Several risk factors, which include heredity, ultra-violet (UV) light and chronic inflammation, contribute to pterygium development. However, there is no report integrating these factors in the pathogenesis of pterygium. OBJECTIVE: A prospective epidemiologic study was performed to compare clinical and evolutive features of acne and response to treatment in 151 patients with acne with (A+) or without (A-) family history of acne.
METHODS: A+ and A- patients were compared on clinical and therapeutic criteria. A+ patients were then distributed into subgroups (M+, F+, M+F+) following the origin of family history (father: F, mother: M).

The published reports on the possibility that the adult type of lactose maldigestion is a hereditary condition are reviewed. The ethnic variability in the frequency of this trait, together with twin and family studies, suggest that this is indeed the case. Family studies, including the one performed in Mexico, indicates that the adult type of lactose maldigestion is inherited in an autosomic recessive manner.

Family, twin and linkage studies in Alzheimer's disease are reviewed. Several of these studies appear to be burdened with sources of error, mainly related to sampling and clinical diagnoses. It was previously thought that early-onset cases of Alzheimer's disease were heavily genetically influenced, whereas late-onset cases were sporadic. The author questions whether this difference is mainly due to methodological error.
