Biofeedback with heart sounds following a traumatic event.

BACKGROUND: Some countries have experienced and may continue to experience severe devastation due to wars, epidemics, earthquakes, and other natural catastrophes. When individuals are exposed to specific psychological or physical traumas, they can develop stress-related disorders, which can lead to irreversible changes in the autonomic nervous system and the development of cardiovascular disorders. When subjected to a new stress test, traumatized participants or those previously exposed to trauma may show more pronounced behavioral changes, intolerance, and greater fatigue responses than befor

Listening to heart sounds through the pressure waveform.

Non-invasive diagnostic modalities are integral to cardiovascular care; however, current systems primarily measure peripheral pressure, limiting the breadth of cardiovascular prognostication. We report a novel approach for extracting left side heart sounds using a brachial cuff device. The technique leverages brachial cuff device enhanced signal resolution to capture pressure fluctuations generated by cardiohemic system vibrations, the sound pressure waveform. We analyze left heart catheterization data alongside simultaneous brachial cuff device measurements to correlate sound pressure wavefor…

Recorded heart sounds for identification of ventricular tachycardia.

BACKGROUND: The ECG discrimination of ventricular tachycardia (VT) vs. supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) is both important and often difficult. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that recorded digital cardiac acoustical data reflect hemodynamic changes that can be used for VT detection. METHODS: We studied 57 subjects (42 males, mean age 57, range 24-83 years) who had undergone electrophysiological testing for known and suspected cardiac arrhythmias. Acoustic cardiography (Audicor, Inovise Medical, Inc.) was performed during each subject's electrophysiological study. We evaluated the ab

Separation of heart sounds and heart murmurs by Hilbert transform envelogram.

Heart sounds and murmurs provide crucial diagnosis information for several heart diseases such as natural or prosthetic valve dysfunction and heart failure. Many pathological conditions of the cardiovascular system cause murmurs and aberrations in heart sounds. Phonocardiography provides the clinician with a complementary tool to record the heart sounds heard during auscultation. The advancement of intra-cardiac phonocardiography, combined with modern digital processing techniques, has strongly renewed researchers' interest in studying heart sounds and murmurs. This paper presents an algorithm…
