A 20-year-old male with no medical history of interest who goes to the emergency room because of retrosternal pain, odynophagia, dysphagia, and fever. On physical examination: 37.7ºC axillary temperature, bad general condition, and central chest pain on palpation. In the blood test: 16,200x10^6/L white blood cells, 12,800x10^6/L neutrophils, and 11.66mg/dL C reactive protein, with the rest of the complete blood count, coagulation, and biochemistry within normal values.

Histiocytic Sarcoma is a rare malignant hematopoietic neoplasm that can present in extranodal sites including lymph nodes, skin, gastrointestinal tract, and the central nervous system. Only 10% of cases manifest as skin lesions and very few are reported in the head and neck. The authors report a case of histiocytic sarcoma of the eyelid in a 72-year-old male that was clinically diagnosed as a chalazion. Initial excision was not sent for routine histopathological assessment and the patient was subsequently lost to follow up. Recurrence occurred at the eyelid site and additional lesions were fou

Histiocytic sarcoma is a rare malignant neoplasm of the lympho-hematopoietic system that usually occurs in the skin, lymph nodes and intestinal tract. We present a 36-year-old woman with a rare histiocytic sarcoma with isolated central nervous system (CNS) involvement of multifocal circumscribed lesions. Biopsy of the brain lesions showed diffuse proliferation of pleomorphic histiocytes that were immunopositive for CD45, CD68 and CD163. Various cytokeratins and markers of lymphoma, melanoma, germ cell tumours and primary CNS tumours were negative. Examination of bone marrow trephine and a whol…

Erythema multiforme is histologically characterized by liquefactive degeneration along the dermal-epidermal junction, necrotic keratinocytes and a lymphocytic infiltrate. We report a 10-year-old boy with recurrent erythema multiforme major of undetermined etiology with unusual histologic findings. A skin biopsy taken at day 2 of his eruption revealed histologic features otherwise characteristic of erythema multiforme, but mediated instead by a CD68-positive infiltrate, resembling cutaneous Kikuchi's disease. To the best of our knowledge this is the first reported case of 'histiocytic' erythema

UNLABELLED: A HISTOPATHOLOGICAL DIAGNOSIS: Histiocytic cytophagic panniculitis is the specific skin finding in the reactive hemophagocytic syndrome. It is a feverish nodular eruption which accompanies the other clinical and biological features of the reactive hemophagocytic syndrome. Histopathologic changes are diagnostic and consist in a lobular panniculitis characterized by the presence of a histiocytic infiltration of the fat. Histiocytes are benign in appearance and show variable degree of phagocytosis.
INFECTION AND IMMUNE ANOMALIES: In more than 50% of the cases, the disease is triggere…

This report deals with a case of atypical histiocytic granuloma in a male patient of 65 years old. The white ulcerative lesion was located in the upper labial mucosa. No bleeding or pain was observed on palpation. A complete spontaneous healing was observed within two weeks. On histologic examination an excess of atypical cells with multiple mitotic configurations was seen. These cells were histiocytes (this was substantiated by the use of a specific histochemical colour method (KP1-CD 68)). The authors emphasize the difficult clinical differential diagnosis with a traumatic eosinophilic granu…

A 33 year old man developed fever, malaise, jaundice, pancytopenia, coagulation abnormalities, hepatomegaly, pleural effusions and a subcutaneous lump. Biopsies revealed a lobular panniculitis with the presence of cytophagic histiocytes; erythrophagocytosis was also demonstrated in the liver and bone marrow. Despite the use of chemotherapy (CHOP) his clinical condition deteriorated and he died 5 months after presentation. This illness is consistent with the recently described syndrome of histiocytic cytophagic panniculitis.

The classification of histiocytic proliferations in the skin is confusing, largely due to faulty use of terms such as reticulum-cell sarcoma and reticulosis. Immunohistochemical staining procedures and ultrastructural studies have made it possible to differentiate the different cells of the mononuclear phagocyte system. The proliferations discussed here were those of the mononuclear phagocyte system that are associated with characteristic skin manifestations. They include proliferations of monocytes (acute monocytic leukemia), proliferations of tissue macrophages or histiocytes (histiocytic sa…

Histiocytic sarcoma is an uncommon hematological malignancy. Its occurrence in the lung is very rare. Due to the small number of cases and the clinical and pathological features of the disease, the diagnosis can be challenging. Its optimal treatment is not yet known, in locally confined cases - depending on the location and size - surgical removal is part of complex oncotherapy. We report the case of a 52-year-old man with a tumor of central localization in the left lung. Pulmonectomy was performed. Histology verified histiocytic sarcoma of the lung. An overview of clinical features of the ent

Granulomas of the skin may be classified in several ways. They are either infectious or non-infectious in character, and they contain areas of necrobiosis or necrosis, or not. Responsible infectious agents may be mycobacterial, fungal, treponemal, or parasitic organisms, and each case of granulomatous dermatitis should be assessed histochemically for those microbes. In the non-infectious group, examples of necrobiotic or necrotizing granulomas include granuloma annulare; necrobiosis lipoidica; rheumatoid nodule; and lupus miliaris disseminates faciei. Non-necrobiotic/necrotizing and non-infect

The paper describes a case of gastric histiocytic sarcoma in a 70 year-old man, which was diagnosed from immunohistochemical examination of biopsy and surgical specimens. It gives the data available in the literature on the morphological features of this rare cancer and its diagnostic criteria.

Canine histiocytic diseases are an emerging spectrum of diseases characterized by proliferations of histiocytic cells. Nonneoplastic histiocytic disease (reactive histiocytosis, comprising cutaneous and systemic histiocytosis) is uncommon. Neoplastic histiocytic diseases include cutaneous histiocytoma, which is a benign histiocytic tumor, and localized and disseminated histiocytic sarcoma (previously known as malignant histiocytosis), which are malignant diseases. The differentiation of histiocytic diseases can be challenging. This article outlines the characteristics of each disease entity an
