Pharmacotherapy of helminth infection.

BACKGROUND: In the first decade of the 21st century, worm infections are still very common, especially--but not exclusively--in the developi … and ivermectin are the most important anthelmintics available, easy to use and active against most helminths. Diethylcarbamazine is used in loasis and lymphatic filariasis. Doxycycline can eliminate endosymbiotic bacteria of certain filariae, but its place in therapy needs to be further defined. In the treatment of cystic hydatid disease, a better, non-cau …

Abnormal Helminth Egg Development, Strange Morphology, and the Identification of Intestinal Helminth Infections.

Occasionally, abnormal forms of parasitic helminth eggs are detected during routine diagnostics. This finding can prove problematic in diagnosis because morphologic analysis based on tightly defined measurements is the primary method used to identify the infecting species and molecular confirmation of species is not always feasible. We describe instances of malformed nematode eggs (primarily from members of the superfamily Ascaridoidea) from human clinical practice and experimental trials on animals. On the basis of our observations and historical literature, we propose that unusual developmen

Regulation of host metabolic health by parasitic helminths.

Obesity is a worldwide pandemic and major risk factor for the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). T2D requir … responses that suppress inflammation and promote insulin sensitivity. In this review, the roles of helminths in counteracting MetS, and prospects for harnessing these protective mechanisms for the development of novel anti-diabetes drugs are discussed.

Wriggly woes: Helminths stirring up T cell trouble.

Understanding determinants of immune response variation is central to developing treatment options. Even et al. show that naive CD4+ T cell transcriptional heterogeneity is altered by helminth infection leading to impaired immune responses independent of commensals.

Gastrointestinal helminths of opossums (Mammalia: Didelphidae) from Bolivia.

A total of 32 taxa of helminths were recovered from 52 individuals corresponding to 17 species of didelphiomorph marsupials collected across Bolivia. From these, 20 taxa are registered for the first time in this landlocked South American country, including the cestode Mathevotaenia bivittata, and the nematodes Moennigia sp., Travassostrongylus callis, Viannaia didelphis, V. hamata, V. metachirops, V. minispicula, V. philanderi, V. simplicispicula, V. skrjabini, V. viannai, Cruzia tentaculata, Monodelphoxyuris dollmeiri, Neohilgertia venusti, Pterygodermatites elegans, Pterygodermatites jeagers…

Dangerous liaisons: how helminths manipulate the intestinal epithelium.

Intestinal helminths remain highly pervasive throughout the animal kingdom by modulating multiple aspects of the host immune response. The intestinal epithelium functions as a physical barrier as well as a sentinel innate immune tissue with the ability to sense and respond to infectious agents. Although helminths form intimate interactions with the epithelium, comprehensive knowledge about host-helminth interactions at this dynamic interface is lacking. In addition, little is known about the ability of helminths to directly shape the fate of this barrier tissue. Here, we review the diverse pat…

Prevalence of zoonotic helminths in Italian house dogs.

INTRODUCTION: Dogs may act as potential sources of zoonotic parasites, e.g. intestinal helminths like Toxocara spp., Ancylostoma spp., Echinococcus spp. In particular circumstances, the environment contaminated by parasitic elements represents a source of infection for people and animals. The present study has evaluated the presence of zoonotic helminths in house dogs from central and north-eastern Italy. METHODOLOGY: Stool samples from 493 dogs were examined by a qualitative copromicroscopic technique and differences in prevalence of zoonotic parasites were statistically examined in relation…

Soil-Transmitted Helminths in Tropical Australia and Asia.

Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) infect 2 billion people worldwide including significant numbers in South-East Asia (SEA). In Australia, STH are of less concern; however, indigenous communities are endemic for STH, including Strongyloides stercoralis, as well as for serious clinical infections due to other helminths such as Toxocara spp. The zoonotic hookworm Ancylostoma ceylanicum is also present in Australia and SEA, and may contribute to human infections particularly among pet owners. High human immigration rates to Australia from SEA, which is highly endemic for STH Strongyloides and Toxoc…

Current status of soil-transmitted helminths in Vietnam.

This paper provides a review of surveys on soil-transmitted helminths that were done in Vietnam between 1990 and 2001. Prevalence estimates could be obtained for 29 of the 61 provinces. Extrapolating from this, it is estimated that 33.9 million people in Vietnam are infected with Ascaris (prevalence 44.4%), 17.6 million with Trichuris (prevalence 23.1%), and 21.8 million with hookworm (prevalence 28.6%). Prevalence of Ascaris and Trichuris showed a declining trend from the north to the south of the country. This is probably related to differences in climatic conditions. Hookworm prevalence is …

Ivermectin for human strongyloidiasis and other intestinal helminths.

Since ivermectin, a mixture of 2 closely related macrocyclic lactones, has proven highly effective against animal intestinal nematodes, trials were undertaken to determine its efficacy against human intestinal nematodes. We tested 110 patients with strongyloidiasis and 90 with enterobiasis; many had other intercurrent intestinal nematode infections. Stool examinations were done before and after patients were given a single dose of oral ivermectin capsules (50, 100, 150, or 200 micrograms/kg body wt); 55 recipients of 100 or 200 micrograms/kg doses received a second identical dose the next day.

The helminths of various antelope species from Natal.

Helminth parasites were collected from 2 bushbuck, Tragelaphus scriptus, 2 red duiker, Cephalophus natalensis, 1 oribi, Ourebia ourebi, and 4 reedbuck, Redunca arundinum, that died or were culled in various parts of Natal. One trematode genus, 1 cestode genus and 12 nematode species were recovered. Haemonchus contortus. Ostertagia harrisi, Trichostrongylus capricola, Trichostrongylus vitrinus, Cooperia rotundispiculum and Setaria scalprum are new parasite records for the red duiker. Trichostrongylus colubriformis is a new parasite record for the oribi and Longistrongylus schrenki, Trichostrong

[Intestinal helminths in the DDR district of Rostock].

The population of a rural municipality in the district of Rostock including the staff members of a research institute at that place, who daily go there from a nearby city, were examined helminthologically (as a whole 910 persons). 1.5% of these persons were affected by helminths. Comparative examinations with 407 animal breeders of other municipalities showed the same results (also 1.5%). The examination of seamen going to the trophics (1471 persons) showed other results: 3% were attacked. Foreigners from the tropics staying in the district of Rostock during the same period of time (426 person…

Biology of soil-transmitted helminths: the massive infection.

Soil-transmitted helminth infections when light-to-moderate usually are well tolerated, but heavy-to massive infections invariably cause dis … lities of the soil, and on the sorting action of rain which transports and concentrates the eggs of helminths in locations where survival and transmission are favored. The high frequency of heavy hookworm infection in southeastern United States and probably elsewhere may depend largely on the presence of feces-burying dung beetles. Human infection with soil …
