We report a case of acne neonatorum developed in a boy since birth. His mother and his aunt had different signs of hyperandrogenism including acne and hirsutism. This case illustrates the correlation between acne neonatorum and familial hyperandrogenism. It shows the importance of the family history and the eventual clinical and serological presence of hyperandrogenism in the mother when confronted with acne neonatorum.

Excessive androgen levels in women after menopause often result from an imbalance in ovarian steroid secretion: a rapid decline in estrogen secretion associated with a slow decrease in androgen secretion, compounded by a physiological decrease in sex hormone-binding globulin. Hyperandrogenism is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular events and gynecological neoplasms, also impacting the emotional well-being of affected women. Therefore, the aim of these guidelines is to guide the clinical physician in the appropriate clinical and biochemical evaluation of hyperandrogenism after menop…

BACKGROUND: Postmenopausal androgen excess often occurs due to the imbalance between the rapid decline in ovarian estrogen and a relatively … tic for multiple ovarian Leydig cell tumors.
CONCLUSION: The most frequent cause of postmenopausal hyperandrogenism is polycystic ovary syndrome. It is necessary to exclude the presence of neoplastic causes (ovarian or adrenal androgen- secreting tumors). In case of marked virilization and severe hyperandrogenism, it is useful to perform transvaginal ultrasonogra …

Emerging evidence indicates that testosterone, which can increase muscle mass and strength, stimulates erythropoiesis, promotes competitive … muscle mass will develop like that of a man. These findings have led to the proposal that essential hyperandrogenism is beneficial for athletic performance and plays a role in the choice by women to compete in athletic activities. Moreover, a recent randomized controlled trial demonstrated a significant increase in the lean mass and aerobic performance by young ex …

Hyperandrogenism or hyperandrogenemia are medical conditions characterized by excessive levels of androgens in the periphery or systemically. Clinical manifestations of hyperandrogenism include hirsutism, seborrhea, acne, androgenetic alopecia, and virilization. Hirsutism, defined as excessive growth of terminal hair in women in a male-like pattern, is the most commonly used clinical diagnostic criterion of hyperandrogenism and is determined by using a standardized scoring system of hair growth. Acne and alopecia are further common androgenic skin changes and might be observed without hirsutis…

Biochemical derangements in ovarian, adrenal, and peripheral androgen production and metabolism play an important role in underlying causes of hyperandrogenism. Specific diagnostic serum markers such as testosterone (total) and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), respectively, may be helpful in the diagnosis of ovarian and adrenal hyperandrogenism, respectively. Validated immunoassays or mass spectrometry assays should be used to quantify testosterone, DHEAS and other principal androgens. Free testosterone measurements, determined by equilibrium dialysis or the calculated method, are advoc…

Hyperandrogenism in women encompasses a spectrum of clinical manifestations including hirsutism, acne, androgenetic alopecia, menstrual dysfunction, and virilization. Although polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome accounts for the majority of cases, a systematic endocrine evaluation is essential to identify less common but clinically significant etiologies including androgen-secreting tumors, ovarian hyperthecosis, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and cortisol excess. Total testosterone liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry measurement in women has refined thresholds for further eva…

Ovarian hyperthecosis or ovarian stromal hyperplasia is a non-neoplastic functional disorder resulting from the presence of luteinized thecal cells within a hyperplastic ovarian stroma. The condition is more common in postmenopausal women than in those of reproductive age and leads to substantial clinical and laboratory alterations, principally androgenetic alopecia, progressive hirsutism, and elevated testosterone levels. Investigation should include clinical evaluation, laboratory tests, and imaging tests to differentiate between the principal diagnostic hypotheses. The gold standard for dia

We present an unusual case of mucinous cystadenoma presenting with severe virilisation in a postmenopausal woman. A 71-year-old woman was re … Postoperative testosterone levels quickly normalised (<0.4 µg/L).Rapidly developing postmenopausal hyperandrogenism easily turns into a diagnostic challenge for the clinician. Hormone-secreting neoplasms of the ovary are most commonly of sex cord stromal derivation, but atypical causes must be recognised as well. Cystadenomas are among the most common benign ovar …

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of adrenal hyperandrogenism (AH), as defined by increased circulating dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEAS) levels, ranges from 15 to 45% in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
METHODS: The aim of this review is to update the pathogenesis and consequences of AH in PCOS, from molecular genetics to the clinical setting.
RESULTS: Mounting evidence derived from animal models suggests that genetically or enviromentally determined prenatal androgen excess, by influencing the hormonal and metabolic phenotype of susceptible female fetuses later in life, may be th…

Introduction. Female hyperandrogenism is a frequent motive of consultation. It is revealed by hirsutism, acne or seborrhea, and disorders in menstruation cycle combined or not with virilisation signs. Several etiologies are incriminated but the hyperandrogenism-insulin resistance-acanthosis nigricans syndrome is rare. Observation. A 20-year-old girl, having had a five-year-old secondary amenorrhea. The exam revealed a patient, normotensive with a body mass index at 30 kg/m(2) and a waist measurement of 120 cm, a severe hirsutism assessed to be 29 according to Ferriman Gallwey scale, virilisati…

The objective of this work was to study the ovarian function when follicular development is induced during a hyperandrogenic condition. Female rats were injected with either equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG group) to induce folliculogenesis or eCG together with DHEA to induce folliculogenesis in a hyperandrogenic condition (eCG+HA group). The control group was injected with vehicle. Ovarian mRNA levels of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) co-activator PGC1α, the PPARγ co-repressor NCoR, the main enzymes involved in the ovarian steroidogenesis (CYP17, 3β-hydroxyster
