A History of Cholecystectomy.

Benign disease of the gallbladder is common and frequently treated by surgical removal of the gallbladder. Today, cholecystectomy is the most common operation performed by general surgeons, and the majority are done via minimally invasive techniques. However, during the early history of the surgical management of gallbladder disease, cholecystectomy was seldom performed due to perceived risks. We present a historical review of the management of benign gallbladder disease, delineating 4 distinct phases of the surgical approach to the disease. The management of benign gallbladder disease has dra…

The history of cryptosporidiosis.

In this review, the history of cryptosporidiosis caused by parasites of the genus Cryptosporidium is outlined. These apicomplexan parasites evolved together with their vertebrate host during the early Cambrian period. The main etiological agents of human and bovine cryptosporidiosis are the zoonotic species C. parvum and the anthroponotic species C. hominis. Palaeoparasitological data indicate that humans have been parasitised by cryptosporidia since ancient times. Although the first Cryptosporidium species was described in 1907, the protozoan was only recognised as a gastrointestinal parasite…

The history of giardiasis.

This review paper outlines the history of giardiasis caused by Giardia duodenalis. Discovered in 1681, G. duodenalis is probably the first protozoan parasite ever observed by a human. Despite the early discovery, the taxonomic status of the protozoan remained uncertain for a long time. The reason for this is that G. duodenalis is a species complex comprising several phylogenetically distinct genotypes termed assemblages. Initially, it was thought that G. duodenalis is a primitive eukaryote because it lacks many subcellular organelles. However, recent research has shown that the protozoan has d…

The history of entamoebiasis.

This review article summarizes the history of amoebic dysentery (entamoebiasis) caused by Entamoeba histolytica. Initially, Entamoeba species were thought to be the most primitive extant eukaryotes, but more recent research revealed that they emerged relatively late in evolutionary history. Paleoparasitological data suggest that E. histolytica has been a parasite of humans since ancient times and was probably spread throughout the world by man during early human migration. By the end of the 19th century, it was established that E. histolytica was the etiological agent of amoebic dysentery and …

History of migraine.

Migraine symptoms were described in ancient Babylonia, and supernatural forces were felt to play a role in etiology and treatment. This changed in the Greco-Roman period, when the (dis)balance of humors was considered in (patho)physiology and treatment based on this. Aretaeus distinguished between cephalalgia, cephalea, and heterocrania. The latter term was changed to hemicrania by Galen. Physicians in the 17th century attributed headache to the meninges, extracranial periost, and cranial blood vessels. As for the pathophysiology, Willis suggested intracranial vasoconstriction with subsequent

History of the Thyroid.

The history of the thyroid dates from 2697 BCE when the "Yellow Emperor" Hung Ti described the use of seaweed to treat goiter. The English name "thyroid" was coined by Thomas Wharton in 1656 from the Greek word for a shield. Bernard Courtois discovered iodine in 1811 when he noted a residual purplish ash while burning seaweed. Robert Graves is known for his classic 1835 report of "palpitations, goiter, and exophthalmos" in three women, but Caleb Parry observed the same clinical features in 1786. The clinical syndrome we now recognize as hypothyroidism was characterized as "myxoedema" in 1878 b…

History of risedronate.

Herein we review the discovery, development, commercial history and legacy of risedronate or NE-58095, a potent N-containing bisphosphonate developed by scientists at the Cincinnati Miami Valley Laboratories and the Norwich Eaton Laboratories of Procter and Gamble. It is characterized by a hydroxyl substituent (R1) and a pyridyl-methylene substituent (R2) at the carbon bridging two phosphonate moieties. It was shown to have greater potency than alendronate in cell-based systems while binding affinity to bone matrix was lower than alendronate, accounting for the relatively rapid offset of bone …

The term dementia derives from the Latin root demens, which means being out of one's mind. Although the term "dementia" has been used since … again at the phenotypical and molecular levels. We hope a better understanding of this fascinating history will improve scientific research and impose humility towards the complex underpinnings of age-related cognitive decline.

[On the history of barbiturates].

Throughout the history of humanity, numerous therapeutic agents have been employed for their sedative and hypnotic properties such as opium, henbane (Hyoscyamus niger) and deadly nightshade (Atropa belladonna), but also alcohol and wine. In the 19th century potassium bromide was introduced as a sedative - and antiepileptic drug and chloral hydrate as sedative-hypnotics. A new era was reached by the introduction of barbiturates. The story started with the chemist Adolf von Baeyer. His breakthrough in the synthesis of new agents as barbituric acid and indigo and his education of young chemists w…

[On the history of opium].

Most likely, opium was the first narcotic substance discovered at the dawn of humankind. The history of drug addiction is immensely rich and allows for tracing the long way humankind had to travel to reach the contemporary level of consciousness with respect to narcotic substances. A retrospective view of drug addiction that takes into consideration the historical context, while extending our knowledge, also allows for a better understanding of today's problems. The report presents elements of a retrospective view of problems associated with addiction to opium, morphine and heroin over the cen…

The history of benzodiazepines.

After more than 50 years of experience with benzodiazepines, the American health care system has a love-hate relationship with them. In 1955, Hoffmann-La Roche chemist Leo Sternbach serendipitously identified the first benzodiazepine, chlordiazepoxide (Librium). By 1960, Hoffmann-La Roche marketed it as Librium, and it pursued molecular modifications for enhanced activity. Valium (diazepam) followed in 1963. Hoffmann-La Roche's competitors also began looking for analogues. Initially, benzodiazepines appeared to be less toxic and less likely to cause dependence than older drugs. A specific impr

History of eurotransplant.

In 1967, the Dutch immunologist Jon van Rood called Eurotransplant into life. From the beginning it was a non-profit private foundation. Initially it was a loose cooperation, where tissue typing laboratories and transplantation centers joined to achieve a better result for their kidney patients, a longer survival based on better immunological matching from a bigger donor pool. Other centers from the Benelux states, Germany and Austria soon joined the first few cooperating centers. Switzerland was also a member of Eurotransplant, but left the organization in 1978. Based on the pioneering work o

Case histories.

The conditions related to abnormalities of calcium and bone metabolism are large in number and cover problems of hypocalcaemia, hypercalcaemia, primary and secondary osteoporosis, rickets resulting from both vitamin D and phosphate metabolic disorders, and a series of miscellaneous conditions. Included in this chapter is a series of 36 cases drawn from our clinics and from colleagues who have presented these clinical problems at recent Advanced Courses in Paediatric Bone and Calcium Metabolism run by the British Paediatric and Adolescent Bone group. The series of cases is not fully comprehensi

The history of tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis has claimed its victims throughout much of known human history. It reached epidemic proportions in Europe and North America during the 18th and 19th centuries, earning the sobriquet, "Captain Among these Men of Death." Then it began to decline. Understanding of the pathogenesis of tuberculosis began with the work of Théophile Laennec at the beginning of the 19th century and was further advanced by the demonstration of the transmissibility of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection by Jean-Antoine Villemin in 1865 and the identification of the tubercle bacillus as the etiologic agent …

The history of smallpox.

The history of smallpox, from its probable origin 3000 to 6000 years ago to its worldwide eradication in 1978, is a fascinating story. A feared infection, even today, smallpox has caused the deaths of millions of people and disfigured many. This article describes the possible origin of the infection and traces its progress throughout the world. The introduction of inoculation with material from smallpox lesions and vaccination using cowpox virus is described. The World Health Organization's successful smallpox eradication program in the 1960s and 1970s is described. Personal experience of this…
