Newly developed serological methods for the detection of pili in the passive hemagglutination (PHA) test with the use of immunoglobulin erythrocytic diagnosticum and in the enzyme immunoassay (EIA) with the use of specific immunoglobulins labeled with horse radish peroxidase have been found to exceed the method of detecting pili, based on the determination of their hemagglutinating activity, in sensitivity and specificity. Besides, the PHA test and EIA have proved to be capable of detecting low molecular fragments of pili, obtained by sonication and having lost their hemagglutinating activity.

Three isolates of Moraxella bovis, recovered from cattle with signs of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis, were tested for autoagglutinating activity, hemagglutinating activity and pathogenicity in young calves. Only the autoagglutinating and hemagglutinating isolates were pathogenic in calves. Treatment of the pathogenic isolates with magnesium chloride eliminated their pathogenic effects.

We investigated to find whether the immune adherence hemagglutination (IAHA) test could be used for identification of group A coxsackieviruses (Cox. A). By using homogenate of suckling mouse torsos infected with each of nine prototype viruses (Cox. An antiglobulin hemagglutination test was developed for detection of antibody directed to Histoplasma capsulatum and Blastomyces dermatitidis. We describe a patient with hypothalamic diabetes insipidus who after 20 years became refractory to the effect of commercial vasopressin injection. Vasopressin antibodies were measured using a sensitive hemagglutination technique. Resistance was associated with a high titer of antibodies that disappeared once vasopressin therapy was withdrawn and the diabetes insipidus was controlled with chlorpropamide. The passive haemagglutination test in the diagnosis of syphilis was used with: 139 sera posing serological problems, 965 sera from subjects with syphilis at all stages of the disease and non-syphilitics. The percentages of agreement seen both in comparison of THPA with the TPI (94,5 p.cent) and the FTA abs test (97 p.cent) demonstrate its high degree of specificity and sensitivity.
