The analysis of Hymenoptera hypersensitive patients in Ankara, Turkey.

BACKGROUND: Although there are some published data about the prevalence of honeybee and vespid venom allergy from Turkey, there has been no report about Hymenoptera venom immunotherapy practice. Our aim was to determine the characteristics of Hymenoptera venom hypersensitivity and venom immunotherapy practice in Ankara, Turkey. METHODS: Demographic and clinical data, intradermal test, and serum specific IgE results of 65 Hymenoptera venom allergic patients who were followed up in our department from February 2005 to August 2009 were analysed. RESULTS: Serum Vespula specific IgE class (p:0.02…

A case of anaphylaxis: horse-fly or hymenoptera sting?

In literature it has been described a high risk of systemic reaction after blood-sucking Dyptera bites, like mosquitoes and horsefly, in people sensitive to hymenoptera. A 51 year old man, allergic to hymenoptera venom and with a history of i.v. reaction after Mueller, who has been treated with Vespula sp. ITS for the last 3 years, was stung by a yellow, black and green insect on the neck. Five minutes after the bite, he suffered generalized hitching and urticaria, oral cavity and lower limbs paresthesia, followed by lost of consciousness. At the Emergency Room he was successfully treated with…

Rush hymenoptera venom immunotherapy is efficacious and safe.

BACKGROUND: Although rapid venom immunotherapy (VIT) protocols have been shown to be safe and effective, this issue has not yet been clarified in Turkey. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the side effects of rush VIT as well as early clinical and immunological responses in patients with a venom allergy. METHODS: Eighteen patients who had a history of severe systemic reactions after Hymenoptera sting were included in the study. The diagnosis was made on the basis of positive skin test reactivity and the presence of specific IgE in serum to either bee or vespid venoms. Fourteen …

Natural history of Hymenoptera venom sensitivity in adults.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic studies of Hymenoptera venom allergy in adults show a prevalence of positive venom skin test results, RASTs of 15% to 25%, or both, but most such individuals have had no systemic reactions to stings. The clinical significance and natural history of this apparently common sensitivity is uncertain. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the natural history of venom sensitization by observing the rate of decrease or increase in sensitivity in normal adults over 5 to 10 years. The clinical significance of these findings is related to the frequency of systemic reactions to sti…

Comparison of diagnostic tests for hymenoptera sting allergy.

The authors examined correlations among individual Hymenoptera venom skin tests, venom radioallergosorbent tests (RAST), venom-induced leukocyte histamine release (LHR) assays and individual Hymenoptera whole body extract (WBE) skin tests in 37 patients with histories of systemic reactions to Hymenoptera stings. Significant positive correlations were seen between the venom skin test results and results from either the venom RAST or the LHR assay for most venoms. There was a relatively high frequency of positive WBE skin tests in association with other negative tests. The ultimate diagnostic te…

The use of the radioallergosorbent test in the diagnosis of Hymenoptera anaphylaxis.

IgE antibody levels to Hymenoptera (honey bee, hornet, wasp or yellow jacket) venom or venom sac were measured in the serum of ninety-six patients with a history of immediate hypersensitivity reactions to these insect stings. Normal levels of IgE antibody were found in fourty-four of these patients tested. The severity of the systemic reaction was similar in those patients with normal and elevated IgE antibody levels, and the interval from the systemic reaction to antibody determination was also similar. In twelve patients with a definite reaction to honey bee venom, the IgE antibody was eleva…

Hymenoptera venom-induced anaphylaxis and hereditary alpha-tryptasemia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To discuss the association between the common dominantly inherited genetic trait hereditary alpha-tryptasemia (HαT) and hymenoptera venom-induced anaphylaxis (HVA). RECENT FINDINGS: Elevated BST has been correlated with more severe systemic anaphylaxis in humans in a number of settings - most notably in HVA. Clonal mast cell disease, in particular, systemic mastocytosis, is frequently associated with elevated BST, and is a major risk factor for severe HVA. However, clonal mast cell diseases are believed to be rare, whereas HVA is relatively more common. HαT affects an estim…

Effect of Wheat Cultivars and Blends on the Oviposition and Larval Mortality of Cephus cinctus (Hymenoptera: Cephidae) and Parasitism by Bracon cephi (Hymenoptera: Braconidae).

The wheat stem sawfly (Cephus cinctus Norton) is a major historical pest of wheat in the northern Great Plains of North America. The insect spends most of its life as a larva protected inside grass stems so that its management has relied on strategies other than insecticides. We conducted a study in southern Alberta from 2006-2009 to assess the effects of wheat species, cultivar, seeding rate, and blending a resistant and a vulnerable cultivar, on oviposition, larval infestation, and cutting damage. The mortality caused by its primary parasitoid, Bracon cephi (Gahan), was also assessed to inve

Defensive chemicals of tawny crazy ants, Nylanderia fulva (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and their toxicity to red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

Nylanderia fulva (Mayr) has been reported as being able to displace Solenopsis invicta Buren, one of the most aggressive invasive ants in the world. Like S. invicta, N. fulva use chemical secretions in their defense/offense, which may contribute to their observed superior competition ability. In this study, the defensive chemicals of N. fulva workers and their toxicity against S. invicta workers were investigated. Like other formicine ants, N. fulva workers produce formic acid in their poison glands and 2-ketones and alkanes in Dufour glands. Of these, undecane and 2-tridecanone are two princi

Morphology and chemistry of Dufour glands in four ectoparasitoids: Cephalonomia tarsalis, C. waterstoni (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae), Anisopteromalus calandrae, and Pteromalus cerealellae (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae).

The venom apparatus of four hymenopterous parasitoids, including two bethylids, C. tarsalis (Ashmead) and C. waterstoni (Gahan), and two pteromalids, A. calandrae (Howard) and P. cerealellae (Ashmead), were removed and the associated Dufour glands characterized with respect to their external morphology and chemistry. Dufour glands in all four species have a characteristic translucent appearance that apparently results from their lipid content. The stalked Dufour glands of C. tarsalis and C. waterstoni are pear-shaped and have overall lengths of approximately 0.2 and 0.15 mm, respectively. The

Cytotoxic Activities of Some Cynipid (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) Gall Extracts.

Natural products derived from plants are valuable sources of bioactive compounds with potential anticancer properties. This study primarily investigated the cytotoxic activities of gall extracts of Andricus caputmedusae (ACA), Andricus curtisii (ACU), and Andricus quercustozae (AQU) in human cancer cell lines (LNCaP, Caco-2, HeLa) and a non-cancerous cell line (HEK293). The phenolic compositions of the extracts were analyzed by LC-MS/MS to help interpret their biological effects. The extracts contained notable levels of shikimic acid, gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, and catechin, with AQU ex

Hymenoptera venom skin testing: Adopting an accelerated test protocol.

BACKGROUND: The standard method of Hymenoptera venom intradermal skin test is performed at a starting concentration of 0.001 to 0.01 μg/mL and increased by 10-fold concentrations until positive or a maximum concentration of 1 μg/mL. Accelerated methods that start at higher concentrations have been reported as safe; however, many institutions have not adopted this approach. OBJECTIVE: To compare the outcome and safety of standard and accelerated venom skin test protocols. METHODS: This was a retrospective chart review of patients with suspected venom allergy who underwent skin testing at 4 al…

Hymenoptera Anaphylaxis and C-kit Mutations: An Unexpected Association.

Clinical manifestations of mastocytosis in adults comprise signs and symptoms linked to mast cell (MC) activation, including anaphylaxis. Depending on MC burden, adults can be diagnosed with systemic mastocytosis, when the WHO criteria are fulfilled, or with other clonal MC disorders, characterized by MC mediator symptoms and demonstration of activating KIT mutations and/or expression of CD25 on MCs. There is a specific link between mastocytosis and hymenoptera venom allergy (HVA): the reported frequency of HVA in mastocytosis is 20-50 % and raises to 60-80 % in patients affected by indolent s…

Effect of GF-120 (Spinosad) Aerial Sprays on Colonies of the Stingless Bee Scaptotrigona mexicana (Hymenoptera: Apidae) and the Honey Bee (Hymenoptera: Apidae).

Despite their relevant contribution to the conservation of tropical ecosystems and crop productivity through pollination, the stingless bees (Apidae: Meliponini) can be considered a group of neglected species in the assessment of pesticides upon nontarget organisms. In this article, we evaluated the effect of aerial sprays of the spinosad-based fruit fly toxic bait GF-120 upon colonies of the stingless bee Scaptotrigona mexicana Guérin (Hymenoptera: Apidae), an economically important and abundant species in some landscapes of Mexico, located in mango orchards. Colonies of the honey bee Apis me…

Hymenoptera allergy, difficulties in differential diagnosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of hymenoptera venom allergy can be particularly challenging, with the clinical history serving as a fundamental tool to guide the identification of the culprit insect. However, patient-reported visual recognition is often inaccurate and may lead to diagnostic errors unless supported by specific immunoallergological testing. CASE REPORT: A 37-year-old man who, during a stay in Taramundi (Asturias, Spain), sustained an insect sting that he visually identified as Nomada flava. Ten minutes later, he developed Müller grade III anaphylaxis, with loss of consciousness, ang…

Heightened sensitivity in high-grooming honey bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae).

Honey bees use grooming to defend against the devastating parasite Varroa destructor Anderson and Trueman. We observed the grooming responses of individual bees from colonies previously chosen for high- and low-grooming behavior using a combination of mite mortality and mite damage. Our aim was to gain insight into specific aspects of grooming behavior to compare if high-grooming bees could discriminate between a standardized stimulus (chalk dust) and a stimulus of live Varroa mites and if bees from high-grooming colonies had greater sensitivity across different body regions than bees from low
