Hemodynamics and Drinking in the Giraffe.

BACKGROUND: The circulation of 4-6 m tall giraffes is markedly affected by gravity. To ensure cerebral perfusion, upright giraffes generate a blood pressure in excess of 200 mmHg. Before drinking, the head is lowered by 3-5 m, providing exceptional hemodynamic challenges. Here, we provide quantitative hemodynamic measures during head movement and drinking. METHODS: We measured carotid pressure, jugular pressure, heart rate, and blood flow in awake giraffes, along with circulating blood volume and cerebrospinal fluid pressure in anesthetized giraffes. We also analyzed the contractility and inn

Hemodynamics during noninvasive ventilation in neonates.

Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) is increasingly used in neonatal care to reduce lung injury and improve respiratory outcomes. However, its effects on cardiovascular function and cardiopulmonary interactions, particularly in preterm neonates, remain unclear. This paper reviews the hemodynamic changes associated with NIV and provides an overview of how NIV influences cardiac preload, pulmonary vascular resistance, ventricular output, and systemic blood flow. NIV also affects these parameters in different ways in neonates with compromised cardiovascular stability, such as those with persistent pulm

Bilirubin, renal hemodynamics, and blood pressure.

Bilirubin is generated from the breakdown of heme by heme oxygenase and the reduction of biliverdin by the enzyme biliverdin reductase. Seve … are likely due to its renal actions, the effects of moderate increases in plasma bilirubin on renal hemodynamics as well as bilirubin's potential effects on renal tubule function will be discussed in this review. Mechanisms of action as well as the potential for antihypertensive therapies targeting moderate increases in plasma bilirubin levels will also be hig …

Blood viscosity and hemodynamics during exercise.

We tested the effects of submaximal exercise on blood viscosity (η(b)), nitric oxide production (NO) and hemodynamics. Relationships between the exercise-induced changes that occurred in these parameters were investigated. Nine subjects performed exercise for 15 min at 105% of the first ventilatory threshold. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) and cardiac output (Qc) were measured, allowing the determination of systemic vascular resistance (SVR). Blood was sampled at rest and at the end of exercise. The η(b) was determined at high shear rate and was used to calculate systemic vascular hindrance (VH)…

Acetazolamide improves cerebral hemodynamics in CADASIL.

BACKGROUND: Acetazolamide (ACZ), a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, causes a rapid increase in cerebral blood flow (CBF) in patients with cereb … f a 24-week treatment with 250 mg/d ACZ, which could be chronically implemented to improve cerebral hemodynamics in CADASIL. METHODS: CADASIL patients (n=16) were treated with ACZ (250 mg) daily for 24 weeks. The mean blood flow velocity (MFV) of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) and CO(2)-induced cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) were tested using transcranial …

Natriuretic peptides and hemodynamics in preeclampsia.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between natriuretic peptides (NT-proANP and NT-proBNP) and hemodynamic parameters in preeclampsia. STUDY DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional study of 19 preeclamptic, 15 chronic hypertensive, and 26 normotensive women in the third trimester of pregnancy. Stroke index (SI), heart rate (HR), cardiac index (CI), systemic vascular resistance index (SVRI), and left cardiac work index (LCWI) were derived by whole-body impedance cardiography. Systolic blood pressure (SAP), diastolic blood pressure (DAP), and mean arterial pressure

Sleep apnea syndrome and cerebral hemodynamics.

The dynamics of cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) during sleep were investigated in the right middle cerebral artery of 10 patients with sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) (mean age, 37 years) and 10 healthy control subjects (mean age, 32 years) throughout the entire sleep period. A computer-assisted pulsed (2 MHz) transcranial Doppler ultrasonography system was modified for continuous long-term and on-line recording of cerebral hemodynamics. Concurrently, simultaneous polysomnography, continuous BP recordings, and measurement of the end-expiratory carbon dioxide were undertaken. CBFV showed compara…

Hemodynamics of idiopathic paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

The hemodynamics of induced atrial fibrillation (AF) was investigated in 15 patients (ages 58 +/- 11 years) with paroxysmal AF presenting without organic heart disease or hypertension. A hemodynamic study was performed both during sinus rhythm and after the induction of AF. The mean heart rate increased from 73 +/- 11 to 128 +/- 18 beats/min (P < 0.001) after AF. Systolic and mean aortic pressures did not significantly change, and diastolic aortic pressure increased (78 +/- 11 vs 89 +/- 12 mmHg, P < 0.01). Left ventricular end-diastolic pressure decreased during AF (9 +/- 3 vs 6 +/- 2.6 mmHg, …

The crocodilian heart and central hemodynamics.

The crocodilian heart is completely divided into two atria and two ventricles, resembling the arrangement in birds and mammals. However, in addition to the systemic aorta (right aorta, RAo) which emerges from the left ventricle, there is a second aorta (left aorta, LAo) that leaves the right ventricle beside the common pulmonary artery. The two aortae communicate immediately outside the valves through a small aperture, the foramen of Panizza. During diastole, the blood pressures in the RAo and LAo equalize through the foramen, and the pressure in the LAo therefore remains higher (under most ci
