Alimentary tract duplication is a rare congenital anomaly which may involve any part of the alimentary tract extending from stomach to rectum. Clinical presentation may mimic an inflamed appendix as described in this case. A 9-year-old boy with a clinical diagnosis of perforated appendix was noted to have a normal appendix intra-operatively. Congenital vitelline duct anomalies other than Meckel's diverticulum are rare in animals. A cyst of approximately 8 mm in diameter was observed on the antimesenteric surface of the ileal serosa in a 10-week-old female Crl:CD(SD) rat. Microscopically, the cyst closely resembled the ileum, but it did not communicate with the ileal lumen. A laparotomy was performed on a 67-year-old woman with a provisional diagnosis of intestinal obstruction from a primary small bowel carcinoma. A pathological examination showed a mucinous adenocarcinoma of the ileum, with no regional lymph node metastases. There was no evidence of any other abnormality in the peritoneal cavity. Terminal ileum diverticulitis is a very rare disease that may lead to an acute abdomen mimicking appendicitis. Because of its rarity, an optimal treatment for this disease has not been established yet. In this study, we evaluated the clinical features and outcomes of nonoperative management of terminal ileum diverticulitis, including suspected perforation. Insufficiency fractures are fractures in bones with nontumorous disease (e.g., osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis or following radiation) at normal load. Two cases of insufficiency fracture of the ilium and sacrum are presented. Predisposing factors, clinical picture, imaging procedure and therapy are outlined.

A new case of ileal inflammatory fibroid polyp (IFP) is reported. A 76 years old woman presented with abdominal pain due to intestinal obstruction; an ileo-ileal intussusception caused by an ulcerated submucosal polyp was found at laparotomy. The IFP usually appears as a solitary benign lesion, rarely located in the ileum. It is made up of fibrous tissue with a dense infiltrate composed predominantly of eosinophils.

A congenital diverticulum of the ileum (Meckel's diverticulum), approximately 10 mm long, was detected in a rat and examined histologically. The histological findings were basically the same as in the ileum. Although Meckel's diverticulum is uncommon in the rat, the present report demonstrated the possibility of discovering new cases.

An 81-year-old woman, who, at the age of 5 1/2 years, had undergone a series of operations for gangrene of the ileum, presented in 1983 with acquired megacolon and chronic malabsorption caused by the persistence of a jejunosigmoid fistula for 76 years. Follow-up in this case thus spans 76 years.

Acquired diverticula of the small bowel are extremely rare. These diverticula occur in less than one per cent of the population. Acquired diverticula of the ileum make up approximately ten per cent to 20 per cent of this number. Associated complications are noted in less than ten per cent of patients, but mortality rates related to these complications have been reported to range from 25 per cent to 50 per cent.
