Autoimmune hepatitis is an uncommon disease causing chronic inflammation of the liver and associated with various circulating autoantibodies. It shares some characteristics with other autoimmune liver diseases, such as primary biliary cirrhosis and sclerosing cholangitis. There has been confusion in past years regarding this entity, but there are now recognized diagnostic criteria by which to make a proper diagnosis. The disease is usually treatable with steroids. Certain proportions of treated patients become cured, although relapse is a problem often requiring chronic administration of stero

Autoimmune hepatitis is one of the causes of chronic progressive liver disease in childhood. Here we report 14 cases with clinical findings, therapeutic management and prognosis, in order to define the course of the disease. Diagnosis of autoimmune hepatitis was done with the presence of at least one of these autoantibodies; antinuclear antibody, smooth muscle antibody, liver-kidney microsomal type 1 antibody, and perinuclear antineutrophilic cytoplasmic antibody. Patients were seen every 3 to 6 months. After doing a complete physical examination, biochemical parameters and autoantibodies dete

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a necro-inflammatory disease that, untreated, carries a 3-year mortality rate of approximately 50%. In this last of a series of three articles, current knowledge regarding AIH is reviewed. The mode of presentation of AIH is variable: insidious onset with few if any symptoms, presenting with symptoms indistinguishable from that of any acute viral hepatitis, or onset with fulminate hepatitis. In AIH, hepatocytes become injured by various agents (such as a viral infection) and become antigenic, leading to a self-perpetuating antigen-antibody response with subsequent

Autoimmune hepatitis is an inflammatory liver disease in which the immune system is believed to orchestrate an immune attack onto the liver cell. Current knowledge suggests that both T helper 1 (TH1) and TH2 programmes are involved in the generation of the liver damage. Release of TH2 cytokines leads to the production of autoantibodies to the hepatocyte membrane that recruit killer cells. TH1 cytokines induce macrophage activation which contributes to hepatocyte destruction. Patients commonly possess the "autoimmune" HLA A1/B8/DR3 haplotype and a silent gene at the C4A locus with consequent pa

Acute and chronic autoimmune hepatitis are uncommon inflammatory liver diseases, mainly occurring in young women, in association with hypergammaglobulinemia and serum autoantibodies. Different types have been described: type 1 characterized by anti-smooth muscle and anti-nuclear antibodies; type 2 characterized by anti-LKM1 antibodies; type 3 characterized by anti-SLA antibodies. Other types, still not clearly defined, may exist. Autoimmune hepatitis are associated with HLA A1 B8 DR3 and HLA DR4. Without any treatment, the disease leads to cirrhosis and, uncommonly, to fulminant hepatitis. Lar

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Despite tacrolimus (TAC) or mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) for alternate approaches, a proportion of patients still required further exploration of other therapeutic options due to uncontrolled autoimmune hepatitis(AIH). The role of cyclophosphamide (CYC) for AIH has been explored in isolated case reports and small series. We present a review of CYC therapy in AIH patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A search for studies with keywords 'autoimmune hepatitis' and 'cyclophosphamide' was performed. Data recorded included gender, age, laboratory parameters and histological fi

Autoimmune liver diseases encompass autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) as lesions of the biliary tract. The term autoimmune cholangitis has not been generally accepted, so it remains an entitiy waiting for precise definition. AIH is a chronic progressive necroinflammatory liver disease mostly occuring in female individuals and leading to ultimate autodestruction of the liver if not treated. Histopathology of the liver reflects the gerneral understanding of the underlying immune especially self reactive CD4 + T-helper cells mediated me

From autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) classification which recognizes three types of AIH, we discuss the main relations between hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and AIH. Type I AIH is associated with antinuclear and antismooth muscle antibodies, and with other autoimmune diseases. There is no relation between type I AIH and HCV. Type I anti-liver kidney microsome and anti-liver cytosol I antibodies represent the hallmark of type II AIH. Among type II AIH, two subgroups emerged: type IIa AIH (10-40%) are true AIH (sensitive to steroids but worsens with interferon alpha), whereas type IIb AIH (60-90%

Liver dysfunction occurs in approximately 50% of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and patients with SLE and elevated liver enzymes can present a complicated and difficult differential diagnosis. Lupus hepatitis and autoimmune hepatitis are 2 immunologic conditions involving the liver, which can have similar clinical, laboratory and systemic presentations, leading to difficulties in diagnosis. Physicians need to be aware of these 2 hepatic diseases as diagnosis and appropriate therapy need to occur early in the disease course to prevent progression to advanced liver disease. We
