Hydrochloric acid infusion for treatment of metabolic alkalosis associated with respiratory acidosis.

Hypercapnia due to respiratory failure can be more severe when accompanied by coexistent metabolic alkalosis. We therefore tested the hypothesis that hydrochloric acid (HCl) infusion could improve PaCO2 in 15 critically ill patients admitted with mixed respiratory acidosis and metabolic alkalosis, and a pH of between 7.35 and 7.45. HCl was infused at a constant rate of 25 mmol/h until the bicarbonate concentration decreased less than 26 mmol/L, or until the pH decreased less than 7.35 (initial pH greater than 7.40) or 7.30 (initial pH less than 7.40). Administration of 170 +/- 53 mmol of HCl d…

[Gastroduodenal complications after the ingestion of hydrochloric acid. One case (author's transl)].

The ingestion of a caustic acid resulted in retractile fibrosis of 2/3 of the stomach with a secondary duodenal fistula. The antro-pyloro-duodenal circuit was re-established at around the 3rd after ingestion. However, the duodenal fistula caused the formation of encysted pelvic abscesses which were difficult to drain and satisfactorily treat. The clinical course stretched over a period of 4 years.

[Secretion of free hydrochloric acid after organ-saving surgery for duodenal ulcer].

Secretory function of the operated stomach was studied in 188 patients after trunk and selective vagotomy with distal resection and pyloroplasty of various extent. Under conditions of vagotomy the preservation of the whole stomach essentially fails to increase residual secretion of free hydrochloric acid.

Multiple stents for tracheobronchomalacia caused by hydrochloric acid inhalation: a case report.

Tracheobronchomalacia (TBM) is a rare disease characterized by excessive collapsibility of the central airways during expiration. Potential consequences and treatment courses of the aspiration of erosive agents are seldom reported. To our knowledge, this is the first report of TBM caused by hydrochloric acid inhalation, which was successfully treated by multiple airway stents insertion. A 45-year-old female presented with dyspnea and pharynx discomfort after falling into a hydrochloric acid pool. The patient was successfully treated with multiple stents insertion. In 15 months after the stents…

[Prophylactic effect of ambroxol on acute hydrochloric acid aspiration - induced lung injury].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the protective effect of ambroxol, a muco-active drug, on acute hydrochloric acid-induced lung injury in rats. METHODS: Thirty pathogen-free SD rats were randomly divided into three groups: group A (n=10) and group B (n=10) were injected normal saline (NS) intraperitoneally (6.7 ml/kg), and group C with ambroxol (50 mg/kg), once a day for 3 consecutive days. Then animals received in tracheal instillation of NS (group A, pH 5.3, 1.2 ml/kg) or hydrochloric acid/NS (group B and C, pH 1.25, 1.2 ml/kg). Five hours after instillation of the injury vehicle, the arterial gas wa…

The use of dilute hydrochloric acid and cimetidine to reverse severe metabolic alkalosis.

Two cases of severe metabolic alkalosis associated with gastric hypersecretion were successfully treated with dilute hydrochloric acid and a histamine H2-receptor antagonist given by intravenous infusion. This combined therapy with electrolyte replacement and suppression of gastric secretion is valuable in the control of this serious metabolic abnormality when conventional treatment is unsuccessful or contraindicated.

Persistent asthma after inhalation of a mixture of sodium hypochlorite and hydrochloric acid.

Chlorine gas inhalation can lead to temporary mucous membrane irritation, pulmonary edema, and transient bronchospasm. Existence of respiratory sequelae is debated. We report a case of asthma, persisting 2 years after the inhalation of a mixture of sodium hypochlorite and hydrochloric acid. Bronchial histologic findings and transmission electron microscopy examinations showed uncommon abnormalities supporting irritation for cause of this nonimmunologic asthma.

Comparison of systemic and local effects of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid: an experimental study in a rat model.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to determine the local and systemic effects of widely available household cleaners, namely 45% nitric acid (NHO(3)), and 18% hydrochloric acid (HCl), in a rat model. METHODS: This prospective, experimental, placebo-controlled trial was carried out in the Animal Research Laboratory of Akdeniz University hospital. Commonly available solution of 45% NHO(3) and 18% HCl were tested against normal saline. Each solution was administrated orally to groups consisting of ten rats. The metabolic changes were determined by measuring the pH and calcium (Ca) levels before and after the…

Spectrophotometric reaction rate method for determination of barbituric acid by inhibition of the hydrochloric acid-bromate reaction.

A new kinetic-spectrophotometric method was developed for the determination of barbituric acid. The method is based on its inhibition effect on the reaction between hydrochloric acid and bromate. The decolorization of methyl orange by the reaction products was used to monitor the reaction spectrophotometrically at 510 nm. The variable affecting the rate of the reaction was investigated. The method is simple, rapid, relatively sensitive and precise. The limit of detection is 7.9x10(-7) M and calibration rang is 1x10(-6)-6.0x10(-4) M barbituric acid. The linearity range of the calibration graph …

Fatal Zargar grade 3b corrosive injury after hydrochloric acid ingestion: A case report.

RATIONALE: Caustic substance ingestion is an emergency and life-threatening condition as it leads to tissue damage, acidosis, and multiorgan failure. This study presents a case report of hydrochloric acid ingestion and notably dark-red urine output due to acute tubular necrosis. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 59-year-old male presented with attempted suicide by ingesting 500 mL of hydrochloric acid (37%), and complained of severe abdominal pain and shortness of breath. Upon arrival, his vital signs showed a temperature of 34.3°C, blood pressure of 104/77 mm Hg, a pulse rate of 135 beats per minute, and …

Croton lechleri Extracts as Green Corrosion Inhibitors of Admiralty Brass in Hydrochloric Acid.

Croton lechleri, commonly known as Dragon's blood, is a tree cultivated in the northwest Amazon rainforest of Ecuador and Peru. This tree produces a deep red latex which is composed of different natural products such as phenolic compounds, alkaloids, and others. The chemical structures of these natural products found in C. lechleri latex are promising corrosion inhibitors of admiralty brass (AB), due to the number of heteroatoms and π structures. In this work, three different extracts of C. lechleri latex were obtained, characterized phytochemically, and employed as novel green corrosion inhib

A Concentrated Hydrochloric Acid-based Method for Complete Recovery of DNA from Bone.

The successful extraction of DNA from historical or ancient animal bone is important for the analysis of discriminating genetic markers. Methods used currently rely on the digestion of bone with EDTA and proteinase K, followed by purification with phenol/chloroform and silica bed binding. We have developed a simple concentrated hydrochloric acid-based method that precludes the use of phenol/chloroform purification and can lead to a several-fold increase in DNA yield when compared to other commonly used methods. Concentrated hydrochloric acid was shown to dissolve most of the undigested bone an…
