The distribution of the cases was as follows: Hodgkin's disease 69 (18%); non-Hodgkin's malignant lymphoma 290 (75.7%), unclassifiable 12 (3.2%), hairy cell leukaemia 4 (1%), Lennert's lymphoma 8 cases (2.1%). Some features of the distribution of malignant lymphomas are discussed.

Burden of serious fungal diseases in Hungary.

Valid data on the prevalence of serious fungal diseases are difficult to derive as in most countries these conditions are not reportable infections. To assess the burden of these infections in Hungary prevalence estimates from international peer-reviewed papers and population statistics were utilised. In the intensive care unit (ICU) population at least 370 cases of serious yeast and 52 mould infections can be expected yearly. The total number of candidaemia cases may be as high as 1110 annually. In patients with acute leukaemia and recipients of haematopoietic stem cell and solid organ transp…

Clinical and genetic characteristics of craniosynostosis in Hungary.

Craniosynostosis, the premature closure of cranial sutures, is a common craniofacial disorder with heterogeneous etiology and appearance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical and molecular characteristics of craniosynostoses in Hungary, including the classification of patients and the genetic analysis of the syndromic forms. Between 2006 and 2012, 200 patients with craniosynostosis were studied. Classification was based on the suture(s) involved and the associated clinical features. In syndromic cases, genetic analyses, including mutational screening of the hotspot regions…

Clinical microbiology of neonatal candidiasis in Hungary.

The occurrence of Candida spp. was investigated during a three-year period in two neonatal intensive care units, Budapest, Hungary. The species distribution among the 41 analysed cases was the following: C. albicans (30/41, 73%), C. parapsilosis (10/41, 24%) and C. glabrata (1/41, 3%). All of the isolates were susceptible to the tested drugs. There was a significant difference in the birth weight, the gestational age <30 weeks and the occurrence of caesarean section between the C. albicans and the C. parapsilosis groups of the cases. Respiratory tract colonization was the same (76-77%) in the …

Recently recognized cases of ophthalmofilariasis in Hungary.

PURPOSE: To report four cases of zoonotic ophthalmodirofilariasis infection caused by Dirofilaria repens in Hungary. METHODS: Four cases of ophthalmofilariasis have been treated at our department during the last 14 months. A subconjunctival moving worm was observed by slit lamp biomicroscopy in two cases. In one of these a living filaria was surgically removed, but the other disappeared. Red eye and migrating edema were the presenting signs in two cases. A biopsy taken from the subcutaneous masses disclosed D repens. RESULTS: Histopathologic or parasitologic examination identified a female D…

Cigarette smoking and psychiatric disorders in Hungary.

Data from the United States and from several European countries show that patients with major mood disorders, schizophrenia and social phobia smoke at significantly higher rates than the general population. However, there are no published results on this field from Central Europe, including Hungary. In the present study, the rate of current and lifetime smoking of the consecutively screened outpatients with DSM-IV unipolar major depression (n=92), bipolar disorder (n=60), schizophrenia (n=80), schizoaffective disorder (n=42) and panic disorder without major depression (n=60) were assessed and …

Genetical and epidemiological studies of polydactyly in Hungary.

Polydactyly is one of the most frequently observed human congenital limb malformations. Sporadic cases of polydactyly have been described, but most show an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency of polydactyly among children born between 1980 and 1997 in Hungary. The predominance of the postaxial type over the preaxial one was less than expected. These malformations affected significantly more boys than girls. The proportion of children with low birth weight affected by polydactyly was higher than expected. Among mothers giving lif…

[Incidence of thyroid disorders in children in Hungary].

Author gives information to the home tendencies of incidence of some important thyroid disorders in childhood mainly on the basis of his studies done with his coworkers. Results are compared with the standpoints raised since Chernobyl accident. It is verified on the basis of cca one million neonatal TSH screening that the frequency of congenital hypothyroidism in Hungary corresponds to those of European countries in the last 17 years. Changes connected with Chernobyl has not occurred. It deals with incidence of Graves' disease as the main form of hyperthyroidism relying upon TSH receptor antib…

Coccidioidomycosis in Hungary. The first import case.

A case of an isolated subcutaneous coccidioidomycosis in a 61-year-old man is presented. The patient has lived and worked in Arizona for 3 years previously but developed no apparent clinical signs of the disease. The painless, cavitating, tumor-like mass was surgically excised and the diagnosis was established by histological demonstration of the fungi and confirmed by serum counterimmunoelectrophoresis. This represents the first imported case of coccidioidomycosis in Hungary.

Prevention of congenital toxoplasmosis in Szeged, Hungary.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii infection of the fetus can only be discovered or prevented by the appropriate serological screening and subsequent treatment of the mother and her offspring. In Hungary, there is no obligatory toxoplasma screening for pregnant women and both the reporting and follow-up of congenital toxoplasmosis cases is limited. In 1987 we started a systematic study in the Szeged region of Hungary, in which all pregnant women were screened and appropriate treatment given to all mothers and their offspring where congenital toxoplasmosis was suspected. METHODS: All pregnant women…

Prevalence of Chlamydia pneumoniae antibodies in Hungary.

Investigation of Chlamydia pneumoniae (TWAR) antibodies in paired sera of 120 patients with various respiratory diseases revealed a prevalence of 4.2% of IgG seroconversion. IgG antibody without seroconversion was found in 83.3%. Sera of ten patients showed titers as high as 512-1024 or above. Children with no respiratory disease and blood donors in Budapest had specific IgG in 46.5% and 75.2% respectively. Prevalence of IgG antibody in children from the rural areas of Hungary was about 50% lower than in children in the capital. The high prevalence of persistent IgG, indicating earlier infecti…

Epidemiology and significance of Q fever in Hungary.

In Hungary, Coxiella (C.) burnetii infections were diagnosed for the first time in 1956 in a few dairy and sheep farms. Q fever associated with abortion was first demonstrated in 1983 during laboratory diagnostic examination of fetuses and placentae. From case history data and on-the-spot investigations it is clear that in cattle stocks abortion caused by C. burnetii occurs sporadically, whereas in sheep flocks numerous abortions may take place within a short time. Losses caused by Q fever on the affected large-scale farms amount to 5-15%, which arise partly from reduced calf or lamb crop and …
