and experiences of advance care planning amongst older people and unrelated offspring/caregivers of older people residing in the community. METHODS: Qualitative descriptive research, which included focus groups with older people (55+ years) and older people's offspring/caregiver

Documentation of person-centred health plans for patients with acute coronary syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Personalised care planning is argued for but there is a need to know more about what the plans actually contain. AIM: To describe the content of person-centred health, plans documented at three healthcare levels for patients with acute coronary syndrome. DESIGN: Patients with acute coronary syndrome aged under 75 years and admitted to two coronary care units at a university hospital were enrolled in the study. This retrospective descriptive study documented 89 person-centred health plans at three healthcare levels: hospital, outpatient and primary care. In total, 267 health plans

Mental health help-seeking among individuals with breast cancer: A qualitative exploration of women's and healthcare practitioners' perspectives.

Individuals with breast cancer (BC) experience significant psychological distress, yet their utilization of mental health services remains low. This study identified key factors influencing help-seeking behavior through integrated Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Health Belief Model (HBM) frameworks. We conducted in-depth interviews (IDIs) with eight BC patients and nominal group technique (NGT) with six health professionals, followed by Fuzzy Delphi Method (FDM) to assess expert consensus. The IDIs revealed that the individuals with BC recognized the value of professional psychological su

Prevalence and Applications of interRAI Scales and Algorithms for Children and Youth Across Populations and Care Settings.

Rising mental health needs among children and youth underscore the importance of reliable, evidence-informed data to support effective service planning and policy development. The interRAI Child and Youth Mental Health (ChYMH) and Child and Youth Mental Health-Developmental Disabilities (ChYMH-DD) assessments provide standardized information across clinical, functional, and social aspects to support care planning and service delivery. This study highlights common scales and algorithms embedded within the ChYMH and ChYMH-DD and illustrates their prevalence across instruments and settings. Preva

The psychosocial and neuropsychiatric sequelae of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and related disorders.

The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and its related conditions are a public health problem of unprecedented proportions due to the debilitating and fatal nature of the disease, the sociocultural implications related to contagion, and its initial appearance in certain socially stigmatized groups. The ability of patients to tolerate the consequences of the disease depends on their psychological ability to cope based on emotional strength and the availability of social support. The psychological and social impact of AIDS may result in psychiatric symptoms similar to those seen in other

Factors Associated With Advance Care Planning and Informal Family Discussions About Future Care in a UK Cohort of People With Dementia and Their Carers From the Observational DETERMIND Study.

Advance care planning is a crucial element of high-quality, person-centred end-of-life care for people with dementia; however, levels have remained persistently low. Recent debates have emphasised informal conversations within families. Understanding factors associated with advance care planning and informal conversations may help target support more effectively. Data were collected in face-to-face interviews with 420 dyads of people with dementia and their carers, within 18 months of diagnosis, as part of the observational DETERMIND cohort study. Cross-sectional multivariable logistic regress

Advance care planning for patients with advanced multiple long-term conditions: a qualitative thematic analysis of health and social care professionals' perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Advance care planning helps people plan for and communicate preferences about future care, including when decision-making capacity is lost. For people living with advanced multiple long-term conditions, advance care planning is challenging because decline may be unrecognised, responsibility is diffused across condition-specific services, and care is fragmented. AIM: To explore health and social care professionals' perspectives on challenges and best practices in advance care planning for people with advanced multiple long-term conditions, and to generate recommendations for improv

Understanding community psychosocial needs after disasters: implications for mental health services.

The psychosocial impact of disasters has attracted increasing attention. There is little consensus, however, about what priorities should be pursued in relation to mental health interventions, with most controversy surrounding the relevance of traumatic stress to mental health. The present overview suggests that acute traumatic stress may be a normative response to life threat which tends to subside once conditions of safety are established. At the same time, there is a residual minority of survivors who will continue to experience chronic posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and their needs c

A multidisciplinary motorcycle safety initiative.

Motorcycle registrations are on the rise in the United States, especially among riders over 40 years of age. While motorcycle popularity has been increasing, so have injuries and fatalities. Unfortunately, motorcycle crashes have been increasing at a disproportionately high rate. In 2007, motorcycle fatalities reached the highest level since the Department of Transportation began collecting data in 1975. Because of the increasing number of motorcycle crashes in Ohio and Central Ohio, a multidisciplinary team consisting of the Grant Medical Center's trauma program, Franklin County Safe Communit

A Critical Gap in Addressing Mental Health in Heat-Health Action Plans Worldwide.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Extreme heat is associated with mental health conditions such as suicide, anxiety, and substance use disorders. However, the integration of mental health in heat-health planning remains limited and no comprehensive assessment of its inclusion exists to date. This review aims to (1) identify and categorize mental health-related content in heat-health action plans globally; and (2) analyze the gaps in included interventions related to extreme heat and mental health. RECENT FINDINGS: A review of 83 heat-health action plans from 24 countries revealed that while 75.9% of plans m
